i have noticed for some time not when i try to put it in reverse it won't! even if i put in 1st then in reverse i haft to do it like 3 or 4 time then it will go does this have any thing to do with the problem in shifting fast?

i got the same problem. sometimes from a standstill it wont go in 1st or Reverse. i have to go in 2nd and roll a hair then go in reverse. I told my dealer and he said it is a lockout syncro.

i have a problem sometimes when i try and put it in reverse trying to back out of a parking spot...i just lift up on the clutch a lil bit and it shifts right into gear..but i think i have the same prob as you guys...hope whutever it is doesnt get to bad

Have any of you ever driven a car before? Even porsche's have that problem. Its just the gearing not lining up on a reverse gear. You put it in first and then back or let the car roll even a tiny amount and it goes in. The teeth are touching... its very common and happens in alot of cars.

Its not a problem... its not even a consideration.

Hmm. Interesting to hear the problem is in other cars. I never had the problem in the civic I used to drive, or the Suburban (old urby, when they were still trucks).

And I have not had the problem in the 911's I have driven, either.

I do have this problem in the p5, however. I thought the reverse was in fact synchroed. That is, the "reversing" gear itself is not, but the forward gear that it uses is. I was considering taking it in to the stealership for this issue.

There are only a few vehicles with forward and reverse synchronized gears. Most of them are Dodge trucks with manual transmissions and Audi's. It's pretty cool because you can pop the shifter in reverse while the car is still rolling forward without any grinding.

In our cars, like most other manual transmission cars, the forward gears are the only synchronized gears. We can pop our shifter into 1st gear while rolling backwards, but we can't do the opposite. This is also why the shifter can be tricky at times to get into reverse. All you have to do is either move it to first and then back to reverse. Or just blip the gas pedal before moving it into reverse.

Yep. A quick jaunt over to 1st does it 95% of the time, or I just start the shift to reverse and nick the accelerator, keeping mindful of the shifter the whole time. No grind yet.

OK here's a trick I use when that happens. Try to put it in reverse and if it doesn't happen give a little tap on the gas while you apply a little pressure to the gear going into reverse. It will go in. Do the same for first. Both these after you are at a complete stop and it still won't go into gear.
