Rush in a Car Crash! (MSP Totaled)

I have a feeling I'm going to wind up driving my dad's ES as-is for awhile. Financially speaking, with college expenses, I just can't justify plunking down thousands on a 'better' car -- when I have a good DD that's being handed to me for free. While my heart is screaming for me to either fix my MSP or buy another stock one and swap everything over or take my Dad's ES and swap everything over .. when you think about it logically, it simply does NOT make sense and isn't the best long-term solution.

However .. unless the salvage value of my MSP is abnormally high, as of this moment, I'm pretty sure I'm going to be buying it back. There are some little things I can pull off it to put on my Dad's car (the shifter, my sound system, some interior and exterior CF pieces, cause God forbid I drive any car without some CF on it!) .. and that will help to make his Protege feel more like 'home'.

I'm also very sure that selling all the parts I have on it will make up for the salvage value. My exhaust system alone is worth $1000, nevermind the FMIC kit, manifolds, and blah-dee-blah of everything else.

Again, thanks so much for the help and suggestions! I'm still waiting on the 'final' call from insurance, and that will help bring a little more closure.

Hey Rush, chin up. It'll all work out.
It's great that you weren't hurt at all. That car kept you safe!
It'll still be nice to be able to move some of your mods over.
You'll be really glad when it comes time to move into something better. You'll be able to justify it because you deserve it after your accident.
For now keep on with the ES and it'll at least be reliable.

Good luck!

As many other people, i loved your MSP, and im sure that what ever project you take on next will be just as clean, and unique. Take it eazy for a while,
"Time Heals all wounds"
drive the ES untill you know exactly what you want to do.

Thanks for all the support and kind words, guys .. It really means a lot in a time like this.

I think I might still be in a state of shock, though. I keep looking out the front windows of my house and wondering where my car is. It's almost like the accident yesterday was some kind of bad dream, even though I hardly got any sleep last night! I just keep sitting here, thinking to myself -- what if I'd turned the wheel differently, what if I'd hit the brakes differently, what if, what if, what if. I know there's no point in doing that, and that nothing likely would've changed the accident's outcome because it all happened so fast -- but I still can't help myself and it's making me crazy. I even pulled out one of the boxes of spare parts I had in the basement and sat in the living room this morning, and cried my eyes out all over again while coddling a MAF and door sill.

I've just been sitting here in my house all day, waiting for a phone call about a rental car. B did leave me his Lexus to drive to campus for classes today .. but the roads here are still coated with ice and snow, and I'm just too scared to drive it. I don't think I could deal with it, if something happened to B's car while I was the one behind the wheel.

Before I had my msp, I had a honda civic and I wrecked it real bad In a snow storm in North Carolina. I was leaving NC and heading back home to Va. I lost control of the car in the snow and slamed into a gaurd rail. I ended up driving the beat up car a few miles to a hotel and stayed there for the night. I went through the whole looking out the window thing too, only to find that the car was a mess. I laid in the bed thinking about how I could of avoided it or maybe if I was a better driver would it had happened, so I know how you feel, but in the end the car is just object and the thing that matters most is that you are ok. To this day I can stand to drive in snow, but I did become a better driver and a parnoid one too(boom03)

dang! you had one of my favorite cars on here!

I know the feeling though. I still think back to my accident with my silver MSP and wonder if things could have gone differently if i would have done something else. but hopefully your insurance will cover the cost (unlike mine since i didnt have full coverage).. good luck!

Give me a holler if you need someone to drive you down to pick up your pop's Protege (as long as it's not a 20+ hour drive lol). If you need a boost fix & when it gets warmer, you can take my MSM out for a spin.

^^ The offer is very much appreciated, Phu' .. buuuut ..

After yet another day without the rental car company pulling through, my dad called and told me he would drive his Protege from Philly to my house, with my mom following in her van so they could return together to Philly in that. They just left my house, and his Protege is sitting in my driveway. :)

Getting into it was .. depressing. It's the same but completely different. There were no gauges flashing in my face, and I almost put my foot through the floor depressing the clutch because it feels like mush compared to my MSP's. Even the brakes are noticeably sloppier. All those 'little' things that really jumped out and slapped me in the face.

I guess I'll get used to it, though. And really, I have no room to complain about ANYTHING. I'm just incredibly lucky to have parents that would do something like this for me .. The fact that my dad is just GIVING me his car is fantastic enough, nevermind that he drove over three hours to personally deliver it.

On a final note -- I called up and told the rental car company, "Hey, thanks for nothing, cancel my reservation!" Enterprise FTL.

Glad to hear you are ok. I am a voulnteer firefighter and i have seen some major crashes. Your car is not that bad and hope they will fix it so we can have another speed on the road. Good luck

...it's totaled...

p.s. rush your parents are awesome.

my thoughts exactaly, i went a week and a half before they got me a car plus i had to pay more money up front cuz the insurance company paid for one car but the car i got was a highr class car(a ****** matrix how much lower can you go) and just been a pain in the ass calling me saying i need to give the car back soon cuz i had it for longer then the insurance company said,i still dont got my msp but i need to return it so (fuoops) enterprise haha sorry for my rant, but that is awesome your parents would do that for you, i wish you the best of luck in everything

Buy your car back and part it out. If you have the time, tools, and space this is the best way to go an a car with a lot of aftermarket stuff. I parted out my salvage turbo Protege5, made a ton more money than it cost me to buy it back and I didn't even sell the coilovers or the motor/trans. I'm curious to know how much they will charge you to buy it back. My Protege5 was pretty cheap, but it was pretty barebones inside since I raced it a lot. That brought the value down. I've still got half the bare chassis sitting outside my garage waiting to go to the scrap steel yard, but I don't get too depressed about it even though I loved my car. Financing an '99 M3 with the insurance money made me forget about my loss a little quicker.

Let me see what kind of deals I can find on a msp... but figure roughly 6k or so for a lower mileage one.

Dude, if everything would not have happened with my car the way that it did, and I still had it, I would have sold it to Cindy for that much.

no!!! sucks. glad to hear you're okay. ur RIP pix look similar to mine in the front end

Sorry to hear about your car Rush. Yours was one of my favorites. My .02 is to save all the parts from your car that you can, then do a buildup on your new protege when you have the time and money. Good luck glad to hear that you are ok :)

First of all...Obviously the fact you're STILL ALIVE is the most important thing but MAN...What a bummer...No doubt...Your MSP was well known, respected and loved on these forums.

Even without a MSP or even a Mazda at this point...You are still one of our most well liked and appreciated Members and one of our best Moderators...Although we may have additional MSP Moderators come and go...You'll always be our MSP Moderator! :D

Can't wait to see what your next ride will be...Take care, Rush!

sorry about the news rush and i'm glad your alright. i'm sure you realize it could have been a lot worse, those plows we have up here are no joke, and sometimes are oblivious to other drivers. msp's are fewer and fewer now adays. i'm glad your parents were able to help you out, awesome job by your dad.

if you're still considering another msp, i'm selling mine, and would definitely like it to stay in the msp community. it's a sunlight silver 2003.5 with 84k on the clock. Custom MSP smic, atp wastegate, corksport power series exhaust with the corksport motor mount inserts, joeP fpr, and ground control coilovers. i'm in danbury, ct, not too far from you, if you ever want to meet up or take a look.

only pic i have at work now, pm me and i'll send more when i get home.

Hey cindy if you buy your car back and consider parting it out, maybe you could set up like a "pick-and-pull" type of deal. It sounds like there are enough people in the immediate area? That way you could save yourself a little work. I don't know, it's just a thought. Or maybe not just one, but if a bunch of us got together sometime and swapped a lot of stuff from the MSP to the ES.....we could make some pretty extreme progress in a single day. I'm pretty good with brakes, suspension, interior and intermediate engine stuff. I saw dstmsp03 said he could do a motor-swap in 4 hours for you.....Anyone on here do paint and body??
