My Own $18000 challenge

a 200sx comes with an sr20de, why swap for a det? just do your own turbo setup if you have 18k. redrims bought his car heavily modified already from a guy on sr20deforum.com, might want to check out there.

if it were me i'd go with a 92 talon with a 6 bolt motor and a 4 bolt rear end. get one in decent condition for like 3k, and with 15k left for mods you'll easily be deep in 12's and should be able to handle decently.

I really like his RedRims 200Sx , i will look into that , just want to know how much he has put into it?

So do you think the mitsu 4g63 motor and drivetrain out of the evo 5 would be too much and put it in a mirage?

You know, I was seriously just thinking about gettting a mirage w/ a 4g63 swap for another project.:D Those things are just as bad ass as a 200/240 with a sr20 swap.

The sr20det motors come in FWD and RWD. The most popular version in the BlueBird SR20DET. That's the motor I have also. Its VERY cheap also. Doesn't take much to have a 12s car at all. You can either chose between a 91-94 SE-R ($500-$2000) or a 200sx SE-R ($3000-$6000). Transmissions are capadable. Stock SE-R tranny has LSD. A Bluebird motor usually runs anywhere from $1000-$2000.

I'm usually on IM or MSN late at night/early morning after work. If you need more info, you can try to contact me then or PM me.

There is a write up on the sr20 forums, but here's a few things I remember...lol

Swapping to a JDM motor is actually more practical;

- they have stronger/beefier internals (can take more hp than a USsr20 motor)
- more agressive cams
- oil cooler
- comfort of having a less mileage motor

and several other things I fail to remember...lol but after reading that, the reason for swapping made more sense than keeping the US version if your looking for big hp numbers.

if you're going for big hp numbers, you'll change that stuff anyways :) here are more differences: http://www.se-r.net/car_info/de_det_differences.html

i think the main reasons people swap are 1) jdm is always better, just ask anyone :p 2) the mileage thing since a lot of the us sr20's are starting to get up there in age and 3) it's easier and quicker than building a proper turbo setup from scratch
that's just my opinion though

my brother's friend has an egg with a det swap (at least i think he still has it, his floor decided to crack near the strut tower in back, there's pictures on sr20deforum, that sucked for him), and my brother is now looking to trade his 200sx for a classic. they're definitely solid cars, i'm just partial to dsm's myself

i say with 18k you should do the gti-r swap, or at least get the quad throttle bodies :D

Cool guys thanks a lot, now i just have to determine which one i choose, the EVo5 conversion, or the 200sx sr20det, I will keep you guys updated

this evoV conversion, does it include awd and all that fun stuff? if so, it sounds like it's going to be a pita

Check this out...(hmm)

Hey guys,
The 240 in the background has been a work in progress for a LONG time, my girlfriend and I are actually bored of it and are planning to sell it.....

It's a 92 SE....with an SR20DET Blacktop...That front bumper is for the S15 conversion that just needs to be slapped on....

I think my girlfriend still has somewhat of a site up at www.geocities.com/nd2boostt

Opportunity knocks. ;)

wow, your Stephanie is quite the hottie... :)
You gunna go out and buy her that Supra she wants?
How much for the car?

E30 M3 with mods OR
E36 M3 OR
E36 328i w/ mods

If I had 18k, I'd buy a MSP and save the rest for a rainy day.

I would stay away from the gti-r swap. It's far from practical. It has the most differences between the sr20 motors, so getting parts will be harder and more expensive. At least, with the Bluebird you can go to your local Nissan dealer and get parts if something minor happens. Not with a GTi-R, for the most part. You'll end up spending more time, money, and fustration if you go with a GTi-R. This is the reason why most choose the BluBird over the GTi-R, even though it's like $200-$300 more with 20+ more hp, larger turbo, and larger intercooler.

Are you looking to stick with an import? Best bang for your buck is an F-Body with an LS1, toss a supercharger on it, upgrade the rear end, suspension, few other things and your running 12's pretty easy.

You can also setup an F-Body for the track, might not handle as well as your p5 BUT they can handle pretty damn well if you set it up correctly.

If it where my 18,000. Id look for an 88 M3 get a decent turbo setup, nice coil-overs, and some fat wheels and call it a day.

I would rather go with some form of import, either from the lands of kraught, or the fields of rice. The EVoV conversion would be a awd. Does anyone know if TURbo Bunny still has his 240 i think i will email him.

if i ever get tired of my msp...i'm selling it and buying a used 240sx and doing the sr20det swap. so much potential for that engine. reason i like it is 'cause i'm really into drifting and wish that i could just get a new MSM. ::yawn:: and they look really nice if u knoe how to put the body pieces together.

18K huh ? well there are some rx7s that are going for pretty cheap...most of them are in good running condition and with the right care and modifications, you can do a lot w/ it. same thing with an old miata. get a '91 w/ low mileage (there might be some out there) and get flyin' miata's FMII or FMIV (coming out sometime soon hopefully)...upgraded suspension and pieces and that turbo would absolutely kill. and there's a large aftermarket for the miata. lots of different options.

toyotas...doubt u'll ever find a MKIV supra for less than 18...unless it's a repo or salvage. try finding a turbo mr2. those are nice to mod and a great handler thanks to the mid-engine setup. can't think of much else...but if u're looking to spend nearly 18K, u have lots of options

or you could buy an ae87 and get a 3 rotor, now that is ****** awesome conversion! goodluck finding a MKIV for under like 25( if its acctualy in decent condition and runs) but thats the lowest from what ive seen

i agree with jflo, you can get a new body style rx-7 for 13000 or less. upgrade the turbo's and call it a day...... or maybe it's the fact that i just love rx-7's
