Shock Advice

I've got the GC Coiovers on and I like them a lot. I think they compliment the stock shocks really well. Now all I have to do is lower it. I want it anotehr inch down or so but I don't want to blow the shock or even decrease the life of them. What I want to do is cut the shock piston down an inch and have it rethreaded. Is this possible? Can normal auto shops do this or do I have to go to some machine shop.

I think Mazda Motorsports sells reworked Bilstein strut inserts that you can use in the stock strut.
