Need help, MAF

Does anyone have a MAF they want to sell for the our 2.0's. I need one ASAP! I am going to check the dealer tomorrow but maybe someone also knows where I can get a used one or one for cheap. Thanks for any help.

sorry to be ignorant but may i ask why you need it:)

Maybe a junkyard? You've probably already checked, but that's the first place I'd try. :)

Not in anyway are you being ignorant. Yes, you may ask but me telling will probably make me feel like the ignorant one. You seem knowledgeable in the Protege and F.I. field so hopefully what I'm saying makes sense. Plus it is always good to have another opinion just in case someone is bs'ing you. Well, my "tuner" said I needed a new one. The story is...

He did my fmic and cai but I was having a stalling problem. Had the car for a few days then my car got broken into and was in the shop for quite some time. I brought it back to him the next day the got it from the body shop so he could polish up my pipes. Everything was running fine for the exception of the stalling. I help him put it back together and when I started it it's fine. Well, you could smell gas kinda. Then I take off and don't move far because the car is trying desperatly to die. I stop and let it warm up a little. Oh, I forgot, when I 1st started the car the cel popped up. I was like :wtf: I was too tired and said F it i'll deal with that later. So I take off and the car is really really slugish as I try to exit the parking lot. The more I pushed on the gas the more it went no where. I don't have a boost gauge so I was trying to drive without booting just to get down the road, under boost it was just spooling and not moving. It was hard to even get to 30 mph.

So, he looked at it and said I needed a new maf or look at another protege and see if i have the sensors that are supposed to be in there. He only took what he fabricated off just to polish and put everything back the same. he did some porting and add some silicon sealant to the bov and ummm I think that was about all so he thinks the maf is messed up. Oh, and then out of every 3 times I would start the car, it would start up and then stall like the maf was disconnected at least once.

Anyhoo, my question to anyone is. Since the msp is just a 2.0 with a turbo and some extra fuel and the motor is the same. Is the maf the same as the n/a?

thanks to anyone who can get my car back on the road. I was going to dyno the car that day also but this ish had to happen. F ME!!!

oh I just forgot, he also changed out the hose from the side of the block that goes into the intake tube with a steel braided race line with the red and blue fittings (i forgot the names).

Thanks :) I tried car-part.com and came up with one for $150 and 2 others to call. They weren't in CA and plus the junk yard I use is closed so I was going to check with them monday. thanks though.

sound booming,
unless he damaged the meter physically you shouldnt need another one. he sounds a little fishy to me.
is the MAF mounted before or after the turbo?
and yes the MAF'S for all the 2.0l proteges are the same from 2001-2003

Soundbombing: Our cars are OBD-II compliant. You should be able to plug in a diagnostic reader and your on board computer should give you the status of all your sensors. If you have a bad MAF, then that code should be returned on the diagnostic. Don't go buying sensors that you may NOT need.

Also, after you have identified the bad sensor, check the wiring to it. If the wiring is disconnected (yes, people who work on cars do forget to plug in the sensors sometimes), it will cause a bad sensor malfunction. This would be your best case, an unplugged sensor!

Good luck!

The maf is mounted before the turbo. What would happen if it was mounted after? Thanks for the info. A junkyard tried to sell me a maf for a 2000 saying it was the same thing and it was for a 2.0L. I looked up the part and the #'s didn't match and also couldn't find a 2.0 for the protege in 99 or 00.

Thanks again, you've always been a help. On a side note...how's the upgraded maf kit going? any pointers. we need to hook up on aim or yahoo and talk about it.

Thank you very much for the post. It made sense to take the right steps to solve the problem. today I called up the closest shop for the obdII check. and guess what! the maf returned the code. bad for me. who knows how the guy messed it up. by any chance the amount of volume being pushed through along with the cai and the piping being 2.5" have a possibility of messing up the sensor?(anyone)

After the code came up, the guy checked the wiring and everything was plugged in.

thanks again. later.

the upgraded MAF is ready if you are interested in it let me know via email

only 2001 - 2003 MAF are the same calibration on the 2.0
If it were mounted after the turbo it would send a false reading. first off in the density of the charge at a given rpm and temp at a given load and rpm.
you can send me a message on yahoo handle perfworks2002
