Mystery P5 problems...am i alone????

I've noticed that when I turn on my driving lights/headlights, the gauges dim down a bit. However, they are still readable at night. Only at dusk are they hard to see when I have my headlights on. Is this normal?

garu

That was the case on all four vehicles I've owned.

2. Shifting in (5-spd manual) reverse is a pain in the arse on many occasions. I'd say 3 out of 5 times when i want to shift into reverse, doing nothing fancy, it doesn't want to engage. Clutch IS depressed all the way. I sometimes have to clutch more than a few times to get reverse engaged. Wierd....

for all 5 spd car, you have to shift into 1st gear before shift into reverse so that it will engage and shift better and smoother

the reverse thing is normal, i have it as well but no too often.
i just depress the clutch and shift into reverse again.

my gauges are bright enough...why dont you go to the dealership and try another protege to compare the intensity of the gauges

Main reason for reverse being hard to shift into is because it is the only gear that is not synchronized.

If you have driven any older vehicles (not talking about the 80s here) then many with standard transmissions did not have a synchronized first gear. Have three Studebakers from the early 60s that are like this. However, with the Borg Warner overdrives all three vehicles go in and out of first without any problems.

Dash light are only a problem at dusk. Hard to see driving toward the sunset.

Yeah, reverse is a " once in a while" problem. My gauge lights are pretty bright though.. Hit the dealer up to make sure your 5 is str8 though..(dance)

damn iv never noticed a dimmer nob for the gauges.......do i ask where they are and risk the torment....yes...where is it

Well technically is located thus, from left to right:

1st: Coinholder/pocket
2nd: Foglight on/off switch
3rd: Cockpit/Dash Dimmer; right below the lightbulb picture. :p The dimmer is up/down so it feels like part of the dash.

I know you not a noob but still...hey...in my first car (ford Focus hatch) i didnt discover that the back bottom seat could fold COMPLETELY flat until 1year and a half later!!!! Hahahahaha!! :wtf:

It happens to the best of us.

the reason that 5spds have trouble going into reverse sometimes is that there is no syncro going to that gear, they dont put one there because they figure your not going to be shifting into reverse at 30mph, so its normal sometimes if you have to double clutch to get it to go in

I know that in most standard cars reverse is always an issue.
An easyfix to this headache is to put it 1st gear, move the car forward just a notch and then it should be easy to engage the reverse gear.

I had the problem to shift in reverse gear too, so I had tried your method. But the bad thing is I couldn't even shift in 1st gear sometimes also....:wtf:

Anyone can help me???

The gauges are fine at night when it's dark but say like it's just starting to get dark or on a rainy day and u turn on ur lights, it definately seems dark.

I keep my gauges almost all the way down, as my night vision sucks. The gauges on a p5, turned all the way up, are enough to toast your retinas.

Call the dealer.

If you want you can get the dealer to check out your gauges. I had no prob with mine, but now i got reverse indiglo, bright as hell. As for the reverse problem, i put it into another gear then it goes right in with no problem.

I have that problem with reverse on occasion...basically the gears don't line up. Usually its because my foot is on the brake. If I take my foot off the brake and let the car roll 2-3" (forward or backward) it will line up and let me shift into reverse.

or you can clutch, let go, clutch and try again, also another safety issue is when you are in 5th and cruisin downthe HWY with cruise control on, you can pull it out of gear without the clutch and your revs will go to redline..

1. Lights are so bright I can see them in the day.

2. I experience the problem occasionally but quite rarely. I park my vehicle in 1st, does this help? If I ever do experience the problem I just double-clutch and it engages fine. What gear do you guys park in?

hm.... that is so weird.... some ppl say their gauges are bright enough to be blinding but for some reason i went to check at a dealer with 2 other p5s on the lot and their gauges were the same... dim like mine...

does anyone know if this has anything to do with the car not being started or moved for like a month and the battery maybe low on voltage?

there bright enough at night but I guess I am just use to my accord with the reverse glow gauges....
