OBX Header with stock exhaust.. anyone tried?

has anyone tried this? I know many people say an axleback dosent really do anything for the ES 2.0, so I was thinking of doing just the header. If I really need to I might do the Racing beat exhaust, but I want to be as quiet as possible and try to free up the top end.

I'm assuming I should remove the intake manifold butterflies as well to attain the same goal.

I have a stock 2003 ES 2.0 as of today.

remove the vtcs(the butterflies) or get a 626 mani to install....and get rid of the stock airbox if you haven't already

Those are my mods. Stock exhaust. She pulls hard in the mid to high RPMs now. No obnoxious noise.

is it hard to remove the vtcs? and is it worth it? what kind of gains?

is it hard....no...time consuming yes....takes a lil over an hour to pull the mani the first time....

i suggest cleaning the mani before ya do it.....about 2 hour dip in degreaser

takes about an hour to remove the vtcs and fill the holes and if ya do the port and polish(you should while it's out) about 40 mins per runner or longer if you're maticulous....

and then about another hour to clean....

and then reinstall

i think it added back a lil bit of pep to it since it opens up the runners more, but that would be my butt dyno, one of my friends said he noticed a difference when he drove my car afterwards

i ran my header with the stock exhaust for a little while. its helped and made the engine sound a bit beefier. id say get the racing beat...it doesnt make the car obnoxious at all. i have that running with my header and stock midpipe and it sounds good. you cant really even tell you have an exhaust on the car from the inside which was my big concern. i got a video of what it sounds like with my setup.

my last protege5 I had a thunder header with a 100% stock other then that. It didn't change anything to the exhuast sound and made a noticable difference in power.

Would adding the header and leaving the balance of the exhaust system the same do anything positive for MPG? That is assuming that you keep your foot out of it.

you wont see any difference in your gas mileage or at least I didnt even with my foot in it.

Hey I know Im supposed to be in the 1.8L area.............but from what I understand pretty much anything external(maybe some internal stuff) can be put on the 1.8L engines......so I was wondering if anyone has experience with an obx header on a 1.8L with stock exhaust?? I had a self made catback system on for a couple years and eventually grew tired of all the noise and there really wasnt a power difference so I put my stocker stuff back on.

thanks for the video it sounds excellent. What is making the whistle sound? turbo?

the only thing i can think of thats making the whistling sound is my intake sucking in air and winding down when the rpms drop. i wish it had a turbo.

haha yeah prolly the rpms' winding down, everytime i hear my rpm's go down it reminds me of a police siren so i freak out and check all my mirrors, my friends are like wtf O_o

i'm currently running a Ractive header with full stock exhaust.

Doesn't sound too shabby, better than stock, but, not loud at all

I do agree though, do the above listed mods and a Racing Beat catback...i'm still lookin for one for mine

Woul dyou happen to have a video clip of your setup? did it give you god mid-rang power? Im looking to doing a header with my stock exhaust and Im hoping to boost my low&mid-range power.

headers will give you more mid-high end power

And, no, no video clip at the moment. I have one with the OBX and Magnaflow, and another with just the Magnaflow

Nothing just header-actually, i thiink there is a vid floating around of my car with JUST the header and stock midpiipe.....

why did you choose the ractive header instead of the obx header?
