SkyActiv Oil Analysis Thread

This report from January 2024 shows four samples on the CX-3. Went with Castrol, Pennzoil, Mobil 1, Valvoline as long as they are full synthetic 0w20 (5w30 once or twice). The closest I got to oem was Zepro/Idemitsu when available for under $30 on Amazon in 2018 and 2019. Filter-wise, Bosch or anything around $10. For my last oil change this May, I used Royal Purple to see how "premium" ($33) feels. The car was much quieter for the first two weeks or so. and the MPG has gone up. Next change is coming up in two weeks. Will use RP again with RP filter ($18). A further step up would be LM.

If I sound too casual about oil/filter that's because I drive 2K+ miles a month and own much older cars with varying needs. My ex daily driver is a 2011 R56. It wouldn't have reached 202K miles if I believed that she knows what she needs (15K miles OCI).

Which oil was sampled on 08/04/2019? It has too much calcium and not enough magnesium for these engines.

And your most recent oil sampled on 01/17/2024 looks like 5W-30 based on the viscosity. No way that was 0W-20 after 9,000 miles.

You are correct. I noticed that the top of the report says that most recent sample was from 5w30. Let me check my order history for the August 2019 sample. I usually order oil a few weeks ahead of time. On 3/6/2019 I ordered Zepro Eco Medalist 0w20... It was Zepro (https://www.amazon.com/dp/ (commissions earned))! In an email to the lab contact I stated so to make sense of the higher moly figure.

That Idemitsu was the closest you could get to the Mazda OEM high-moly oil (also made by Idemitsu)

Note that most modern oils are already using advanced forms of moly that are 2-3x more effective per part than standard moly, and even better if they are also using boron, which is another friction modifier that works from colder temperatures. These modern oils are formulated such that everything is balanced, because some additives have effects on others in the bottle.
