Shift Knob Vibration on p5.. help

it will always be there. our shifter is connected with a rod, not a cable and it transmits vibration to the knob.

does it really matter though? you shouldnt notice it unless you rest your hand on it, which is bad for it and you should stop right now if you are.

i like the feel of it, even more with the kartboy setup. i feel connected to my baby.

I love my Kartboy kit, but if you install the bushings you'll get a faint gear whine to add to your vibration. Neither one bothers me though.

kartboy is great. some people get the whine. i just discovered that i do get the whine now after 10,000 miles in 5th gear only under slight acceleration with no music on. so that means i rarely hear it.

search about the resting hand on shifter thing, there be pages on it and i dont want to rehash it. theres even some cool drawring by theMAN ;)

I got only good results from the kartboy bushing. . .no negatives. . . I also agree you should not rest your hand on the shifter as you drive. . .(that doesn't mean I practice what I preach though). Damn me and my bad habits. Either way, you should not rest you hand on it. . .just adding a few extra forces to the mix. . .and if our tranny is as bad as people make it out to be, then we should give it a break. :D

I just bought the kartboy with bushings.. it should be here in 3 days(thats what it said), So im gonna through that in and hope its worth the money.. Are there any quick tips? I saw someone write that i need to pull the firewall away a bit? thanks

If by firewall you mean the heat shield directly below the shift lever, you're right ;)

heat shield is what youre thinkin of joe...with my b&m i didnt have to move it at all

nowhere in the mazda protege manual does it say not to rest your hand on the shifter.
im sure lots of people do that....and if the tranny wouldnt be able to take it then im sure mazda would say so in it's owners manual.

c'mon guys how fragile can it be? it's not made form cardboard.
we cant go by what one guy tells us...unless he works for mazda technical department. (uhm)

do what you want. its your tranny. Though you should perhaps research before you speak as though i am wrong.

and just dont post a "WTF my tranny died, stupid mazda" thread if it does. :p

The manual doesnt say dont do clutch drops either or neutral drops, but those arent good for the tranny either.

You dont rest your hand on the shifter because it does not allow the synchos to sit in the desired position. If you add any lateral pressure (left/right) to the shifter you are in effect always pushing it a little bit out of gear. This is not as noticeable on our sticks, which sit upright. However on cars where the shifter is tilted (like trucks), if you rest your hand on it, the gear that you rest it in will become worn.
I knew a woman who rested her hand on third in her truck, because this is the gear she used for her rural commute.
Eventually third gear failed.

nope it's not in the manual... manuals dun teach you how to drive, or tells you what your bad habbits are... and remember... mazda tech fav. phrase "b/c of YOUR bad driving skills that this warrentee is not valid"

just my 2... :D
