New Sick Setup

The systems outlined in the $500 audio challenge would suit your car just fine so read through and see what your money can buy. $500 is a very small budget if you want a "sick" system so I suggest you stick with some or all of the gear you have and build on it. You won't get anything better in the $500 range when you are looking at 12" subs. So combine your head unit with this for example...

BASS Upgrade: $459.95
Amplifier + 2 12" subwoofers

You think the factory system sounds fine except there is no bass and you need something pounding out bass lines in your hatch or trunk.

Alpine MRP-M450 250W x 1 Car Amplifier $199.99
When thinking about bass, you need to pick an amplifier first because it's the biggest ticket item and it will determine which subwoofers you can run. This Alpine monoblock is priced just right to fit our budget and will put out 1x400w @ 2ohms. 400w is more than enough power to compliment the factory speakers. Any more and you'll be drowing out the midbass and treble.

2 Alpine Type-E SWE-1242 12" 4-ohm subwoofers $149.98/ea
No bass system is complete without a pair of 12" subwoofers. Sure you could find a single 12" subwoofer that can handle 400w but these babies will give you the wow factor when you open your hatch or trunk.

Q-Logic QLH-12D125 Dual 12" Hatchback Subwoofer Box $69.99
A basic dual subwoofer box will be fine for the subs we picked out.

StreetWires PS08BI 8 gauge<!-- Ext Adj Item Price --> Amp Wiring Kit Blue with Patch Cable $39.99
Since you are only connecting one amp rated under 500w an 8 gauge wiring kit should be fine.

i haven't read the thread..lol it rhymed..

but if you planning to spend $500 on a sound system, u probably could get something at wal-mart..lighting audio ftw!
my suggestion is save up and do it right the 1st time (i learned the hard way..on several things i done in my life lol), tweeters, all around new speakers, subs, box, nice amps, good wireing, etc.

but if you just want something in ur trunk to go pfft, then disregard me post ;)

Wont he run into a problem running 4ohm subs with a 2ohm amp? I get confused with the ohm thing.

Two 4 ohm subs wired in parallel is 2ohms. The amp is rated 250x1 at 4ohms or 400x1 at 2ohms. It is a mono amp not a stereo amp.

if you think that is confusing, try two subs with dual 4ohm voice coils

1ohm (wire each of the coils in parallel and wire the subs parallel to the amp)

4ohms (wire the coils in series, and the subs in parallel)

you could wire it in one more configuration, but You'd produce some of the nastiest subwoofer feedback, so I wont even mention it...

It gets even more complicated adding more subs to the mix, you usually want to stay @ 1,2, or 4 ohms

Well, 6 and 12 ohm subs are great when you've got three of them. 3 6-ohm'ers gives you a 2 ohm load. 3 12-ohm'ers gives you a 4ohm load.

My first system was composed of a JL Audio wedge box with 3 12ohm W0s. I had them hooked up to a bridged Alpine amp putting out 300w. That system rocked in my 87 cougar.

That was the most cone area I've ever had in my own car. Funny huh. Most people go bigger and louder...I've gone smaller and better.

^yer not alone...

2x12 orion XTR...
1x10 orion HCCA...

I think I want to go back to a 12, and do a fiber box... but that's off topic...

3x3ohmers = 1ohm (in parallel)

Smaller is better. That's what I plan to do next. I kind of out grown the bass and would rather save weight too.

Speaking of saving weight

Anybody ever build a speakerbox outta Carbon Fiber?

there was a member on here who had a p5 with a carbon enclosure. Cant remember his name but he had a silver p5 with i think 19" volks.

well with Volks he should have the money for it..
