I am thinking about buying a jet ski, and this dealer in MA is telling me that there is a 139 "documentation fee" that the state sats they have to charge me. Any idea what this is or what its for or if its real? I wonder if they are just trying to recoup the money i just got them to knock off the price.....

ask the MA DMV? I would think it's a sales tax or registration fee. Lots of states have on for jet ski's/boats or generally any motor powered vehicle larger than a scooter. $139 sounds like *a lot* for such though.

yea...its not sales tax because we talked about that separately, they list it as a delivered or shipped sale and I pay tax in CT when i register it...also it shouldnt be a registration fee (i wouldnt think) since I wont be registering it in MA

If it's not tax or registration it's not a real fee. there's no state that I know of that charges an additional fee separate form sales tax that has nothing to do with registration.

What should I do if I am buying or selling a boat?
In order to execute a boat transaction, the following items are necessary:
  • Bill of sale
  • 12-character serial number (HIN) pencil tracing
  • Proof of payment of Massachusetts' sales tax
  • A completed application
  • Appropriate fees
  • Title from seller if applicable
can't find anything about documentaion fees...but it sounds familiar?

appropriate fees would be registration fee. I can't imagine they would have a registration fee *and* a totally separate fee that just so happens to be charged at the same time when registering the vehicle and it *not* be a registration fee.

i kind of figured that...as i was saying this was the only thing i could find...chris won't be reg it in ma. chris, is this a marine/boat dealer or car dealer?

recreational vehicle dealer so....bikes jet skis quads etc....

he mentioned something about "if they do it for one they have to do it across the board" which maybe means its a registration related fee for the stuff they do register but for some reason they still need to do the same documentation and charge the same fee even when not registering? Maybe I will call tomorrow morning and ask for the specifics, tell him I am trying to find mention on the state of MA website of what the fee is for...

Yeah its possible its legit, but sounds like hes milking an extra 140 bucks out of you.

If it's the state that has to charge you this fee...and it's not tax...then I don't see why the dealer should be collecting it. If it's a state fee (again, that's not tax) then I would think that'd they would just make you pay that fee when you register it. But it's Mass, so who really knows lol. I'd call the DMV and ask them what this "documentation fee" is and if it's legit. If it isn't...hang up and call the Better Business Bureau :)

the co you're buying it from should be able to tell you why and what this fee is for

yea, so i asked for clarification today and he said its a dealer prep fee. Nothing to do with the state.....meh

I wouldn't buy from them just on that basis. BS fees like that piss me off.

Its like buying a TV and having best buy add on a shelving fee. Though I wouldn't put it past them either.

Next they will charge for lot storage fees onto new vehicles.

"Well sir we took delivery of this vehicle 6 months ago to our lot, so that's $3 per day and so you owe us an extra $550 dollars."

"We also took the plastic off the seats and put on our dealer sticker on the back so that's another $200."

normally i would, but I think its a really good price as it is...so im just gonna deal with it. Their asking price was really reasonable I thought, and I got them to go down another 450...im guessing they would have tagged on the 139 fee even if I was paying their asking price so....w/e

Most dealerships no matter how big or small have Doc fee's. Some place's are just higher than others. Boch dealerships have close to a 2k doc fee my dealership I work at has about a $200 if not less . Just a way to recoup cost's, that and there is some running around done behind the office that alot of us don't see. Though them saying its State Mandated is very troubling that or the person was seriously trained wrong. Oh and you can also negotiate doc fee's, usually they just take a hit on the actual cost on the vehicle, especially if your putting those fee's into the payment plan of the thing.
