noise from windshield?

I've had the same problem as a lot of you guys on here, especially with colder temperatures lately. I stopped by the dealership after work and they were surprisingly helpful. The guy knew exactly what the issue was and I'm scheduled to have it "fixed" on Monday. I"ll let everyone know how it goes, hopefully it lasts longer than 2 weeks.

Can ask if anyone here knows what the serial number range(s) are for affected models? My dealer is trying to tell me that this TSB doesn't cover my car's VIN, yet my car exhibits this exact problem.

Just got this TSB done on my '08 and am happy to say the windshield rattle/creak is completely gone. It's been about week so far and no noise at all which is a godsend considering how annoying the sound was.

Mine started doing this this morning...I will be "FIXING" it this afternoon...

Mine's been doing this as well. Can anyone post pictures of the cowl so a total noob like myself can locate it?

I don't feel like driving 70 miles to the closest speed dealer to have something so simple done.

Someone mentioned that you don't actually have to remove the wipers. Is that true?

I'd suggest you take it in to the dealer as there are some shims they replace as opposed to just adding some tape and calling it a fix. I had this done quite a few months ago when it was still warm and now the night time temps have dropped to freezing and none of the windshield crackling noises have returned at all.

After suffering from this annoying rattle for about 2 weeks now, i finally decided to get this done. Taking it to the dealership for minor rattles just aggravates me cause 9 times out of 10 they " can not replicate the problem" and it just ends up being a waste of time. So i just did this fix myself in 30 minutes flat, taking my time. Took the cowl completely off, cleaned it, and removed the poor excuse for the bushings they had there. Instead i used some cork tape - it's pretty thick, and can be molded to whatever shape you need with your fingers. So i covered completely those eight pins that touch the windshield on the back, and put some on the bottom portion of the cowl, which also comes in contact with the windshield. Cowl felt kinda lose when i took it ff, but snug when i put it back on. Now I am off for a test drive to see if this worked :).

If you're somewhat competent doing handy work by yourself, I would not waste my time and oxygen bringing something like this to the dealer because I'm almost certain they will not fix it.

Does anyone have the link to the TSB? I know it's out there, but I've searched and cannot find it again.

any chance you took some pictures during the process? I've read a couple of posts that said the wipers were hard to take off...did you have any problems. I'd just assume fix this myself instead of heading to the dealer.

I am going to try this fix tomarrow afternoon, like a few others, I am not completely sure of what the "cowl" is. I will snap some pics and see what I can figure out.

As taken from an earlier post on page 3 of this thread:

For those who need to educate their service technicians, the Mazda tip for the rattle at the base of the windshield is MTOL-5636, which recommends replacement of the insulator pads on the cowl grill hooks (8 each of part L206-50-794).

And for those who just see no point in bringing it in to the dealer to get this fixed right the first time, I similarly don't see a point in having to shell out ANY money to fix something that is covered under warranty that can be taken care of during any regular scheduled service.

I took my car in on Friday, and it's out of its 12 month "Adjustment warranty period" that covers squeak & rattle fixes...

Eff dealers, now I have to fix it myself regardless.

I've never heard of that adjustment warranty bulls***. What a crock! Is this not bumper to bumper?

Much too lazy to take pictures, but it was much easier than i anticipated. Had no problems removing the vipers - don't pull too hard or when it comes off you may scratch your hood a bit... just sort of wiggle it up and down a bit and it will come off. Besides two screws that hold the cowl and vipers, the only other thing that needs to be disconnected is a water line which is very straight forward. For something small like this it's not worth the hustle of going to the dealer imho. (thumb)
