Superprotege still racing awaiting the completion of his big brother, supermazda3

Today is D-Day

Thanks for all the kind response and support. To answers, Lunatik's question: Superprotege has been daily driving and racing all this time on a stock. Hopefully the built head will take us pass 11.9s.

We have been working till midnight for the past 3 days to get the car ready. All the parts came in yesterday and we are hoping to have the car ready late evening today so we can dyno test tonight.

Hope to see some of you guys tomorrow at Moroso.

Please see the pics below of the progress and some of the parts I took pics of.

Is that the Quaiffe going into the M3?!And was the 2.3 head worked? Looks like it has something done to it.

We had a ruff today

Just wanted to give you guys an update on what happened today.

We spend the majority of the day working on Supermazda3 trying to get it ready but we ran in several problems such burning 2 coils, bad 1000cc injectors and blown engine fuse. Supermazda 3 was finally cranked up for the first time after the build at 4:30 pm and was street tuned on the way to the track. We had put what we thought were 750cc injectors to replace the bad 1000cc but discovered, while street tuning, that the injectors were only 550cc. We were only able to safely boost 16 psi on these injectors.we

When arrived at the track, Turbo Street Class was running and we were told it was too late to pass inspections for that class. We were advised that the only class we could run in was the bracket class. Our plan was to run Supermazda3 in the Turbo Street Class and Superprotege in the bracket class because Manuel would be driving both cars. This plan had to be revised based on when we arrived at the track.

Supermazda3 ran a 13 seceond pass on its intially run and on the second run, it went down to 12.7s at 16 psi. Superprotge ran with full exhaust (we thought open exhaust was not allowed in the bracket class) a dissappointing 12.9s. The car was boosting 23 psi but had shifting issues in 2nd gear and was affected by the fulll exhaust.

We are planning to change the injectors on Supermazda3 to 750cc for tomorrow and turn up the boost. We are planning to turn up the boost on Superprotege, do some street tuning (has not been retuned since the new head was installed) and run open exhaust. We are not going to try to stay consistent tomorrow as you should in bracket racing but we are just going to run hard and call it a day.

We are very dissappointed with the results but are very happy that we got a 2008 Mazda3 race ready in 3 days. We did not think we were going to make it. The car looks sick with the slicks and skinnies on it. I forget my camera at the shop and will upload the pics and hopefully videos of tomorrow's runs (no video was taken for today's runs).

Damn I thought you guys were going to be there earlier so I had been looking everywhere for the cars. I got there at around 2 and left at like 5 30.

Stay tuned

We arrived at the tracks after 1:30 pm on Sunday and within an hour the rain started coming down. The rest of the event was cancelled due to the lightining accompanying the rain.

Before going to the tracks, we verified that the injector on Supermazda3 were 550cc not 750cc. We changed them and street tuned the car on the way to the tracks. The car was pulling very strong at 18psi. We street tested Superprotege also and it is running like a monster now with the new head.

We are planning to go the tracks on a early on a Friday to see what times both cars are running.

Before the rain came down at the tracks, we had an oppourtunity to speak with one of the techs for Karagiannis Racing who are running a fully built Mazda3 in the Modified Class. They are using the same 2.3L engine sleeved like we plan to do, decked and some other secret things that he would not tell us. The tech advised that with no nitrous and 40-50 psi, they are making 1300 whp. I did not know then but I just checked the results and founds out that they were the #1 qualifiers in their class at 7.456s and 180.97 mph. We are encouraged about the potential of the 2.3L engine.

Once we get the sleeved block and built head for Supermazda3, it should make some big power. I am going to take some pics of the turbo for built engine.

That 3 was insane I saw it do the 7.45 180mph run and got a video but my camera sucks. I also have pics of a MSP I saw which I believe is dannyboy17's car.

wow how did they convert it to RWD. did they share that with you? SuperMazda3 looks BADASS with the rims. I like them a lot. Looks mean. Just needs a lip IMO.

It's been a while but we are still racing

I have been very busy at work and have not been on the forum in a while. We went to a mazda meet on 4/18/08 at Moroso Motorsports Park but did not do as well as we wanted and this is another reason why I have not posted anything either.

Results

Superprotege ran 122 mph (its highest mph to date) but missed 4th gear and only ran 12.0.

Supermazda3 ran 12.3 @ 108 mph at around 17-18 psi.

Status of the big engine for Supermazda3

While the builder was in the process of sleeving the block, he discovered a crack in the engine block and that engine block would not safe to run 30+ psi. We need to get a new engine or buy a used one with low miles. We have applied for sponsorship to complete the project and are awaiting the outcome of our request. In the meantime, we are planning to squeeze the maximum power from Supermazda3 stock engine we built like we did on the protege.

Dyno & Track Result 5/17/08 at Moroso

Dyno

Superprotege ran 397 whp like before

Supermazda3 ran 403 whp @ 22 psi

Track

Superprotege beat its previous record of 11.96 and ran 11.92 @ 117 mph

Supermazda3 ran 12.5 but the clutch was slipping on every run.

Future Plans

Moroso is now close till fall due to renovation plans for the track. We need to spend some money on Superprotege to get it to low 11s. It needs new slicks, lightened wheels and close ratio gears. We plan to do some more tuning to Supermazda3 to run more boost and if it takes, we may go to the tracks at Bradenton to see if it can hopefully run low 11s. Stay tuned

Awesome...i'm glad i'm not home cause I wouldn't even be able to run since the issue with the track being closed. At least it's going to be a much better track once re-opened. Meaning even faster times. :)

I think you'll find its not a "converted" rwd car... it'd be a fully custom built tube chassis, with a mazda 3 looking body (likely out of something light weight like FG or CF) slung over the top of it...its pretty common. There are plenty of lightning fast RWD compact drag cars that get their body styling from FWD and AWD cars.

So yeah, looks like a mazda 3, but is no more a mazda 3 than your big toe is a ferrari :P

I don't know if you're referring to supermazda3 or the full drag car in the pics above in blue. I spoke with Manuel a few weeks after that event and he confirmed the Mazda3 engine in the blue drag car and it is converted to RWD. All custom parts of course. But I get what you mean about the tube bodies etc.

full drag car - doesn't matter what engine its got, its hardly a "conversion" - its more a completely custom built car...engine orientation doesn't overly matter, its probably running an adapter plate with some sort of clutchless race box and so forth..., it looks pretty awesome tho :P

Dammit I wanna say conversion instead of "adapter plate". But yea thanks for letting me know the technical name. Being all custom must suck when something breaks huh.

The project is still on the way

It has been awhile and even I was discouraged that the project would die. I happy to announce that we purchased a brand new 2.3L block which was dropped off to the engine builder yesterday to be sleeved and bored out to 2.6L.

Please see the pics below of the turbo that the new engine will spool. Currently, the car has a GT35R on the stock block that has been built.
