Sue Mazda?

From my experience...

Car started bucking a little bit when stopped. This all happened after a 20 mile ride or so to the airport and did 70 the whole way. Didn't notice anything till the car was stopped and it was fine when I left. Then I heard a hard knock or clang. Mine came in and out sometimes doing it sometimes not. Sometimes just constant. I would cut the engine off and on to hear what was going on and to get it to stop or start back up again.

Yes, definitely inside the engine compartment. You can hear it outside the car easily. I don't think I got any CEL's though. This was at about 30k miles. around 33-34 now. 2003.5 MY.

I don't hear any sounds anymore...I guess I will have to either TSB comes out for this or problem shows up again.

Damn...

I clicked on this thread hoping to find an old girlfriend: Sue Mazda. Of course, that was her maiden name.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! God, I crack myself up!

ok, I just test drove them again...after driving for 8 miles and on my way home I was about to park my car and all of sudden car seemed to have misfiring again. but idle was really normal, it wasn't moving but noise was constant.
I didn't hear any loud knocking noises from engine compartment either but exhuast was making constant misfiring noises.
here's the sound clip. sound wasn't that great so I went out there to record noise again but car seems to be fine..again..wtf?
let me know if these sounds seems familiar.
perhaps it's my Ignition Coil causing misfiring? but why is my idle so stable

Mazda issued a recall # 3005 C for the loose screws falling out. I just got the bulletin in.
If you paid to have it repaired you can get reimbursed.

My 03 Hofu was made 9/02, is there any way to check which production months this affected? I have no problem yet, but if it's a recall I want a dealership to check over the engine BEFORE the problem occurs.

EDIT: There is a thread started about the recall here:

http://www.clubprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21331

It is for vehicles produced between March 3 2003 and July 31, 2003. I'm safe I guess... (sun)

Not necessarily. I am not on the recall list and I had mine do the EXACT same thing they describe in the recall. I think that the problem is larger than what Mazda is saying right now.

Great.... (nailbyt) Ok, here's my question though. According to Edwin Man's faq (http://web2.airmail.net/theman/protegefaq/):

Proteg 5's and all Mazda3s are built at the Hofu 1 plant near

If this is true, than almost all 2003 protege's should be suspect, but I know at some point they started making them at Hiroshia too. Anyway, there is a recall thread started here, so I'll be posting in there about this issue from now on:

as I posted in another thread just now, seems like MAZDA saying that release dates of Protege's from march 3rd 2003 to July 31st 2003 are being affected by the recall. Mine falls in the criteria, although I havent received the recall letter yet. BUT in any case, on mazdausa.com it says that I have a recall.

I just got a letter yesterday about the recall. I have an 03.5 if that makes any difference. Should I take off my intake before I bring it in?

2003 Protege Intake Manifold Shutter Valve Emission Recall 3005C
Model: 2003 protege
VIN range: JM1BJ****3* 181114 - 219674
Build Date Range: 3/3/03 - 7/31/03

THANKS!

Your info has helped me tremendously-

I found mettalic metal in #4 cylinder after finding my plug was bent (check engine light). Opened up air intake to find TWO butterfly valves missing from spindle, found inside along with two loose screws in the air intake manifold. The butterfly had a HUGE chunk missing from it - hence the metal in the cylinder. All screws were accounted for, but at least two were bound to find there way into the engine eventually. After repaing the plug and removing the metal, I drove it before finding the one broken and second dislocated butterfly valves - it ran pretty well considering, although I was very much babying it.

So far I'm screwed - they wont sell the butterfly valve disks separatley, I have to buy the entire air intake!!!! ($600) - (63,650 miles)

I am very tempted to fabricate this part as 1) it runs pretty well without it so I can be conservative on the size, and 2) I just don't want it to fall off - easy objective with new screws from kit.

Anyone know where I can get these butterfly valves before I jury rig something???

THANKS AGAIN!!!

Woah! I'm not 100%, but I think someone (the dealer) is trying to sell you an intake manifold for $600! Check over here: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123628091, there may be one left - I just got an intake mani for $35 shipped.

Edit: I picked up this mani to take the VTCS butterflies out and do a port 'n polish.

YUP they have to do it, my car would still be in warrantee but it's got a branded title so Mazda voided any commitment to the warrantee. They had no problems performing the recall though. Took 3.5 hrs

HUH??

I have been badgering them hard to commit to paying for the issue if it is determined to be the same as the recall (even though mine was not on the recall list) and they are not budging - they won't even commit to stating they will assist me in the costs to correct it (again provided they agree it is defective workmanship>!)

like he said, his VIN wasn't included in the recall, so the dealer can be as much of an ass as they want to be

Really,
I do need the gas mileage, how bad would it be?? 27-28 MPG??

I never noticed it running badly with 2 of the 4 butterflys missing-

please tell
