replacing o2 sensor

There are only 2 sensors on the exhaust manifold. They have different wire lengths, if you've got 2 new sensors that don't require them to be spliced, simply remove 1, replace with same length wire senor and tighten fairly hard(the equivalent of 30-35ft/lbs). Repeat for second wire. Size is 22mm iirc.

^^ false, upstream does oxyten:fuel ratios, downstream is emissions only

what? What's that got to do with *anything* on how to replace an O2 (boom02)

So just get a new sensor, unscrew old one then screw in new one?
You can buy 2 kinds of aftermarket sensors, 1 that's a universal in which it comes with a kit to splice the wires to the OEM style connector (still easy to do, color coded wires and instructions come with most) or a full OEM replacement, with a new connector already attached, in which case yes, it's remove and replace. The difference is usually $100, performance is the same.

Downstream woud mean it's the O2 *after* the catalytic converter, so it's the one furthest down the exhaust manifold incase you were wondering which it was.

He means that unless you have a CEL for a rear O2 sensor or your catalytic converter, replacing your rear O2 sensor isn't gonna help anything. It's the front one that controls your air/fuel ratios, and is the only one that you should consider replacing on the basis of age.

I'm just wondering how you get *all* of this out of this:

I need to replace both o2 sensors in my wife's protege5. Is there a video or diagram anywhere showing how this is done?

btw its the downstream one if that matters

He's not asking to troubleshoot, just how to replace. The fact that he knows it's the downstream one (and using the correct term) but not how to replace it probably means someone scanned the car's MIL and told him the downstream O2 was fried

I realize that - but, if he's like 90% of newcomers that I've seen on this forum, he hears that changing your old O2 sensor is good for gas mileage, and either wants to change them both (or maybe his front one has already been replaced, and he just wants to change the back one).

I'm saying this to try and save him money if possible (he never said why he needed to replace it). You better learn that on this forum, you're going to get troubleshooting advice (especially from me), even if you're not asking for it.

4)flame
5)flame..
12) here's how you replace it linky

didnt mean to start something. The check engine light came on, had it checked and it said to replace the o2 sensor. Now the car is acting funny. It hesitates when you press the gas a little before it goes. Was thinking that may be the problem.

What was the CEL code?

not sure my wife said she had it checked and it came back to replace the downstream o2 sensor.

Was this a mechanic that told you to replace the O2 sensor, or some goon at an auto parts store with a code reader?

I want to help you make sure that you are replacing the right component. If you want further help, please post the CEL code on here.

i would suspect that to be the upstream, i had the same problem with mine, but it was due to faulty upstream crappy bosch universal. i didnt get cel though until it got real bad.

like stated, try and get the code from autozone or something. they might not tell you exactly what it is, the guy who did mine when i got cel for it just said "its an o2 sensor" me: "well which one" guy "i dont know the machine doesnt tell me that" end of conversation.

but it seems that the cel could possibly be from the misfires if its a bad upstream? correct me if im wrong

There's no way that an OBDII code reader can tell you that it's an O2 sensor code without giving you the code number. You should've called that guy on his BS right then and there.

i was going to but i was doubting myself lol. i figured it out anyway. the bad universal < stock ftw
