My turn...LSD took a big crap.

I knew it was coming soon, but didn't expect it tonight....oh well, I needed to overhaul the trans anyway.

There were 4 ppl in the car and we did a pretty strong 2nd gear run...all of the sudden the engine starts bouncing off the rev limiter. Over the next 2 minutes the car would stop driving in gear. At first it would drive a little in gear, then stopped driving at all. I can just put the car in gear and let out the clutch without it stalling out. There were some mechanical sounds from the trans at first, but in the end it was like I am just revving it in neutral while in gear.

I'm just happy it's not the engine.

Have 48k miles on stock clutch an most of them at higher than stock power. Also did a full day of hard autox once.

Any suggestions?

I know I need a new clutch, might as well while I have the trans out. Should I just weld the stock LSD back together? I mean that'll be the cheapest route, and the stock LSD worked fine for me.

Thanks.

Well if it's broken, you'll need a new one. Then, if you want to prevent it from happening again, you'll need to weld it. Add in the clutch & labor & you're looking at $1000 or more. I hope this never happens to me, but I would want to get a Quaife if it did...I don't like the idea of having an econo differential.

yes
warranty is good to 50k :D

lol
get the replacement LSD (stronger, IIRC) and a spec stage 3 clutch :D

They'll put the same crap in there again. I'll def. try to get them to do the labor though. I had my eye on that spec clutch for a long time :)

there is a stage 3 hybrid (6 puck IIRC?) and a stage 3 full face.

he has either, but the hybrid pwnz

Mazda has the new version of the lsd which is stronger. If your doing it yourself and decide to replace the diff, don't forget you have (should) to replace the pinion shaft also. (they come in matched sets.)

You think I have a chance of getting this done under warranty? I'm not sure I want to go through the hassle. I'm sure they say it's not covered after they charge me the diagnostics fee. I want to get the clutch replaced at the same time, do you think they'll go for that?

Thanks.

honestly i wouldnt expect them to replace it under warranty however why not try if it wont cost anything.

It'll cost me atleast a diagnotics fee, which is prolly close to mid $500. I'll have to call them and see what they can do for me, being the fact that the stock LSD is kinda weak.

Try to TIG the broken one back together. It locks up a lot better than the new one. The new one doesnt use spring force anymore in turn making it some what stronger but reducing the slip lock up effect.

I believe all stock msps had the pre revision LSD. The difference is easily felt coming out of a turn. The original LSD produces a lot more torque steer than the revision.

I'd just screw the warrenty, cause u know they won't give it to you, just say **** that, go get a Quaife, and a Spec Stage 2...you'll be set for a nice smooth long ride man. Seriously, why bother paying Mazda to diagnose, when you just just get a shop to open up, and install new stuff for a better price than they'd give you, and then you get better stuff put in, to better handle any higher than stock HP you may or may not have;). But hey, thats just what I'd do, I mean, the chances of you gettin a warrenty are slim, and you'd have to remove any non-stock parts to ensure the warrenty

I'm thinking the same thing, aside from the Quaife.

my LSD crapped out at 46k miles while on my way to the store. I wasn't even pulling very hard ,just normally... As I have posted my car stopped moving after it popped out of 3rd gear. It was suspected it was the clutch b.c it would just rev in every gear and not move. I didn't even try to get it done under warrenty b.c of my mods and not wanting factory parts back in...I now have a spec stage 3 clutch, quaife lsd, solid motor mounts, and ss clutch line lol....and i love it more then every :)
