OBD2 feels knock (physical rod bearing contact to rod journal) and spark detonation as the same. The computers automatically inclined to run rich to correct any lean situation which may be causing the pinging and retards timing so the car runs slower too.
How to change the rod bearings? remove upper and lower oil pans, theres 2 bolts on the upper aluminum oil pan on the side which is attached to the tranny which you cant get a socket onto without drilling a 5/8ths hole into the tranny bellhousing and then turning the flywheel until you can see the 2 bolts (ever wonder why theres 2 lines that run across the back of the flywheel?). Remove the pan then the con rods will be visible to you, I think the torque spec was 19 ft/lbs then 90degree turn--not sure double check this for sure. How would you know if you need to do it? most people say its impossible to really know and its sort of a last ditch effort to try and save your motor if its knocking, whats likely is that it is knocking at those bearings since they see the most abuse, or if you specifically remmeber why tehy may be knocking (me at the track...
