MS3 in RX-8 forums

I'm conflicted on the whole RX-8/MS3 thing. I'm considering both of them for my next daily driver/kid hauler/autocrosser.

The Speed3 has more HP, more TQ, more head and legroom all around, more cargo room, gets better gas mileage (both cars require Premium, I think), seats one more person, and costs less!

The RX-8, on the other hand, is RWD, and a rotary... That's kind of a short list of advantages, but...

I miss my rotary, I miss RWD, and when I drove an RX-8 recently, I still kind of loved it. It's more of a pure sports car than the Speed3 is. It sits lower, revs higher, pushes instead of pulls, and just feels more like a sports car! It costs more new, but then it's been out longer, so I have a better chance of finding one used. Buyers skew a bit older, too, so I think I'd have a decent chance of finding a used one that's un-abused.

No doubt the MS3 would fit my son's kid seat better, but the RX-8 would fit it in a pinch, and he'll be in a booster seat soon, so it may be a moot point as that should sit him back further.

The real deal-breaker on the RX-8 may actually be the transmission tunnel vs. my wife's legs! When I test-drove one recently, the salesdrone drove it off the lot with me riding shotgun, then we switched at a parking lot down the road. I noticed in the passenger seat that the tranny tunnel was so wide in the foot well that I had to sit angled with my feet toward the outside of the car. It wasn't very comfortable, and would drive me insane on a long road trip! My wife wasn't with me that day, so she hasn't tried it, but her legs are as long as mine, so I suspect she'd be just as unhappy as I was over there. If we take one for a drive and confirm that problem, the RX-8 is out.

I'd love to get a white Speed3, and it would be really cool to have a brand new car for the first time in my life, but by the time we've finished school, moved back to VA found jobs and a house and actually have our finances sorted out enough to do something like that, there probably won't be anymore MS3's on lots, unless they continue in to '09 models. :(

I wouldn't say the 8 sucks. I owned an 8 for four years. The 8 was made to turn and that's where it shines, it is what it is, one of the best handling cars made.

The 8 was fun but it was becoming a pita to own. I've never looked back since trading it in on my MS3. Two completely different cars, but each a blast to drive.

There are a lot of fanbois on any car forum. RX8 club was a pretty cool and very informative site... it's overflowing with used 8 owners now. Once they get over the fact that they'll own you in the twisties there's not anything left for them to say... of course to own you through the twisties they have to first catch up(naughty)

There are some MS3 posts over there where the car is appreciated... I've stuck up for my new lil station wagon plenty of times.

i wanted an rx8 before the speed3 but i like torque too much... so for me having the space of the ms3 with a few k in mods i think is the best of both worlds.

With my cobb springs, sways, tmic, su mount, cobb ap on order, cpe tbe, cobb sri, redline tranny, twm bushings on 225 tires only an insanely modded rx8 has a prayer on or off the track.

if it ever comes with factory FI, that will be my next car lol. the image, the rwd, its just a nice place to be with some more get up and go they'd be impossible to keep on the lots

oh no doubt. I was on that forum frequently when I owned my 04 RX8. They are extremely defensive about their cars. It makes sense since the RX8 is actually quite lacking in power. Generally they produce around 180whp. I know my Speed 6 would smoke one, so a Speed 3 will really embarass the car. They don't like that the RX8 is the third fastest car in the Mazda lineup, so they are quick to hate, even on their own brand.

They really tear into the 350Z due to it's superior power advantage, and they can get mad at the S2K. Overall, that site has quite a few owners who feel very inferior with their lack of power. The RX8 is a fun to drive, beautiful sports car. It just lacks power, in my experience was a reliability nightmare, and guzzles gas pretty badly. Ashame they never did anything to upgrade it all these years.

haha what about an rx-8 with the 2.3 disi motor in it?
they're both sweet cars, but id never pay nearly 10k for a slower, less practical car. this top gear does make me want one though

yea i wonder why no one has done that yet (just did a quick google for it and found nothing). seems like a perfect comprimise if you weren't a die hard rotary fan and you had enough money to rip apart a car to make a totally new one. if i had enough money, i'd probably end up like jay leno (ie his jet bike)

direct quote from that forum that had me rolling around laughing...

"go play need for speed carbon, it has a very realistic portrayal of how the ms3 and the rx8 responds to mods. I believe in the game the rx8 is the best tier one handling car, but the ms3 is quicker in the straights. Both drivers being equal in the game, im sure the rx8 would win. "

seriously?!?! (wiggle)

Not that our MS3's are ugly but the RX8 is, IMHO, better looking.

Regarding straight line performance vs handling performance. I rationalize it this way- it's much MUCH easier (and cheaper) to get the MS3 to match the handling of the RX8 than it is for the RX8 to match the accelleration and power of the MS3.

There is a very good reason that Mazda did not turbo the Rx-8. It would just add to the problems that the cars has. I know that in our shop we replace rotary engines every week in rx-8s. in fact thats the car that mazda made to keep the service departments in buisness lol J/K

Rx7>Rx8, ive owned alot of 7's and i own a 88 TII Rx7 now and a 08 MS3 my 7 with just bolt ons spanks my 3 but the 3 is stock so....i would have gotten the 8 if it was turbo, thats the only thing mazda messed up on with the 8 was making it n/a. If they really really wanted to keep it n/a they should have put a 20b 3 rotor engine in, that would have woke it up quite a bit...

The RX-8 is such a beautiful car and it is a shame that it is underpowered.
We have to realize that the 8 is not meant to be the same kind of car as the 7 (FD especially). They were making some effort to keep costs down, if nothing else to keep the Rotary alive on the streets. Thankfully there was enough interest to have another RX on the drawing board and with luck it will show us what a rotary can do on a track. Yes I know even boosted, the torque isn't the best. Hell even a dump truck can be fast on a straight line.

I don't really get the "twisties" argument. Where do these people live, in the mountains? Most people can't really take advantage of exceptional handling cars in the real world. The MS3's handling is more than enough for the street, and its more usable power band makes it a much more livable performance car on a daily basis.

I probably would have bought an RX-8 eventually if I hadn't ended up loving the hatch & then buying my MS3.

But I have to agree w/ some of the people in that thread... comparing the MS3 to the RX-8 is apples and oranges...

LOL I actually do live in the mountains and my MS3 is soooo much fun on the twisties. Definitely handles good enough for the serious hairpins and curves. Hopefully once I upgrade my sways it'll be even more fun :D

The MS3 would spank the RX-8 in all categories except for autox type courses with really tight corners. Looks are subjective of course but performance speaks for itself.

Like I said,Ive owned a 04 RX8 and would never take it over my MS3.Its just too underpowered but that is really my only complant and the fact that it is not intended for winter driving. It would be fun to do a motor swap tho with the MS3 motor.I wish I had that kinda cash because that would be fun then a 5 year old with a new big wheel..

the RX8 is in an entirely different league. It's a wonderful car for those of us who can fit in it, and deal with the less than ideal fuel economy. But the rotary engine is definitely the star of the show, followed by radical styling and pure 50/50 weight balance, rotation on turns etc.. purely a driver's car. My MS3 is awesome too, but entirely different market segment, and price point as well.

i almost bought an rx8, then i came to my senses. IMO the only thing that the rx8 has on the ms3 is looks, after that, i wouldnt buy one. all the people i know that have owned one, hated it, and ive driven the rx8 and own a speed 3 and can honestly say the speed 3 is way more fun. while you might drop more pantys with the rx8, youll get bad gas mileage and a slow car. **** that, ill stick with my ms3. If mazda gave the rx8 some balls to compensate for the 19mpg then i wouldnt mind so much, but until then...
