Me either. Staring at a computer for 8+ hours a day will do that.
 
Yup...same here If I don't use eye drops multiple times throughout the day...my eyes dry up and I get the worst headaches.

Me either. Especially in the summer. In the winter it's a little harder because there is less going on.

I'm going to be purchasing tires strictly for track use. I've been thinking about racing slicks, but I don't think I have the money for them. Plus, I would like to get a lot more experience first. I won't be doing any competition racing, just NASA HPDE and maybe a few AutoX events for fun.

I've been looking at the Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec, I believe a lot of people here recommend that tire. Unfortunately, they're $199 a tire for 235/40/18 on Tire Rack.

The other tire I was looking at was the Nitto NT05. I can find these for about $170 a tire. What's odd is I don't see any Nitto tires on Tire Rack. Anyone ever use these??


I also looked at Continental ExtremeContact DW, but these tires look like they're more for street use. I found these for $168 on Tire Rack, and I think Marlon mentioned something about getting $80 off. I then found the same tire for $130, but it says Closeout. The only difference I can find is the $168 tires are 95Y and the $130 ties are 91Y.

TR doesn't carry Nitto. But DiscountTireDirect does, they price match (find best shipped price online and they'll match it), and they ship from Columbus. I ordered my NT-01's at 5:30 at night and had them the next day.

You could also check out the SCCA forums, NASA forums, or JBRacingTires.net for some used racing slicks.

Edit: I'm going to second Marlon's vote for the NT-01. I've got a set for my Miata.

Evan #2, Happy Belated Birthday! If you are lookig for a decent track tire, look at the Nitto NT-01, they're a DOT-R tire and unshaved they're a great tire that you can drive to and from the track, 100 treadwear. Just putting it out there fo rya!

I didn't even notice the NT-01. They look pretty crazy haha. Discount Tire has them for $222 each. Also, they have a note that these tires should be Heat Cycled? Discount Tire offers heat cycling for $15 a tire. Do you think this would be necessary?

Thanks for the advice, I might end up going with the NT-01. I'll also check those forums and see if anyone has low-priced used slicks that fit my wheels.
 
I had the dunlaps on the msp and liked them alot, they weren't the sport (softer compund) though.

I'm starting my wheel search since I sold the evo wheels, I'm leaning towards the rpf1's but I don't know if I'll like the silver on a silver car. The SBC finish might be an option but they of course cost a little more.
 
I'm going to put my vote in for the 140 treadwear R1R's.

I don't know if the big sizes run wide like the small ones but I can tell you the 195/50/15s I got would have been right at home on an 8" rim. They were REAL wide. I've had 4 sets so far. Made the switch to Star Specs this year and hated them. I love my R1Rs :) I got 15k hard street miles on them, but granted that was a 2,000lb Miata. I don't know how fast they'd wear on a heavier car. I've taken 2 sets to the track also, they held up pretty well for how hard I pushed them :) (both on FWD vehicles)

Stuart is a manager for Discount tire in Columbus, I am sure he can hook you up with a decent price on the NItto's
 
No to the heat cycling. I didn't get it done to my NT-01s. It happens during that first track session ;) just don't go flat out while you are wearing off the molding agent.

FWIW, treadwear is not created equal across brands.
 
I ran Nitto NT-01 for several years. before switching to Hoosier. Great track tire! Not the fastest one out there, but they are fast, withstand heat and wear very well. The NT-01 is the same compound as the Toyo RA1. There is absolutely no reason to heat cycle NT-01s. Just take it easy the first few laps. One set will last 6-8 track weekends. The only problem as an only tire is the tread is only halfway through the usable rubber on the tire so if it rains you are in trouble. And if you hit a nail or piece of glass, then there is no tread depth to protect from punctures.
