Tinting...opinions needed

i really like the llumar stuff cause during the day, it looks really dark (relatively) but when the sun starts to go down, your car looks less and less tinted. if you come up to it, you still won't be able to see in, but just by looking at it, it's hard to tell if you're tinted or not, like the bottom pic as compared to the top. it's trippy stuff. and the tint actually takes on a bit of whatever color your car is. my friend's jag is that sea green or blue or whatever, and her tint looks like her car's color. i got mine on my dark blue and the tint has a hint of blue in it. it's truly trippy.

YWM - I'm going to call the distributor in PA this morning and find out who in the Buffalo area does Llumar. I checked out their website http://www.llumar.com and it looks like high quality stuff.

I'll let you know what I find out.

lumar and solarguard are the 2 best films you can get as far as long life and ease of application.

Actually 3M Scotchtint is the best you can get, but it's very hard to become a 3M certified installer so not many places have it.

Anybody from Atl, GA know where to get a good job done cheap for tinting an MP5?

But yeah I'm gonna go 30% on mine and that's illegal in GA (33% max).

I'll ask my friend where he got his. He lives in Roswell & he has 11%. I don't know how he gets away with it, but it looks awesome. Here is his car:

MCstark - that black mp5 will look nice with a dark tint (just my .02)
~nK~

It will probably look a lot darker than the legal limit tint I'm going to get. Because of the car color and the black leather interior! :D

I'll take some pics once it's done...hopefully in a week or so.

How easy or hard would it be to strip and replace the one on the rear window with the defroster lines?

It is actually pretty easy... it's just time consuming. What they do, is take an exacto knife ONLY to pull off a little bit from the top (so you can grab the film with your fingers), and then you just peel off the rest by hand. Like when you peel off an old sticker.

Then you take one of those scrubbing sponges (like the white 3M Scotch-Brite sponges... the green ones are too rough), with a little soap, and rub the adhesive off. That way you don't damage the defroster lines or scratch the glass. You must not scrub too hard though... just scrub normally BETWEEN the lines, and very softly ON the lines.

I know, because I had it done on my car three days ago, and I used the defroster last night, and it works perfectly. The guy who removed the old tint film told me how to do remove it (he showed me how) without damaging the tint.

The reason I'm asking is that the shop that did it gave me a lifetime warranty on the tint... and if I look closely and be very picky I can see some bubles and and a little dirt trapped under the tint... and I am debating if I should spend my time getting them to replace it or just let it go...

If the bubbles are on the edges, it might start comming off (they might get longer, and look like streaks... which is what happened to me). But if they are just little itty bitty bubbles here and there, I would probably just make sure I keep the receipt in a safe place.

NY legal is 35% max (darkest legally) unless you have livery (limo) than darker is permitted.

ps: Glhboy is a nut, wish i could get away with tint that dark.

Thanks elias...where in Westchester are you? I did my four years at Pace in White Plains. I can't imagine taking my P5 on the Sawmill...now that's FUN!!!!

I have my business around the block from PACE on Westmoreland, I sometimes in the summer have my lunch across the street from Pace in the building park to check the ladies during lunch....

Do you get herassed about the tint often?

elias - I haven't gotten it tinted yet, but with a black car I know I'm asking to get pulled over. Cops would be surprised when there's a 31 year old inside, but they'd prob still write a ticket. And I'm not crazy about really dark tint anyway...but I'll have to see how dark 35% is.

I think the Llumar has a metallic finish, so that should look pretty good. I'm gonna hafta call them back because their distributor in PA took my info down but I haven't received a call back yet. Some people just don't know how to do business.....
