AWD Tire Replacement Question

Apologize if this has been answered already…I searched but didnt find the answer.
Got a flat and trying to decide whether I should replace all 4 or just the 2 rear. I have 20k miles on this set of 4 crossclimate2’s.
The tires have been rotated every 7500 miles so the wear should be pretty even across all 4 tires.

I went with replacing all four CC2 tires but most of the people would replace just two.

Depends on the wear, I'd say. But if as you describe you've got 60Kmi tread life warranty tires, with regular rotation and they've experienced ~20Kmi wear, I'd probably opt for just the pair of them, installed onto the 'standard' drive wheels.

Once had a pair of tires (on a full set of 4 of those tires) crap out after 5Kmi due to an alignment/bolt issue. Replaced just the pair, along with an alignment. Every other time, with regular rotation at ~4500-5000 miles, I've waited until the set began to exhibit reduced grip, at which point I would swap-in a new set of 4 tires.

If you have any sort of warranty on the tires I would check with the tire dealer, they may pro-rate replacement of all 4 tires.

First thought ... Is it repairable? If yes, just have it repaired.

I doubt Michelin is going to replace all 4 tires (prorated) for having a flat. It's worth checking with Michelin and your tire dealer if there is any road hazard protection involved.

If it came down to having to replace it, personally I would just replace the one. (Yes, I know it's all wheel drive)

So Costco did re-imburse me for 80% of the 1 tire cost. They recommended I replace all 4 but CC2’s were on backorder. I knew Bridgestone Weatherpeak were a decent alternative but I really like the CC2’s as I weather tested them already up in Tahoe. The tech did mention I had 8/32 left. So I bought a gauge and measured all 3 and they were all exactly 8/32. I found out that tirerack offers shaving service pre-shipping for $25 a tire so I ended up replacing just 1 shaved down to 8/32 for roughly about $350 including shaving and install. I do feel a lot better having a reasonably matching set of 4 as I always prefer to replace the entire set with regular rotation and alignment. It does seem a little counter-intuitive to pay extra for what is effectively a used tire but…I feel this was the best option for me personally. I will report back on the ride quality of the shaved tire. Some have reported that the ride may be a bit bumpier than before.

My better half drove about 20 miles with a flat. She has never experienced a flat before so she thought she was being chased by a helicopter (these were her words, not mine). The sidewalls were completely shredded. I need to have the rear diff checked out once the tire has been replaced.

Ouch. I taught my wife about what to do when the TPMS warning shows up and she's been good about dealing with it on two occasions.

Yeah…in hindsight, I prolly should have gone over some basic safety stuff with her. She was like… I can’t stop on an expressway. I had to keep going. 😩

I would still stop on a catastrophic tire failure though. The wheel was smoking by the time she got home.
Absolutely. Get off the road so you don't cause an accident that will involve more cars. Glad that didn't happen.

My wife.. has not. Two of my summer tires have slow leaks (getting new tires this year hopefully), and there's been a couple of times where I'll use the car as soon as she gets home, and the TPMS light is on. She's not really a car person though, so unless the car is screaming at her she'll either miss the alert or ignore it and forget about mentioning it to me lol

In my experience, getting ANY tire company to make ANY warranty adjustment is next to impossible.

Hey 👋 C-T dude welcome to Mazdas247

Huh, I have completely the opposite life experience of tire manufacturers and/or installers going above and beyond taking care of the few problems I've had 🤷‍♂️. Maybe it's just my Midwestern charm and good looks lol
