subscribing hoping to hear an ETA about a recall... I have read so much on this I am so confused about whether I am at risk or not...
ur an '02. U shouldn't be affected.

bratliff, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Most of the people who have had problems with this are not 2002 owners and have come out of the Hofu plant. I'm not saying it isn't going to happen to you, but don't lose any sleep over it.

dont forget 2001 MP3 models. Few of them had this problem.

Its good to get a little reassurance, mine is an early 02... has about 53K on it. I test drove an 01 MP3 first... really liked the car, but it kept misfiring and throwing a CEL... almost left me walking... the P5 is much more useful in my opinion.. Thanks for the info.. I am super anal so I will continue to watch..

Doomed?

so i've had my2003.5 protege for about 10 months now, put about 15k miles on it, and it's got a little over 20k miles so far. no mods, no plans for any mods - love this car, but am I doomed to having this same VICS problem too?

no...word on da screet says we're on the verge of having a recall to fix the VICS

No word yet guys. It may be days or weeks before they get all the stuff together, who knows.

I shall be watching this thread closely...my 03 P5 has 43k on it now. About 1k ago I picked up a stumble at low idle, the engine misfired and threw off a CEL. At the dealer they diagnosed a misfire on cyl #2; but blamed it on the Bosh plugs I put in at 30k....
BTW Mazda just sent me an emissions recall on the wife's 01 Miata....

as of right now which production dates and from which factory are most of the problems with the vics occuring? my car was made in hiroshima/hofu and i think the production date was 8/02. I sure as hell hope i don't have any probs before/if they have a recall.

I'd blame it on the Bosch plugs too :)

Don't worry that much, there will be a recall soon from the sound of it, so even if it does happen before the recall, it sounds like Mazda will take care of you...

Just be patient!

the window sticker has it written like this, "assembly point:hiroshima/hofu,japan." i can scan it if you like.

A recall is not affected by mileage or time unless specified by Mazda.

Question; If a recall DOES happen, will this affect vehicles out of warranty due to mileage?
yeah, generally TSB's will be taken car of under warranty, and u usually have to pay if ur out of it. As a rule, the manufacturer covers recalls

Nah its kewl. I believe you man. Its just weird. Maybe one plant ran out of parts and they sent half of your car to the 2nd plant? Mine says only Hofu, Japan.

Any idea what the prod #'s are involved? My P5 was built on 2002, but it's a 2003 model...so far no probs other than the Bosch plugs causing an issue.. are Mazda's really that sensitive to Bosch VS Ngk plugs? I've put Bosch's in my lat two cars (Toyotas) with no issues! WTF!

japanese cars run better on ngk or densos. they are also better plugs thats why they come standard in like nearly every japanese car. hell they even come in bmws from the factory.

NJP5GUY, the plant designation digit for Hiroshima & Hofu in the VIN is the 7th digit starting from the end & counting back to left. Zero = Hiroshima & 1 = Hofu. I have the dirty 1 there & my car is June 2003 so I am patiently awaiting info about what stretch of VINs or production dates are involved in the recall. I'm going on 40k with no problems yet (knock on wood)..........
