My first accident with my CX-5 (vs 2004 Sonata)

To late NOW!

It sounds like your situation worked out great anyway! $24k trade-in for the 2013 was very good and you got the 2014 with the 2.5L engine at a lower payment, can't beat that!

What color did you get?

I parked my brand new car all over boston today, not a scratch, I'm so relieved.

I do "the walk-around" almost every time I return to my CX-9 in a parking lot. I try to be casual about it so I don't look like a total prick, but that first dent or scratch in a new vehicle one of the sickest feelings I've ever felt!

My CX-9 is White (Pearl) so it's not nearly as succeptible to visible damage as other colors. But something will eventually happen, it's inevitable.

My 2006 Mazda3 s 5-door is Titanium Gray, looks great but shows every scuff and scratch. When it was barely six months old, someone clipped the right front corner and made a deep scratch at least 8" long in the front bumper cover and broke the clip that held the bumper cover in place under the wheel well! It happened in a Publix (upscale grocery store) parking lot and I was sick as a dog and mad as hell! Luckily, a decent citizen saw it happen and left me a note wth the make/model or the car and the license plate number. I used my connections as an Insurance Agent to get the name and address of the vehicle's owner. I called her and convinced her that she could be charged with hit-and-run and go to jail if I called the cops. She admitted doing it but was a total B!tch about it and said it was my word against hers. Then I told her I had the witness (who left me the note, even though they did so anonymously) and that the cops could tell by the location and size of the scratch on her bumper and paiint transfer that she hit me....she quickly changed her tune!

I had her meet me at a body shop, got an estimate and waited for her to go to the ATM and bring me back the cash for that amount. The estimator at the body shop was my brother-in-law and, even though he could have written it for a new bumper cover, installation hardware, painting and labor ($600+ easily), I had him write it for $250 just to teach her a lesson. That's about what it would cost him to do the work for me...

In reality, my pal at the insurance company who ran the plates could have landed in some trouble (legal and job-related) for doing it. And the police here in Georgia can't/won't issue a citation for hit-and-run or any moving violation that occurs on private property (such as the Publix parking lot). But I still felt that the end justified the means and justice was served...and I knocked that little twit down a few pegs, which I enjoyed most of all! =)

But that was also seven years ago and, now that I'm approaching 40, I'm less inclined to bend the rules and put myself at risk when it isn't necessary. Now, I'd probably just find out who the person is and send them a letter asking for them to do the right thing and pay for the damage like an honest, decent person. And if they didn't, somehow all of their windows would end up shattered out of the blue....karma's a b****! =)

Here in CA, hit and run on private property is chargeable.

I witnessed an incident in Concord in a private lot, called cops with plate number, car descrition, driver description, etc. They called me right back after stopping perp, had me drive 2 blocks to positively ID driver and car. Busted.

That's how it should be EVERYWHERE!

I had fender bender in Los Angeles last year. I visit my cousin and her family out there at least once per year and I drive her SUV ('08 Lexus GX470) a lot while I'm there, shuttling her three kids to all their activities, appointments, etc. I try to give her a break and play Mr. Mom for a 7-10 days.

Last June, her daughter had major spine surgery at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (on W Sunset Blvd). I was driving from her house in Woodland Hills to the hospital and as I exited the 101 Freeway, a jerk popped out from my right side in a new BMW convertible. I swerved and almost crushed the Prius next to me, but still clipped the corner of his car. He was a total douchebag and kept trying to get me to just trade information and not call the cops. Luckily, her Lexus SUV only had very minor visible scrapes on the bumper but his hood and one headlight were crushed and front bumper was almost pulled completely off....but he still didnt' want to get a police report? I insisted on calling 911 and he got irate and got back in his car like he was going to drive away. I told him I'd report him for hit-and-run if he did and went back to my vehicle to wait for the police....they showed up 55 minutes later and ended up arresting him for driving without a license and sevearal other charges that they didn't share with me. He also didn't have insurance, so I suddenly realized why he didn't want to calll the cops.

The Lexus dealer managed to buff out most of the obvious damage and do wonders with a little touch-up paint. My cousin couldn't even find where it happened when I told her about it and she went to look.

Driving in L.A. is scary, but it helps if you have a big SUV to run over the idiots.

Scratch/dent protection

I parked my brand new car all over boston today, not a scratch, I'm so relieved.

My dealer offered scratch and dent protection for 5 years for $600. It also covers windshield and hail damage. I went for it because I work at a university with careless student drivers and narrow parking spaces. Plus, we live in a hail prone area, and damage from falling acorns in the fall is also a problem. I'm sure I'll have a claim or two over the next 5 years. We'll see.

SAME color...Nobody knows we got a new car!.........And we ain't telling.

so going from 2013 to 2014, did you notice less rattles / noises in the cabin?

too bad they dont have manual with 2.5liter engine. I did notice the new Mazda 3 coming out will be available with manual in EVERY trim level, hopefully a new trend. UK has the magical AWD, 170hp diesel, and manual trans but only on top trim line, not sure if I would want to spend close to 30K on CX-5.

currently waiting for the other driver's auto insurance to do their evaluation / investigation before they determine their policy holder was at fault. Looks like at least 2 weeks of waiting till then. I think I will wait for the physical car damage settlement from ins comp before fixing the car.

I never had any issues with the '13. No rattles, no mirror or hood vibrations, no interior plastic noises. NOTHING. When I first found this forum, I was surprised to hear about some of the issues a few have.

I wish they would put the paddle shifters, for the automatic, like the Miata.

As long as they will pay up when the time comes, that sounds like a fair deal. We have had 20+ hailstorms in North Georgia in the past two years, so hail damage has become a major issue here also. I got caught in one of the worst (probably THE worst) of these storms in March 2011 in my 2006 Mazda3. I got hammered by baseball-sized hail and it instantlly shattered the windshield, destroyed my hood and put some nasty dents in the roof (it's a hatchback). Luckily, I was about 400 yards from an overpass and I parked under it under the storm passed, otherwise it would have been even worse. The damage was around $2800 to repair. It was covered by my Comprehensive (aka Other Than Collision) coverage which only has a $100 deductible. Comprehensive claims aren't considered at-fault either, so it didn't cause my premium to increase.

Hail sucks.

Care if I ask who the at-fault driver is insured with? Or a hint....I'm curious and can probably tell you how long and/or difficult they'll be about the whole thing...

IgoZoom, the soon to be at fault driver has a policy with Commerce Insurance of MA. Gladly take any advice you may have.

I had the same experience. The 2013 I test drove had no rattles, squeaks or vibrations and when I took delivery of my 2013 it too had not a single rattle, squeak or vibration. Smooth as glass.

Thanks for the info. I will be putting in a diminished value claim as the car will now have an "accident" in the vehicle history report

Not necessarily.... I had an accident in 1998 with my 1996 Jetta - did $13k worth of damage (mostly airbags and front-end sheetmetal) and when I went to sell the car in 2003, the accident never showed up on Carfax! (But I did disclose it to the buyer...)

I had a run in with a deer in my 2009 Mazda3. Did $7500 of damage, repaired at my dealer. Traded it back to them in 2011 and they said the carfax was clean. Although they knew about the damage as they did the repair.

Agreed, I don't expect CarFax to show accidents. I know 2 specific Porsches (a Boxster and a GT2) where owners had accident repairs costing $8K and $25K+ each, nothing on CarFax shown for both.

Lucky me, I just attracted another idiot today and got hit on the right side in the supermarket parking lot. Fortunately I was stopped waiting to leave the lot and this very old man (~90s) was backing up out of his spot when suddenly I felt the CX-5 shake like a 5.0 earthquake (spent 4 summers in California). My mother in law was in the passenger seat and is fine and when I met the other driver I was surprised someone gave him a DL at his age. Fortunately I did not see any damage on mine or his vehicle, and even though I was pissed that my 4 week old CX-5 had been hit, I told him to be more careful in the future and went on my way back home.

Are these things magnets or what? Only 210 miles on the ODO, and already a tap. What's most upsetting is that he changed his story twice while waiting (forever) for someone he called to show up. First he said there was no damage and no need to call the cops, then he said he didn't even hit my CX. I can't stand liars and you can't underestimate anyone at any age.

Sorry Hollis for stealing your thread and I will post pics once I figure out how to download from wife's phone. Just glad the side is flexible and didn't ding, crumple or crease the panels.

HelloMello,

no biggie. quite interesting reading other experiences.

quick update: received my property damage check from the other driver's insurance company which came up close to the highest estimates I received from local auto body shops. kind of surprised they didnt try low-ball an amount. Their also going to pay for 7 day car rental at mid-size class while my CX-5 is being repaired next week.

At least you hit a car and they payed for the damage. A couple of weeks ago I backed into a dumpster and broke my passenger side tail light!! Now I have to replace it about $280 w/o installation; those were quite expensive few drinks I had that night!! (mad)(mad)
