Thinking about the dark side

Well it looks as though my friends pain could be a gain for me.

I'll give you the storey on my friend first

About 6-7 months ago he bought a 95 eclipse GSX. He's had quite a few problems with it and last month a ton of problems with it. He has engine knock and things over all are just not looking good with it. He bought a motor from someone online at DSM forum and the supposed j-spec 30k motor turned out to be crap. Not to mention he bought a head off of another person and the head turned out to be bad shape too. So his engine swap isn't happening at the moment and the "new" engine also came with a turbo. So my friends now got quite a few parts sitting around doing nothing and it looks like I might be able to take one of the t-25 turbos off of his hands.

My question is since I'm pretty unexperienced with turbos is what am I looking at needing to get a bare bones turbo kit into my car. I know of a few parts but would like recommendations as to how I might be able to get this off the ground. I'm sure the shop my friends got his car at would help out and their prices seem decent as far as work goes.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

if you're not really experienced ... i would say piecing a turbo kit together with the right quality parts will be a challenge. it may either cost you as much as a good kit out there, like the MAM kit, which all the R&D has been done. i guess you could piece it together to have a unique looking kit and your own parts, but that may be more expensive. i guess it depends if you have hook ups as well.

I'm not completely unknowledgable but I'm definitely a noob. One of the things I was thinking of was talking to the guys at the performance shop about their thoughts on it. I have a good basic understanding on what is needed and how it works but no experience on it. Was just kind of thinking what the possibilities I have might be since I can probably get the turbo for free off the friend to start me off.

I dont know this answer but ask around and see if a msp turbo manifold and down pipe would work with this turbo. Then you find someone to buy it off of and get some management and the other goodies and your set. It would just take money and the time to look at it right and do it right.

yeah I was thinking about going the routue of trying to find some MSP parts to peice this together. One thing I was thinking of was maybe getting parts from the turbo setup from http://www.essentialspeed.com and trying to get a setup similar to their non-intercooled kit. I however do see the point of maybe trying to save the head ache and just save up for a kit. Wish I had the money to just do it all at once, would love to pick up Protege2k's kit but don't have the money right now. Basically I was just trying to think of a setup that would put me close to a protege speed setup or somewhere around there. I wouldn't be looking for crazy power just a nice little extra 50hp or so.

as an MP3 owner I'm starting to get tired of random people asking me if the car has a turbo. I would love to be able to say yes to it some day

all the guys I know put more power down when they turbo their ES or MP3s than we do with the MSPs, but it was nice to buy it already factory packaged. Turboing is a lot of work, money and brain cells, I just opted for the shortest route and as long as I don't get too stupid it will last for me.

i'm doing the mazdaspeed swap on my ES right now. expect it to be an extensive, in-depth process, no matter what you do. you'd need a lot of parts to complete the msp swap, and it'd be expensive given that you need to have a shop install it.

I have a manifold that will mate up to your turbo...it uses the mitsubishi flange...as long as it's a turbo coming off of a mitsubishi and has the mits. center cartridge for the turbo....it will work..I was running the mitsubishi TDo5-big16g which is an upgrade for the 1st and 2nd gen eclipse....hit me with a pm..

i would just get a msp exhaust manoifold, use the T25 from your buddy and then pick up a downpipe. Then just get an IC and some pipes, either way it wont be that bad. Get an EMS ASAP. If you can dodge the price of the turbo by getting it from your friend, the rest could be done fairly inexpensive aside from the EMS.

If it came off the mitsubishi GSX it wont mate up....the center section is not the same...as the other T- turbo's....example..a t2, t3 flange...the mitsubishi cars uses there own flange...

so from what I gather I should be good with the manifold from supa saiyan (since it came off of an eclipse there aren't many options). I'll need a custom downpipe (still curiouse caue my friend says the downpipe connects directly to the manifold on his turbo). I need an 02 clamp with FMU such as what BEGI offers. Supa saiyan also has the piping and FMIC that will fit. and what's left should be the all the smaller parts. It's sounding as though I could start getting the parts for this and get my car turbo'd fairly cheap and running about 5-7psi. Any other opinions?

i can hook you up with a brand new mazdaspeed ecu which will manage for that t25 just fine
is that an oem ecu or something us mazdaspeedsters can improve with?
