question: is overdrive on or off ?

wtf are you talking about? i have posted 2342341234123 things confirming that there arent over drive gears in manuals, they have overdriven ratios. it is completely different. i never said we didnt have gears with overdriven ratios, i said we didnt have "overdrive" as it were that he is talking about. our ratios are a constant, they will never change, there is no button, there are no gear sets that move into place. it is a ratio built into the transmission for cruising, and to lower the final drive to improve gasmileage.

Your too slow to understand this and its funny, even when they sell the car its listed as a 5spd with overdrive, Your the only persone I know of who thinks the overdrive gear isnt called a overdrive gear.

I geuss Mazda is Lying when they call it a 5spd with overdrive huh!
 
overdrive is a set of planetary gears that acts a 4th, or cruising gear in automatics. When the button is active, the gears, similar to an lsd, are lowered onto the appropriate teeth and then act as an additional gear

overdriven gear is different than an overdrive. i remember watching trucks one time and they had a 3 speed auto tranny and behind it they were putting an overdrive box that they could engage or disengage, which effectively made the transmission like a 6 speed because it could be engaged or disengaged in each of the 3 gears in the tranny. an overdrive in an auto is a separate thing. in a manual transmission you have a gear whose ratio is overdriven. their overall goal is the same, to reduce the ration to less than 1:1, but how they are accomplished and the point of the button on an auto is totally different (remember what the thread was about?)

no, it is not an overdrive gear. it is a regular gear with an overdriven ratio. it's the same as any of the other 4 gears, just a different size to create an overdriven ratio.
 
Nobody is debating the 2 work in diferent, However they are acheving the same thing, overdrive.

Duh! they dont work the same, but they both are overdrive because the drive shaft turns faster than the engines crankshaft in both cases.

What you fail to realize is that this is a LIST of Acceptable definitions for Overdrive

the point is that an overdrive is a separate entity not found in manual transmissions. it is an actual thing. manual transmissions do not have this thing called an overdrive, which is why there is no overdrive button on a manual
 
NO ONE calls 5th gear the overdrive gear. Start a damn poll if you dont belive me,
Its 5th.

Can you honeslty say you would drive down the road in forth and say "WOW i need to shift to overdrive." How cool does that sound. It wouldnt everyone would look at you like your a tool.

There is no overdrive button on a Manual because YOU HAVE TO MANUALLY SHIFT THE GEARS, HENCE MANUAL!!!! DUH!!!!

Overdrive is an accepted term for the overderive gear in a manual!!!!!

Weather its used by folks over here is irrelevant.
