Resetting my power lock remote costs $108 ??!!

I've got an '03 Protege 5, and one of my two original power lock remotes stopped working. I take it into the local Mazda stealership, and the parts 'n service wench tells me it costs $108 to reprogram it.

Anyone know of a way for me to reprogram it myself? Or a way to get it done for cheaper? That's a crazy amount of money to do something like that. (eek2)

That's stupid crazy greedy bulls***. You can buy new ones off ebay for 20.00 shipped & the beauty part is that you can program it yourself. Lemme see if the how-to is still around. It's simple, just don't remember how off the top of my head. Been years since I programmed an extra one...............Does it just need a new battery? I don't recall if it was replaceable.

Yeah, I was thinking on just buying another one, but I wanted to post up here first before I went that route.

Man, if you still have the how-to laying around somewhere, I'd be eternally grateful.

And i've tried to replace the battery with a new one, didn't work.

There's a tutorial somewhere with a diagram. I found it a long time ago in the HOw To Section.

Make sure there are no keys in the ignition and that all doors are closed
2. Open driver's side door
3. Insert key into ignition switch and cycle the key between the ON and LOCK positions 3 times
4. Remove key from ignition switch
5. Push the driver's side door sensor switch 3 times
6. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock.
If nothing happens, wait 40 seconds and start from step 3 again
7. Press any button on any transmitter twice
8. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
9. If you have only 1 remote, press any button on that remote twice.
If you have 2 or 3 remotes, press any button on any of the other remotes twice.
10. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
11. If you have 1 or 2 remotes, press any button on either remote twice.
If you have 3 remotes, press any button on the 3rd remote twice.
12. Verify that the doors lock and then unlock
If nothing happens, see note A
13. The codes should now be reprogrammed

Note A:
1. Hold down the driver's side door sensor switch
2. Verify that the doors lock and unlock twice
3. Start from step 3 again

It's really simple to do. If my memory is good you have to :

With the driver side door opened, put the in the ignition and turn it all the way (don't start the car !) and take it back and out.

Repeat 2 times (3 times total)

After, with the key out of ignition, you press the light switch in your door 3 times (the switch that shuts the lights off when you close the door, its rubber black and located on the bottom of the center pillar...its hard to explain!)

Now the car is gonna go crazy and start locking and unlocking the doors endlessly. You press the buttons on your remote (i dont remember wich one, i used to press them all one after the other) and when the car stops locking/unlocking, your remote should be set !

Not even worth 10$ ... Even less a 108$ !!!!

Ahh OK, someone hooked ya up while I went to the park with the wife & dog I see. Looked it up in the manual under body-security/locks-keyless control module ID change. Yep, that's why I didn't remember it all but it does work. Enjoy the savings. Fight dealership gouging & sensless unnecessary expense every chance possible FTW.

That's it...I just did it the other day. $108. Wow, that's pretty ballsy of the service advisor to try and pull something like that. 2 hrs labor? lol.

i programmed mine myself took 15 secs ....and mazda wanted $130 for a new remote and to program it (even after i worked there as a detailer) haha geh

I did it for my stepson's RX-8 'mote. Saved crazee $$ over the stealership! Take your time. It may take more than one try.

I've got a Mitsubishi Montero Sport LS(wife's) remote with the same issue....same fix, I'd assume?

hope you got this fixed. I lost my keyfob. dealership wanted $70 for the fob and $45 to program it.

Thanks to some help on the forum, bought one off ebay for $13 and will program myself.
