Nick.... how would i kick my ecu into open loop if im not boosted??

i dont generate boost so how would i be able to tune withougt boost...

0 vac. As soon as it reaches 0 vacuum you may switch to open loop.

"may" is the key word. WOT on some protege ECU's does not mean that it will go into open loop. Gear or "demand" Load along with rpm will designate the transition into open loop. The MSP has different drive cycles.

I understand that load is load, but the programming of each of the 3 ECU's is different, which makes them change to open loop at different times and conditions...and each ECU does not do it the same each time...I was just wondering what sensors the tuner is intercepting, and what it is doing to make the mode switch...In stock form not just one sensor is creating the switch...The car will run in closed loop in most cases to almost 4,000 rpm at WOT before switching to open loop...and at WOT the TPS sensor is maxed out...So it has to take input from the MAF as well (You can also hit open loop while at partial throttle)...Are you manipulating both of these?...Or does only the MAF reading determine the switch?

We are looking for boost load. When we see boost load we kick it into open loop mode. It can happen at WOT first gear or it can be part throttle four gear, it does not matter to us. When you hit boost load it will changed over. You can tune it yourself for your car. You have to take into account more then just the cars ECU. You also have to take into account what turbo, what size intercooler, MAF size and intercooler tubing. This is why boost load is the most important thing when tuning a turbo car.

Thanks again

In stock form the Protege may not switch over at 0 vacuum. THis is why we read the boost load and then adjust for ourself when we hit boost load.

Thanks again

With your car we would read engine load and AFR. Then at that point we can adjust when you make the switch into open loop type mode. It is not much of a problem at all. With the MPI Tuner you can read four load inputs and adjust as needed.

Thanks again

The part in bold. That is what Installshield wants to know (and me, and many others). We already know you use boost to sense when to do it. But HOW do you "kick it into open loop mode"? If you don't want to tell us because its a trade secret, just say it! :D

Either way, it looks like you've finally got a pretty solid setup with the MPI tuner. When I go turbo, I want stock MAF and NO extra injectors, so I'm liking what I see here! Good work.

I don't believe his going to give that away...but i think it has to do w/ engine temp..throttle positioning...But please don't quote me!

And yes..I am running a stock MAF & NO EXTRA INJECTORS!

acidbbg

what EGT are you reading when boosting?

8psi may be the limit on the stock fuel pressure and injectors.

@9psi, I have mine maxed, temps go high.

I would like to see what kind of WB reading Acidbbg gets with his setup..

Thanks Chris, that was exactly what I was getting at...and I figured it wouldn't get answered, but if it is something he does not want to give away he should mention that...

I am not going to start throwing s*** about this, I have learned to live with those types of replies...BUT please men, make sure you yourself are given this information before you drop over half a grand for this tuner...If MPNick wants you to sign a waver or something, making it illegal for you to reproduce the specifics of it that is fine...just as long as the end user knows exactly how this thing works...that is BY FAR the most important part...

I don't have the cash yet for any of these ECU upgrades, piggy's or standalones...I am just trying to get as much info as possible out of this system, so potential buyers are not misinformed...So if any of my posts seem to be pesimistic, or always seem to raise the BS flag on MPNick...I apologize...That is not the intention, it is simply that the people that are investing the money on this system NEED to know every single thing about every aspect of it...

so someone that owns one, let us know that you were given tons upon tons of info on it from MPNick...IMO MPNick attempts to create an illusion that he has no competition in this market, and he very much so does...The absolute best and most successfull ECU related parts manufacturers will always lay down the strengths and weaknesses of the system...Every one of them has both for the most part...and they will even recommend other brands that may fit your application better...I understand that at this point, available upgrades are a little hard to come by...but MPNick should at the very least show how this tuner sums up to that of Link, Haltech, Motec, Apex'i, Greddy, or others...It may have huge advantages, and it most likely will have some disadvantages too...potential buyers need to be informed of this...

I highly agree with everything in this post, nice wording installshield:D. English major???

ha, thanks man...No way though, I suck at English for the most part...or were you being sarcastic? ;)...I probably mispelled s***, used too many commas, and had huge run on sentences like my norm...

(lol) Well I was being serious, I thought it was good stuff. I agree that the owners/users of this or any piggyback should know exactly what is being done to the car.

yeah man...MPNick so far has not proven to me that he is giving the buyers of his product every piece of info they truely need...The tricky part is that in some cases the buyer him/herself does not really realize that this info would be invaluable for making the purchasing decision in the first place...Maybe MPNick is doing this already...but from pretty much every owner of the MPI tuner I have contacted, none of them could answer the same questions i am asking MPNick...So what does that mean? Some of the dudes were unaware of the different versions, or boxes, or programming additions or "modules" that are being added to this system (at least that is what appears to be being added, and there are posts all over the place like "do I have the newest version?")...That is what angers me...We do have a growing aftermarket still...and with that we now have multiple brands and makers of a similar product...Without knowing all the little details about each brands product, you CANNOT make a decent and logical decision for your car...So again guys, squeeze every possible piece of evidence and info out of these ECU upgrades BEFORE you buy it, even if it is seemingly meaningless info to you at the time...In the end it will always help you...it may turn out that this thing is doing very close to what MPNick claimed all along...i just want proof of that through data and specs, or at least for the buyers to have that proof before or during the purchase...

This all sounds very familiar. I finally decided to just let it go and not worry about it.

I have never been able to get a complete answer from MPNick regarding how his tuner does what it does.

That's fine, as now I know not to buy the MPI Tuner. But he wouldn't say what or how it does what it does, but he wouldn't say that he would not give details neither.

That was just my experience though. I undertsnad if he doesn't want to reveal his black box secrets, but at least say so.

He has told me everything I ever wanted to know about it. He calls with any updates and is extremely helpful. He will explain it to you if you speak to him and he has time. I can understand him not explaining in detail EVERYTHING that people want on this forum because of the stuff that went on before. I'm pretty sure that the people that got the unit from him have the answers they wanted.

I don't think he is trying to give you the run around. He's just not the type of person to write a book about what his unit does. But he will talk your ear off with answers to questions. Some people are good on a keyboard and others are better in person, that's all.

Thats all fine and dandy Big Timm...So can you answer these ongoing questions?...How does the MPI Tuner "kick" the stock ECU into open loop? Why did he initially say that he had no problems running a high load closed loop app without a WBO2? Why are there all kinds of different boxes or versions as well as "modules" coming out, but inherantly do the same thing as the initial version? Why did MPNick create a post in this thread that says "open loop "type" mode"? What is open loop "type" mode?...What is this issue with MPNick claiming that there are absolutely no stock ECU "relearning" problems with his system, even though Paul had some, and then MPNick's reply about "the problem has always been adding fuel in open loop and keeping it after several drive cycles...and finally what are some potential weaknesses of the system...there HAS to be some...

Maybe you need to talk to MPNick about his online problems..he seemingly has plenty of time to come on here and post, but not with answers to these questions...If he wants to sell more of these systems, and make himself and his company more money...these questions need answered, as well as others...this is nothing personal, and I am not trying to twist his words or do anything devious...I just feel that anyone interested would like to know this too...If he wants each of the people who are looking for this info to call him and talk to him personally, that would take over a week of nonstop phone calls...

I promise I will shut up once this info is available for potential buyers...If it is and he does not want if for public viewing, please pm the info to me or something...In the end my only attempt is to try and prevent any "EBay" like claims about a very expensive product being thrown around on this board...Most of the dudes on here do not have the cash for a poor investment...and I am not saying this is one, I just don't see enough credible info for anyone who is serious about their car to make an accurate decision on which upgrade to purchase...

Can you pm his number or something so I can talk to him?

No dude I can't answer all that. I don't have any hard proof that it works. There is a lot that I guess I don't know, but I have the answers coming for what I have questions about. I was just trying to say that he does explain things when you talk to him. He has explained a lot to me, but I am not going to say anything he has told me if he hasn't posted it yet because it's not my place to do so.

When I get my new clutch and WB I will post the A/F ratio's at differnet loads and weather or not I have to tune it often. I will try to give as much info as I can without over stepping the boundries. I haven't done anything with my car for about a month or so because of the clutch and the holidays, so I don't have anything to add to the tuning part.

ok man...It is fine if you can't answer those questions...I am not targeting you at all...

Maybe I am biasing everyone's purchasing habits towards my own...I won't buy anything for a car unless I know exactly how it works and what it does...Some people may not go about it that way, and just leave a system such as this as a "I don't know what it does, but my car runs great" type of mod...If you are happy with it, then MPNick was successful...so I apologize, if you like it and it is not causing issues that is great...

So I guess possibly I am attempting to help MPNicks sales...I know a lot of guys view these types of mods the same way I do...If guys like me had all the info they could ever dream of right in front of them, he wouldn't be able to keep up with the demand...most likely my biggest fear is that MPNick does not know the answer to some of these questions, and popping out bogus claims that are really going cause some guys a lot of money in the future...Thats bad, and any attempt any of us can do to prevent that is good...Damn it, I would really just like those questions answered by him...do you have a number I can reach him at?

That's cool! I got the info I needed at the time and continue to get more as new things develop. I can assure you that he does know his s*** about these boxes and the ECU's.
