My MS3 was stolen on Friday!!

oh btw an easy way to beat the stupid biometric finger print system is because people tend to never wipe them down after using them...... so basically their finger print is still there if you "dust" it and then you can use something (not saying) to push down and use the "finger print" you dusted... so remember, if you have a biometric anything (like some of the laptops) make sure you wipe it clean ;)

biometrics on a laptop don't work like that. you have to swipe your finger over a small area not stick your whole thumb or finger on a big pad.

Do a little bit of light reading before contradicting someone :(

...... only a select few laptops actually have the biometric "stick" surface scanner built in, and not everyone purchases one of those laptops, (because they don't like associated features they need on the notebook and I've yet to see someone purchase a notebook solely for it's finger scanner)....

Where as anyone else who already has a laptop but wants the "fingerprint" security ends up buying a separate piece of hardware and surprise surprise it ends up being a nice little finger pad.

http://www.eyenetwatch.com/biosecurity/biometric-security-buy-hardware.htm

All of those have nice little surface areas to leave a finger print.... I personally have the Microsoft USB Fingerprint Reader for my desktop.... I haven't seen desktops coming from factory with their own scanners....... not yet anyway.

And yes I wipe mine down every time after I "scan" my finger to unlock my computer (2thumbs) and you can set them up to scan any finger or your thumb, whatever you like.

light reading? how about the 5000 Dell and 4000 Toshiba laptops I take care of every day? Biometric authentication on each and every one because they are considered medical devices. In addition they all have The Trusted Platform Module (TPM) which makes them much more secure than some old laptop with a fingerprint pad (lol) added. Take a look at what fingerprint readers look like on a new Dell-

Now understand that it reads your fingerprint as you swipe it. A static print lifted off a glass or a monitor will not defeat this type of reader unlike the obsolete hardware of yesteryear you are talking about.

It just goes to show you can't trust anyone.

I was having a small party. As with most of these things, you don't always know everyone who shows up. (Friend of friends show up.....etc.) I am the friendly type of person. I stop to help out people in need, and while I know there are always bad people out there, I would rather help people out. God knows I might need it myself some day.

Anyway...about 2 am, my neighbor knocks on my door and says, "You know someone just drove off in your car. They hit my car as they took off." My guess is that when I wasn't watching he stole my keys of the counter and left. I was out towards the back of the house and never noticed until it was too late.

The guy that he came with said he doesn't know him that well. (He may be lying, but either way, I can't make him tell me anything.)

The cops have nothing to go on. At this point, I don't even want them to find the car --- God knows what this bastard did to it.

I can't believe it. You invite people into your home, you feed them, you get them free drinks, and they rob you.

It is really hard not to get jaded about life in general.

I guess I am done with the Mazda Forum for a while...

So SORRY!! I would just lose my MIND!!!

Kim.

Well I just talked to the body shop. He did burn the clutch out...in less than 500 miles! Otherwise the damage is minor. (Scratched rims...all 4) They have already ordered the parts and the car should be done in about 2-3 weeks and ready for sale. (They detail it as well.) Then it is off to Carmax, my dealer, Autotrader, and then private party --- in that order. The highest bidder gets her!

You said your neighbor would pay 22K for it when you got it fixed didn't you? Why the hell wouldn't you sell it to him, did he back out? 22K for a stolen, damaged, used MS3 is a hell of a good offer.

Well talk is cheap. Not to mention...I don't see him and his wife coming up with that kind of money quickly. I am not going to do a loan with him, so we'll see. Oh...and when I go to sell the car, it won't be damaged anymore. As far as the fact that it was stolen, it isn't stolen anymore. Assuming the body shop does a complete inspection and fixes everything...that is a non-issue. Used...yep, can't argue with you there, but considering what I have seen two used MS3s going for in the DC/VA/MD area, I should be able to sell mine without difficulty at a good price. (I even have the MS CAI -- the other two didn't.)

Yes medical computers you work with..........how many every day people buy medical computers? Awesome, I was talking about your average run of the mill person buying a "basic" computer from dell or best buy/circuit city.......Nice job pointing out laptops only........ desktops don't have integrated, and a lot of laptops don't have it either.... How many different models from Toshiba offer the finger scanner? Or Dell? 5000 dell laptops and 4000 toshiba laptops just tells me exactly what I was talking about. Are they all the same model? Cause I'm pretty sure they are, with only a few being different from the rest, as I said there's only a few models from some companies....

To top it off, if you're smart enough.........then you know there are ways (and what ways they are) to bypass the fingerprint reader on your laptops (rei) I never said you could get a fingerprint from the small ones, I'm well aware what they look like, I simply said........ few people buy them.... even businesses. I worked for a while on the IT Department at the Miami Dolphins Training Camp..... they bought large quantities of the same model laptops/desktops, with only a few being different, and I'd say probably 5 had the built in fingerprinting when I was there.

I'm saying with the finger pads they leave the prints (which is all you can get for a desktop) and unless your position requires you frequent moving from one office to the next you pretty much get a desk and a desktop, so no built in stick finger scanner :(

Also thanks for point out it reads my finger print as I swipe it.......... I already knew about that last year........and yes you can still defeat it with a "swipe" of a lifted fingerprint, you may not lift the print from the scanner itself but you can definitely lift a print from the laptop itself.... and if you think I'm just talking about lifting a print with tape and dragging the tape across, you're on the wrong route.... someone in Forensic Science or some covert ops in the military would have an idea exactly what I'm referring to. and the fingerpads aren't yesteryear technology, they are still making them to this day, they may not be as "secure" as a stick scanner, but until that becomes available for desktops and mice and keyboards, that's about all one can use.

CARFAX will pwn you though :(

Carmax offered me a great deal on my old Camry, so it can't hurt to check. Their offer is good for 7 days, and they are 5 minutes from my house -- so it would be silly not to see what they will give me. If nothing else, I am kind of curious.

i sold my Saab to car max and they gave me a pretty good deal. definitely try it out, nothing to lose.

^That is what I was trying to get at.
If I ever looked at a car and found out that it had been stolen and had damage done to it previously... I wouldn't pay the same price for it as I would for a car that was never stolen and had never been damaged. But, there are some people that might I guess.

I hear you...but it can't hurt to try all of my options. I think between the four possible buyers, one of them will offer me something decent. Remember, you aren't going to get my car anywhere in 100 miles of here for less than $25K OTD. (new of course.) If I can get 22K I would be saving someone 3K.

There is a trick to it all though.... my GF has had her Mazda6 serviced @ the mazda dealers.... as well as me having my MS6 done....

Even after I had the TSB performed on my MS6, about a month later I checked my car and her car on CARFAX.... neither showed any of the services ever done to the car......

Problem with carfax is that dealers, agencies aren't always reporting things to CARFAX, reason? so they can sell you a lemon.... dealers won't report things.... insurance agencies will though.

So yeah it can't hurt to try it, CARMAX knows it was stolen right? if not...... don't ask don't tell, rofl....

But yeah it can't hurt to try whatever, your neighbor offered 22k for it, and he knows it was jacked.... if he can pool the money together that's someone right there

HOWEVER, I wouldn't personally want to do a deal like that.... because it's your neighbor and if the car thief screwed up something else that hasn't show up as "broken" yet then he might get pissed and blah blah blah, blames you for it...... and that would be a bad relationship, with your neighbor next door, that you don't need. :(

I just got offered 21K (Yeah...they know it was stolen and is in the shop getting fixed.) for it at the Mazda dealership! I think I can get more.

Mazda will buy it for 21k and then sell it for 23, 24k watch..... you can get more, try running a carfax on your car and see if it shows up as "stolen"
