For the first time in 3 years got pulled over for having YELLOW neon lights on my car but he wrote a ticket for unsafe equipment (uhm)

I asked him what statute says i can't have yellow lights and he said 316.610 which according to the florida senate site is unsafe equipment statute and not for the neons (jerkit)

http://www.flsenate.gov/Statutes/index.cfm?mode=View%20Statutes&SubMenu=1&App_mode=Display_Statute&Search_String=&URL=CH0316/Sec610.HTM

what a moron, i am going down to the station in the morning to file a complaint :D

it could be the yellow neons resemble the orange wanring lights used my semi's, tow trucks etc and that its unsafe in the fact that it could mislead traffic.

sucks you got a ticket, but I can't say neons tickle my fancy anymore.

it is a rice ticket. they were pulling civics, neons and lancers left and right down 1 mile stretch after a local hangout. i wasn't there i was just driving to wallmart for a jack which happens to be there.

btw, yellow is not illegal at all. you cant have red facing the front and you can't have blue period. everything else is fair game.

i was thinking of either getting a red or yellow glow, but never say a yellowp5 with one on..do you have any pictures of your car with it on? sorry to jack this thread

i'll take some pics of the neons. hopefully it will com out. btw, mine are not pure yellow but have a green tint to them.

pics

few pics that auzzie wanted. doesn't come out that well on pictures. these are the best.

yeah, its hard to get the color right. it does have a green tint to it. at first i wasn't sure about it because i wanted yellow but it does look great in person. i never had anyone tell me they don't like it.

Let me explain the ticket for you.

MOST Neons are made of pure glass, and not a "break proof" glass. The plain ol glass neons when turned on, get hot, and if you are driving down the road with them on they can break, from something flying up and hitting them....OR vibration. Thus leaving broken glass on the ground. That is what would be considered "unsafe equipment"

I honestly think you can get out of it as long as your neons are the tough as nails plexyglass, won't break cause they can't kind of neons....if you know what I mean. If you can take it to court and prove they are the safe kind, and are very break resistance they may drop it..................HOWEVER!!!

Under almost every state law there is a general rule that applies. The ONLY color of light that can be on a vehicle while it is in motion, is white(the front), red and orange for the rear...and white in the rear when going in reverse.

By having yellow lights on your car while driving down the road that can be considered unsafe, because it can be a distraction to other drivers. Since people like to rubberneck, they may cause an accident because they are paying attention to your lights rather than the road. That too is another interpetion of the "unsafe equipment" law, at least in any state I have been in....

p.s. I am not a lawyer, this is just my interpetation of the "unsafe equipment " law I have from experience with law enforcement.

excuse the typo's

Good luck!

very good post. my neons are in thick plexiglass tubes (you can drive over them and they won't crack). plus the laws are vague. no where does it say that you can't have yellow lights or neons.

plus if the neons distruct people then so do the mcdonalds signs and billboards on the side of the road, you know what i mean :)

Yes, and if you were to drive one of those signs or billboards down the road - they would also likely give you a ticket.

Dumbass!

I say fight it. Make the cop come into court and explain why they are unsafe. Bring a tube with you and demonstrate how unbreakable they are. Do a little research and find out the number of the statute that says you can only have certain color lights on your car and then ask them (the cop) why they didn't write you a ticket under that law. I've found that if you present a decent case, rather than just show up, the judges tend to treat you favorable. Good luck.

thats what it is here in texas as well, as long as you dont drive with your neons on you are alright...you can have them on when you are in a stoped posistion, but other than that they dont want it on while you are driving cause it could effect someone elses driving.

no problem. Good luck fighting it though, get a lawyer, dress nice - be respectful but know your rights and know the laws word for word.
