Suggestions on Subwoofers

if u want the best, and the loudest go with a 15" mmats juggernaut, thats wat i got in my car, but prepared to have no trunk cuz they take up alot of air space my box is almost 8 cu. ft. ive hit 149 at many shows and 150 one time usin a 1200 watt d300 mmats amp

Becuase you haven't picked up on it, the majority of the pioepl in here are interested in SQ over SPL!

A MMATTs 15" is anything but SQ

8's are a waste of money

:bs:

I have built a box with 4 JL audio 8 W3's that I have atleast 2 new customers a month coming to see me about. The damn thing has made me more buisness then I can shake astick at.

Also go to a tweeter and listen to the martin logan tripple 8" sub. IT WILL TEAR YOUR HEAD OFF!

Being a waste is relitive, to DB even a 8" can be effective, atleast as much as a 15" can be effective at SQ.

1 10 would be better then multiple 8's, 8's cant hit low bass for s*** no matter what brand it is

Since we are talking SQ here, an 8 can easily go low enough to reproduce true music. Bass machines are a different subject all together. Not everyone likes to blast DJ Magic Mike.

To amny a sub should be a musical instrument of its own, not a bass generator.

Not necessarily, it all depends on what you want from your system. And what kind of music you listen too. If you are going for SPL, then yes 8s are probably a waste of money, but if space is a concern, and you are more concerned with SQ then SPL 8s may be just the ticket. I replaced the mazdaspeed stock 8" subwoofer with a JL audio 8" subwoofer and it's much better then the kenwood sub. It's no 10" or 12", but you can't expect miracles from a small speaker. But mulitple 8s in a small enclosure, that has potential.

I would only get JL audio 8's or the edesign 8s (which happen to look very nice) Obviously if I can go with 10s and still keep my trunk space to a reasonable amount I will. We'll see how things go after I talk to my installer and see what we can fabricate with my goals in mind. But I have a feeling that multi 8s 3/4 will fit my needs nicer then a single 10.

The big problem with the MSP/P5 is the lack of space in the spare tire well because of the hump. That is what I want to look at first. That's why I am looking at multi 8s. If I can't do something in there and keep the floor low enough, I'll look at other areas of trunk and all other speaker sizes.

okay, it's 3am, time to quite rambling and to bed.

Under the blue grill were my 4 8W3's

Eek! That's an autocross nightmare! Unless that's all really solidly bolted down, they'd pitch a fit. Looks freakin awesome, though! 4x8...like a guitar amp cab (4x10, 4x12 usually) but that's really cool. I wonder if a slant cab concept from guitar amps would work in a like manner w/ that 4x8 setup...It'd have to go to "11" though!

Very nice, You don't happen to have the plans for that bad boy do you? How high did that raise the floor of the trunk?

You'd have a better chance of seeing Jesus in person then getting any peice of that install to move. Everything except the top was bolted thorugh the floor and the top was pressure fit but was so tight you had to jimmy one side off.

I found that in the Pro sedan its best to not face subs back as often sub boxes against the back seat block air form entering that way and from the rear deck. When I rebuilt it to have teh 4 8's facing back there was WAY less bass and some messed up acoustical issues that JL couldn't even figure out.

No plans but I did it all so I can give you any advice you need.
Its just a fiberglass box. I might have the grill template laying around at the shop but it may have been killed in the Squiggy s*** wood incodent.
The box set the height of the floor, also keep in mind that box was WAY to big. THe floor could have been 2" lower. The 8's can't be centered becuase of the hump in the tire well.

The floor was a total of 5-6 " higher, I can't remeber as that was my 1st fo 4 installs in the MP3

Which way is back? Do you mean with the cone facing out of the trunk of the cone firing towards the passanger compartment. Trying to make sure before I start my fiberglass.

If you find the grill template hook me up. I am going to show the picture to the shop that would be doing the fiberglassing today. That is exactly what I want.

Some tips I can offer would be to make the plexiglass covers DEEP so you can make a grill for over them aswell then you have a totaly usable trunk.I will be at the shop tomarrow and I will look for it.

Damn...so presenting the cone out of the trunk = not as good.
Eh...I'll talk to you about it when I see you next weekend.

Oh...how does the plexi effect sound on an enclosure? (like say for instance you added a porthole to a sealed box, to see inside it)

It won't effect ti at all so long as the glass is thick but it needs to be ATLEAST 1/2" whihc isn't very cheap

Hey Craig, I talked to the shop and got some good plans going for something very similar to your set-up. 4 JL Audio w3v2 8" being powered by a 500/1.

Hit me up on AIM, MSN, or Yahoo you can see my screennames in my profile thingy.

I would love to get as many pics of your install as possible. Right now looking at just grills over the subs, flush mounted with the rear floor. Plexi over the amps with either a JL audio cut into the board over the amps or clear plexi with a JL audio cut-out in between them. I'll have to make some quick little sketches in paint or something to upload. But any pictures you have of your install or something similar will help me decide what to do.

1st MP3, why didn't your install last long? Is it because you are trying to sell car or just try different setups? Just curious

MisterT

That install was to hold me over until the Xtant X1001 arrived which was 3 months later, then I rebuilt it for that. unforunity do to time contraints, i could not reuse the floor setup.
