noise from windshield?

Mine just started up this morning, its been really cold out for the past couple days and I think thats why it started. I'm a little confused on the location of the "cowl", can somebody please post a picture as to what you are talking about?

I test drove a MS3 last night and the temps were at about 5 degree's and the car made that noise. How anoying!

The tape I used was made by 3m, it wasn't a problem with bunching up and you can't even tell its under the cowl. The cowl is the piece of plastic that the windshield wiper blade attach to.

i took mine completely off and cleaned it then used a 3m double sided emblem tape and reinstalled it..no more noise and its a complete repair of the problem i have seen electrical tape become very brittle in the past and didnt wanna deal with it..the cowl is only held on by the wipers 2 bolts then two screws and it just slides off

I'm glad I found this thread too. Rattles and creaks annoy me to no end and my MS3 is only 3 days old. It's pretty cold here and that thing is creaking like crazy. I was really, really hoping it was one of those "known issues"! :-)

RE: Dealer fixed

In response to my earlier post about the dealer fixing it... it lasted about a couple weeks and now the noise is back. I have a huge crack in my windshield (from living in the mountains) and am going to try the 3M tape when they replace the windshield. (sad1)

Same prob here (windshield rattle/creaking)...Printed out this thread and presented to the stealership. Prob fix...although it wasn't easy convincing them. Had it to them twice and they said they couldn't hear anything. "we never heard of this before"...famous last words.... I said I hear it every day when the temps are below 35F..."would you please put some sort of padding under the windsheid cowl so I don't have to keep coming back"..they did ...rattle gone...I

I've had the same problem as a lot of you guys on here, especially with colder temperatures lately. I stopped by the dealership after work and they were surprisingly helpful. The guy knew exactly what the issue was and I'm scheduled to have it "fixed" on Monday. I"ll let everyone know how it goes, hopefully it lasts longer than 2 weeks.

Problem fixed

Having the same problem with my MS3, I mentioned it to the dealer when I had an oil change done, about 3 weeks ago. They didn't do anyting back then and I was sure they forgot about it, but last week - surprise !!! I had a phone call from Parts Dept. telling me that my special order parts arrived and I should schedule an appointment. I did and they said they replaced some parts around windshield and that Mazda came out with a fix to the problem. The car is now rattle free.

So far I've been very happy with the dealer's service department.

I'm glad I stumbled on this thead. The creak is annoying and my car is only a month old. I will check this out tomorrow and let you know if this works for me.

It should work...

This is a well known issue and there is a TSB on it. My Mazda Mechanic also has an MS3 and knew how to fix it. He agreed that the creaking was a major PITA.

My 08 is totally tight now. I love how solid this car feels.

I had the car at the dealer to fix the glovebox and a loose piece of exterior trim. I told them about the creak in the windshiled and they fixed it. The work order said that they installed shims at the windshield. I think it worked. I drove it home and no creak.

For those who need to educate their service technicians, the Mazda tip for the rattle at the base of the windshield is MTOL-5636, which recommends replacement of the insulator pads on the cowl grill hooks (8 each of part L206-50-794). Since I live close to the dealer, and it was below zero weather, and it was free, I had them do it. No noise since...well, the sway bar bushings grown madly in the cold...but that is a different thread...

I went to the dealership, explained the rattle, and they blamed it on my A-Pillar boost gauge. Even though I told them this has been happening way before the gauge was installed.

Well, looks like I am back to fixing things myself again. Screw Stealerships.

Is your pillar painted? I would love to see it in person to decide if its where I want to mount my gauge.

Just took my car to the dealership Monday for the crackling noise coming from the windshield area (which was less noticeable with the warmer weather the last couple of days).

They said they are ordering some part (some kind of insulation?) that should be coming in today. Hope it works, if not, I'll be trying out what you guys mentioned!

Thanks for this thread! :)
