The Ohio Random Thread... aka We Should Probably Be Working

so here's a crazy idea... I'm tired of all my debt, it'll take too long to pay everything off at the rate I'm going. If I sell the MSM and get the BMW to a good shape, I won't have a car payment and will be able to pay everything off considerably faster... I love the car, but I hate hanging on to physical things. I can always get something else later, an NC or whatever...

don't worry pablo, i'm in the same boat with that way of thinking; i'm hoping by around may or june i can sell my MSM...i love and want to keep it...but i'd like to make about 500 bucks more a month in order for it to be worth it for me...i thought that i could afford it and pay off things...turns out i just afford and barely pay off other loans...
i've thought about doing a second job, but i'd rather have only one crappy car and a life than a crappy and nice car and no life...(or i need to find a job that pays more, lol; where i'm at now, i can only get 2 more an hour, then i'm capped and pretty much have to find another job where i make more money...)

I love how easy going you guys are being about the possibility of the car breaking down. A few hundred to get it back on the road doesn't sound bad, but what about the down time? What if it's some whacky, special part, and it takes longer than overnight to get? Can you go without a car for an extended period of time?

Steph and I had to share the Tbeezy for a week this past time the P5 left me stranded, and I wanted to kill myself!!! hahaha

I would spend as much as I can on the debt, but if something comes up for the BMW then I won't be worried that I can't pay for it

Sounds like a good plan, if at all possible is you could break down your payments on a bi-weekly basis as opposed to a monthly basis, it will also help you to pay off debt quickly. After being laid off of two jobs, we have also cut back on other expenses, like cable, credit card debt ( 6 mos same as cash or pay cash for it), making combined trips to save gas, etc. It has put us back in the black and try to pay more than the minimum payment on your credit card, that is the real killer.

Downtime can be an issue sometimes, but thankfully sourcing parts for an E30 is pretty easy. The dealership normally stocks a lot of the older stuff since it's common across many model lines (and usually cheaper than Auto Zone / Advanced / NAPA). NAPA carries a lot in stock too.

It's a gamble, but one that I would probably take if I was in your shoes. That being said, I tend to be the odd one of this bunch when it comes to cars and car decisions.

I just didn't want you to be nickle and dimed to death with the BMW, that's my main worry. Since it will be your only car you'll be putting a lot of miles on it (not divided among the two cars). I just don't want the same thing to happen to you that happened to me with my first car, a POS Honda CRX I bought with 60k miles about 15 years ago. It was like every paycheck something was breaking on it and had to be replaced. I couldn't get ahead on bills since the car kept sucking money away.

What about getting a part time job and keeping your current bill/car situation and using the part time job money towards bills? Like pizza delivery? I've thought about doing that a lot since I don't really do much after work and have no life. I wouldn't mind driving around in the Milly listening to music all night. Just a suggestion. My hugs are always free though!

I do, but on film. This is back in 1999. It had the 1.6l dual port injection 8valve motor. With an auto. Slow as balls. A dark red. The motor was burning oil so much it was like a smoke screen. And it only had 68k miles on it when I sold it to a friend for $600 and bought my white 93 EG Civic hatch.

Anyway, back on Pablo's topic.

that's a tough call Pablo, being debt free is pretty awesome. If you feel the bmw can last you a while with minimal maintenance I'd say sell the MSM.

I've thought about the part time again but last time it didn't go very well (I was told I looked like a dead fish). The thing is, I've been using my down time for personal and professional development, which is paying off. I've lost weight and feel better, and I'm learning stuff for work that allows me to be more involved. That helps me justify my promotion and helps me keep a good score for my next review.

I won't be in a rush to sell it, and I'll lower my debt on it as well since I won't be able to sell it for what I paid for it, even though its in better shape. I'll be working on the bmw, if the MSM (for a decent price) sells great, if not then I'll have both.

^^^ Huh? You look like a dead fish? Is that a typo?

Soooo, you're going to keep the MSM and BMW and not have any additional source of income? Doesn't sound like any kind of a solution to me, buddy. I are confused.

no typo, but that needed better context. I had a really hard time finding a part time, ended up loading trucks for UPS. After two weeks I decided to quit because I was exhausted all the time, and all that work didn't seem worth it for the money. When I told my boss at my full time job that I was quitting, he literally said: "Good, because you were starting to look like a dead fish". Wasn't very nice of him considering he knew why I was working a part time.

So, I'd rather keep focusing on myself, learning more stuff and keep loosing weight. As for the car, I owe a little more than what it's worth in the market so I won't be in a hurry to sell it. If a good offer comes along then fine, if not the I'll pay it off a little more and try a little harder to sell it. And if it doesn't sell (or I change my mind like I often do) then so be it. In the meantime, I'll be working on the bimmer to have it ready for next winter, no rush until the MSM is sold. I can get by for now, I just won't be paying stuff as fast as I'd like to.

I'd say go for whatever makes you happy, Pablo. Life's too long to be miserable. If being debt free will make you happier than having a nice car and a crappy car, then do what it takes to get out of the red. I'm excited to see the new skinny sleezy, though! (upbum)

Good morning...lol

Pablo, you've obviously put some good thought into this and others have given some pretty good advice too. In the end, I agree that you should do what makes you happy or what will lead to that happiness.

Taking the Boxers to the vet, then finally getting around to cleaning the Wagon up in the detail bays at work. I've had anxiety for the past 2 weeks over it being as dirty as it is, but it's been too cold to do it at home. lol
