newbie question

I'm pretty new to the car modding scene. Can someone explain the tire numbers (ex:215/45/15) and offset to me? And besides the bolt pattern, what dictates whether or not a rim/tire combination will fit my car?

Lastly, I should note that I don't really want to lower my car because I plan to drive dirts roads and unmaintained streets with potholes (the kind that can rip out your oil pan if you're not careful or your car is too low).

Before you get flamed too much with the whole spiel about searching first and how this has been covered 19769437694376 times, I'll help you out. FYI - things like this have been covered and there are crabby people on here who will invariably yell at you for asking these kinds of questions without searching first. You won't have to take my word for it - you'll see soon enough.
