recommended conservative mod checklist

I am looking for someone to recommend a recommended mod list, in order from first to last. I have about 750 miles on my vehicle so any day now I should be starting up the modding fun... (nana)

looking for conservative recommendations, meaning no crazy powerful mods such as turbo upgrades....... but rather stuff that will keep the car nice looking and under the radar persay.

Here's what I'm thinking for starters..:

1) Replace interior lighting w/ LEDs (maybe a bright white, basically a mini-HID hehe).

2) window tinting

3) cold air intake,,, or motor mounts,, or something totally different......?

thx!

testpipe, springs, independent fog light mod, HID's if you have a Sport

buy and intake, rear mm(cpe) trz trans mount, bpv, shifter bushings and a testpipe. will give you very good results and will be happy with the outcome.

Still get the dashhawk. It's a very good thing to know what the car is doing before you start a lot of modding .

interesting recommendations,,,

hey, teach me something please,, the BPV I'm guessing is a bypass valve. Is that any different from a BOV (blow-off valve?).

I don't know anything mechanical but am trying to learn. so yeah, I probably will look into the dashhawk.

thx

TWM (or any other brand - they're all the same) shifter bushings and CS Inserts.

Blow off valves take the air pressure and vent it outside of the motor completely when the throttle body closes.

Bypass Valves take the air pressure and vent it back to the intake track maintaining the already calculated air/fuel ratio.

I see it a bit differently, but everyone has unique preferences.

This is the fourth turbo car for me. I've mildly modded them all. My take on this is that if you are modding for appearance, then it's just a matter of your own individual taste.

But if you are modding for performance, want to stay stock looking and more of a "sleeper" with substantially better performance, consider this:

1. A good CAI intake, rather than a SRI -- spend a bit more, but get true cold air from the left front fenderwell.

2. A 3 inch downpipe and race pipe to replace the highly restrictive stock downpipe and those two crappy cats. Connect to the stock CBE -- you will not see power gains with aftermarket CBE's unless you go to a bigger turbo. If you don't have state emission checks, go catless. You probably will get a check engine light. Get it read at Autozone to confirm that it is due to being catless and live with it. There are some ways to minimize or possibly eliminate it.

3. If you do both of the above, go one step colder on your spark plugs. No benefit from this unless you've done #1 and #2.

4. Stay with your stock BPV for starters. Most of the BOV crowd are interested in the sounds they make rather than performance. If you go BOV, for gosh sakes, do not run it VTA, as you are just screwing up the air to fuel ratio and costing you power. Our MAF controlled ECU needs the released boost air to be recirculated back into the intake.

5. Invest in some sort of tuning device so you can see where you are going with your mods. Many here like the Dash Hawk, and it will identify your CEL's and clear them, as well as give you accurate data logging for improved engine performance or whether you are running into any problems. I like that, but I now get more benefit from onboard data collected by an accelerometer during WOT runs -- GTech Pro RR. It tells me a lot about real world performance where the tires meet the road without having to spend a lot of time and money on dyno pull or waiting in line at the dragstrip.

FWIW, this is what i did to my car, in order of appearance. keep in mind it's my DD and has to be utterly reliable, so i'm definitely on the conservative side of the equation. also i'm not into cosmetic mods at all, & only do things that improve the driving feel & performance:

1. dump the factory oil & start the patient on a full synth diet.

2. CAI - all kinds of flavors, i went w/ Injen, no probs, good gains, reasonably cheap, available now w/o wait.

3. motor mounts - you'll get plenty of good advice, but do consider the cheap & effective corksport inserts.

4. shifter bushings. if that doesn't improve the shifter feel, change the tranny fluid to Redline MT90. if that still doesn't provide smoother shifts invest in a short shifter + remove counterweight.

5. see if the stock bpv leaks, if so consider Forge or a self-adjusting bpv [rkm 2nd gen is getting good reviews]

hope this helps! you're definitely going to get more advice than you probably bargained for, we're all MS3 nuts & looooove to share our wealth of expertise....(direct)

Doesn't forge bpv give the woosh sound that it gets annoying after awhile?

the Forge's most annoying feature [to some] seems to be a clanging/pinging sound. it has been variously described as 2 ball-peen hammers colliding or, as one scribe famously put it "the sound of God sucking up the ocean through a straw, followed by a hamster sneeze" or words to that effect.

some ppl can't stand the clanging, some love it. some start out by loving it, followed by a desperately introspective period of 'what the hell was i thinking when i bought this?' it is definitely a unique sound, and you'll get many a stare from the drivers next to you. plenty of sound clips/vids on youtube. happy motoring! (drive)

If you haven't done anything as far as power mods, everyone will tell you to start with an intake. My personal choise is CorkSport Intake/Turbo inlet pipe combo. It's the best bang for your buck, you get in intake and a turbo inlet for the same price as people drop on just an intake. After that you can get a DashHawk or a BOV/BPV, dashhawk to monitor your boost levels and much much more, and a bov/bpv to make sure you're holding correct boost preasure. Once I swapped out stock intake and inlet pipe for CorkSport, the crappy stock bpv couldn't hold boost all the way.

wow all these mods are thoroughly confusing, as there seem to be a lot of unique recommendations. for instance, not everyone is saying buy brand x CAI, brand y downpipe, etc,,,, but rather there are a whole lot of unique opinions. good stuff.

cool description. one question, does the BPV still make the whoosh sound just like a BOV? not positive if that is possible since the air continues to circulate under the hood rather than being jettisoned out. because yes that sound does rock. :)

Yes, even with the factory BPV you can still hear the beloved sound only with an addition of a short ram intake or a cold air intake. Turbosmart makes a dual port BOV/BPV which can either operate at full vent to atmosphere (BOV) or full recirculate (BPV). Also you can further fine tune it to your liking. If you are afraid of voiding your warranty, I'd recommend mods that can be easily taken off for dealer visits - SRI/CAI + Turbo Inlet + BPV + Dashhawk. But if you don't really care about your warranty then you can take the "milder" route - SRI/CAI + BPV + Downpipe + TP/RP + FMIC. You can also ask the dealer what mods can be done without voiding your warranty, welcome to the MS3 family!

You can also ask the dealer what mods can be done without voiding your warranty, welcome to the MS3 family!

And there's the key. Talk to your dealer's service writers or service manager. Ask them about modifying the vehicle. Some dealers are more lenient than others. And all are subject to scrutiny from Mazda USA, so they have to play by the rules or risk not getting paid.

I have been doing a lot of searching on the forums to see what sorts of mods people are doing, and I'm thinking my mod list will be something like this, once I decide to start...

I already have a Dashhawk. Simply because the original tires will likely wear out before I decide to start modding, lightweight wheels & stickier tires will likely be first on the list. Next, I'd like to add a CAI, turbo inlet hose & BPV upgrade. After that, I want to improve handling, and may save up for a set of coilovers. If I'm still feeling the mod bug at that point, I'd say DP and intercooler upgrades would be next. After that, maybe a big brake kit. Maybe.

THINKING ABOUT THE FORGE BPV....+PG TURBO INLET....

IS IT WORTH IT NOW TO GET A BPV?--FOR MORE CONSISTENT PERFORMANCE?

I LIVE WHERE THERE EMISSION STANDARDS SO NO TEST PIPES OR CATLESS PIPES FOR ME(laugh)
