Need info about msp engine

ok seeing how mazda is procrastinating seriously with my case i am thinking of building my own motor first and then pursuing damages later after the motor is built.

I have a few questions regarding the msp engine. I know many say it is just the 2000+ protege engine with a turbo slapped on to it, but how true is this really? Are there really NO DIFFERENCES at all between the block of a regular protege and that of the msp? Are ther oil return lines to the block on the msp that there are not on the regular protege?

I have a friend who works at mazdaspeed who can get me the entire block for 2400 bucks from a protege. My question is if this block will mate correctly with my turbo head etc perfectly, just like it came from the factory new.

If it were your cars would you opt to just buy the block and switch over, or build your motor with forged internals so this s*** wont happen again?

I have heard that there is a greater risk for problems however when you run forged internals as opposed to oem ones. I know detonation wont be an issue but just everyday stuff may becaome a problem. Anybody have any insight to this?
 
2400 bucks????? DooD, get one out of a junkyard for a few hundered, and you got the rest of the money for a build, AND half of what ya need for stand alone :D
 
azian6er - mostly the same, however specifics that could be different are water pump, oil pump, oil pan. Specific fittings in place of plugs. You should go over your stock motor vs. 2L motor side by side when doing the swap in. This will quickly allow you to tell.
 
my problem is that no shops around here work on protege motors (ie internals etc)

So I dont know what im going to do. Maybe send it away to someone who can work on it. Anyone know anyone close to ann arbor MI who will do good work on a FS block with forged internal let me know,

azian6er - we've already started prototyping replacement rods, pistons, cams, valvetrain etc for the MSP. Are you planning on just building the bottom end? If there's metal filings in your oil pan, you're more likely then not going to see some wear in the heads due to the filings.

will the non msp 2.0l fs-de motor be fine without the msp water pump, oil pump? if i was to use the msp turbo kit on it.

1FASTMP5 - the MSP water and oil pump could be higher capacity, hence it would be a good reason to re-use it off the stock (MSP) motor if there's nothing wrong with it. You may want to check the P/N's with your dealership to make sure they're different parts.

On Subarus, factory turbo'd cars had beef'd up oil pumps.

ok cool....but it's not a ''for sure'' thing than, i was thinking it was.:)

seatbackfurther - guess the MSP's got shafted ;) :D Weird thing is that factory turbo'd Subaru engines (unless STi spec) came w/ cast pistons. Rods even on the N/A cars are forged. But freaking heavy!

since we're talking about minor differences

i thought i read somewhere that the MSP has a oil cooler, anyone know about this?

i realize this isn't part of the engine :o

i have never seen the oil cooler and I have looked so unless someone post some factual info I am saying that the MSP has no oil cooler.
 
i do not believe it has an oil cooler either. the only part of the coolant system that i thought was different was the smaller radiator / ic combo
 
yup me too and i have the msp to look at and have never seen the dam thing i could be wrong if someone could tell me otherwise and i can verify to check
 
The oil cooler is not a conventional oil cooler (it isn't air cooled), It uses a waterjacket oil cooler using engine coolant to cool the oil.
This is located where the oil filter is located (the oil filter is mounted on top of it). This system works better because you don't have to be moving for it to work.
note: the system also has a downfall...... if you own a mazdaspeed you know the smell of burnt antifreeze you get....well it can usually be traced back to the oil cooler.
