Hi all,
Is Memphis a good brand? I've never heard of it. A guy wants to trade my 12" Alpine Type R for his 10" Memphis...

I don't care how good it may be, you have 2 great subs (larger, 2 of them, deadly brand) so why give it up for 1 10"

Memphis = Garbage
Alpine = Best high-volume car audio brand on the market.

I say "high-volume" because there are many audiophile brands out there that make certain products better, but Alpine does everything well and if it has their name on it, you can be sure it is a good product.

alpine is decent best buy stuff... the smaller memphis do suck, it's the 12"+ that are amazing by them. a fraternity brother has two 12s (memphis) in his tiburon and they punch a lot harder than my RF P1s (10"). but he has the older memphis that were a lot tighter then RF, Alpine, JVC, any of them really...

Bass sound is often more a factor of the vehicle and install than it is the brand. The Tiburon is a coupe, and coupes typically have better bass due to their small size. Plus the added cone area of 12" subs will help too. In short, I would put my money down on an Alpine system (given similar budgets and vehicles).

I know I am late to this topic, but I don't agree fully with the Alpine statement. They have many good offerings, and a huge selection of products, but I would not call them the best. Eclipse, before it left car audio had better models and offerings, JL (though some people will complain about pricing) is very well engineered and almost always has excellent product.

Now I am not at all about mainstream brands, I own an internet based brand. Many internet based audio brands are offering far more performance per dollar and superior customer service then the major brands do. Many, have not put their manufacturing overseas. ;)

Edit: Though I am not a Memphis fan, they have built some very nice amps in the past and have had a few decent sub woofers too.

I agree with you Denim, which is why I stipulated "high-volume". Perhaps I needed to be more clear that volume was reference to sales, not loudness. JL Audio is an excellent brand but I don't think their revenue comes close to that of Alpine, Pioneer, Sony, and other mega companies. JL's prices are overall higher and someone new to car audio who doesn't consider themselves an audiophile doesn't necessarily need to pay the premium. Eclipse was an excellent brand for a time period. I wouldn't have purchased any of their amps (better offering from other brands at the price point) but I have owned their subwoofers, component speakers, and head units in the past and never had problems. Their aluminum and titanium cone subwoofers were top of the line when they first came out, and man could they punch!

I will have to ask about numbers for JL. I know in the last 4 or 5 years they have really jumped with their increase in exposure in advertising and promotion. I prefer JL as much of their work is still done here, compared to RF/Alpine/Sony etc. I only played with a few Eclipse amps, not enough to have a fully detailed POV on them. I still have my TC7 based Eclipse 8810's from years ago, those are keepers.

I had a pair of 8708's that I kick myself for selling. Even though they were only 8"ers, they were the tightest subs I've ever had.

TC Sounds, who made the old Eclipse sub woofers is making a come back, but the drivers are no longer being built here in the USA.
