We had a great T&T on Friday--I took only 4 runs and was delighted on how the ZX2 felt. It was 'free' but not stupid loose. Adding the 100 pounds of spring rate to the front was definately a step in the right direction.
It rained on us like a mo-fo on Saturday morning...especially early on. We had no wet setup other than disconecting the RSB...and taking a little air out of the tires. I have, believe it or not, not done a wet event since like 199X...it's been that long--just kind of worked out that way. I like driving in the rain...just not standing around in it.
Look at the water 'speedboat' under the front tires...
Craig and I both got through our second runs...and were doing decently…and by then it was not raining and the course was getting faster as a result...just wet, no standing water. He went out for his third run and spun, and in an effort to get the car re-going, ended up breaking a part in the transmission--most likely the diff (we knew it was already tweaked in April…and were just hoping it would make it thru the season--or at the very least not have it break at the NT). I ended up having Doug Allen, offer a ride in his car (SpecCivic--was 2nd fastest STS car on day 2 at Nationals in 2007)—so I went out all rushed and flustered and not being used to his car (first time in a SpecCivic), spun away my third run too. So for day one I stood on my second-run time, whereas most everyone else improved on their third run time.
Sunday was also wet in the AM…but it was ‘drying conditions’ by the time our runs began. I drove Doug's car again, and being a bit less flustered actually felt pretty good. By the 3rd runs, it was more dry than wet. I began the day way back in 7th and was almost 1.4 seconds out of 6th (RS Subaru). I ended up in 6th about 1.3 seconds up on 7th—meaning that on Sunday I beat him by about 2.7 seconds. It was a moral victory.
My best time on Sunday was a 58.7; the class best (Craig Mankiewicz) was a 57.5, and Jason Frank, was second with a 57.7. I was about .5 off of Doug as well...and .001 off of the fast RS who was 3rd for the event based on a strong Saturday in the wet. It'd be interesting to see how I could manage if I had more than 3.5 runs to learn a SpecCivic!!! They are good cars--no doubt. The funny thing is that I didn't come out of Sunday feeling that "I gotta get me one of these" with respect to the Honda. Especially after Friday...I feel pretty good about the 'Scort. We just need to get it back together.
