magnumP5's RX-7 Build Thread

Looks good. Guess who just picked up a 7 too? :D

You live soo close we need to meet up sometime lol.
Awesome, what did you pick up? I haven't seen anything too interesting in the for sale ads lately. But yeah, I'm always up for hanging out.

Oh yeah, should be getting pics of the "other" RX-7 soon :)

86 se, really clean. Everything works great sans the sunroof and release for the gas door. I'll post pictures after I wash it, then after the new wheels.

Yea I was out tonight hanging out in Wilder, KY. Then ended up at the bum spot, then Wilder, then Pizza Hut by NKU lol.

Wow, first-year FC. What are your plans for it? I highly suggest checking out www.fc3spro.com. It's geared towards the TurboII but a lot of hte regular maintenance and upkeep stuff apply to all models.

I'm up for hanging out whenever - usually on weekends.

So I also got my camber bolts in (gotta love HPF). Spent about an hour earlier this morning installing them and fixing a loose spring on the front driver's side. That must have been the source for the noise I was getting because it's gone now! Anyhow, tires are now about 1/8" away from the spring perch and I was able to re-dial the negative camber using the strut mount. No more tire/perch contact and no tire/fender contact - SUCCESS!

I'll have to check that site out. I'm on rx7c. Plans are wheels, exhaust, tint, short shifter (shifter has a ton of slop) rework the audio for sure. Its just gonna be a nice little reliable car to have for fun and as backup for when I'm working on the msp. 7 wont be a fast car, I've got the msp for that lol.

You should go to mazda thunder on the 18th. I'm gonna be going down with my buddy (in a 87 fc) it'd be cool seeing 3 red fc's rolling down to the ville together.

^^^ Ugh get away from RX7C and check out RCC - most of the contributing members of RX7C left and formed their own forum there. Need to be careful talking about that here... I'm doing my best to try to build up some rotary knowledge here.

Plans sound good! I was original going to go all out but now I'm not so sure. Just working on suspension and fixing stuff until I figure out what I want to do. Pipe dreams are a single-turbo 13B-RE from a JDM Cosmo or a N/A bridgeported 4-port motor (from a TurboII) with ITB's.

there do seem to be quite a number of guys here going rotary... I'd love to see that section get some more action. I need to get me a rotary. lol

My shifter had a ton of slop too, when I installed my short shifter it turned that the three bolts had just backed out about halfway.

Shifter slop is a result of a number of things - worn/dryrotted rubber shift boots, worn/broken bushings and a worn/broken spring. The previous two are pretty easy to fix/replace and that's what I did. It definitely improved the shifter feel.

Does your shifter move really easiler to one side? If so, the spring is broken. I know mine is, but you have to remove the transmission to fix it so I'm holding off for the time being.

when i had mine all the bushings where gone, even the bottom plastic bushing disappeared. I found that replacing all the bushings with brand new ones really eliminates the need for a short shifter since the shift isnt bad in the first place.

Mazdatrix rear camber links ordered - rear camber will be fixed! I'm debating if I want to also pick up a polyurethane bushing kit for the suspension and the DTSS deletes this month before getting another alignment and corner balance, but I also need to do brake rotors and pads and get spacers for the rear wheels.

I had a buddy here with an 88 TII that had all the bushings replaced and the DTSS eliminators and it felt amazing. I would say if you can get it, go for it. The FC looks clean man I think you're doing a great job, and building it well. Man it makes me miss my FC specially after all the money I dumped into it before school. I just wish I could've had enough to finish it before I left. Really though man good job, I love this build. Can't wait to see what you actually choose for a motor.

^^^ Thanks man. That's my plan for now - clean and simple. I'm really just trying to go through the whole thing and bring its parts to the 21st century for now. I don't plan on touching the engine/exhaust/intake until something breaks until I make up my mind what I want to do.

New pipe dream: streetported 4-port motor with S5 turbo rotors (9:1 compression) with a roots-style blower being fed by ITB's. I figure the blower will make up for the power loss due to the lower comp rotors and streetport (instead of bridgeport) but will also improve driveability over the bridgeport. Looking at www.camdensuperchargers.com and their carb kits (except obviously replace the carb with an ITB setup - need to determine if Weber IDA of DCOE setup).

All dreams aside, my short shifter is FINALLY on its way and my rear camber links came in. This weekend I'll finally have proper camber in the rear!

damn, looking forward to seeing that. ITB setups are sweet, lol.

And blown ITB's are even sweeter :D

Probably never happen but it's fun to wish anyway. TWM Induction has some interesting looking DCOE-style ITB's that would probably work great. I just figured this would be a very unique setup (just need to add ~$4k to my budget, LOL!)

LOL, blowers are badass, flat out. They may be inefficient, but boy do they look/sound great and make good power. I've never seen a blower on an rx-7 or any rotary for that matter... How are they setup? I'm sure you have some links. ;)

I think Atkins Rotary is the only company still making kits for the rotary (under Camden Supercharges name). Check out the link I posted above. The 7" kit is the bolt-on one I believe (they also have larger 9" and 12" kits including ones for the 20B!). They have both an EFI and a Carb applicaiton and my plan was to pick up the carb'd version (it's cheaper!), but run some EFI throttle bodies (DCOE style as I'm pretty sure that is the carb flange on the kit). The hardest part (aside from the price) would probably be the throttle setup mechanically and the fuel/EFI setup (standalone) mechanically.
