Maff's STS2 Build

whats going on there in the middle, where the torque just disappears :p

when people say the 1.6 has got no mid-range torque, they mean it.
;)

makes me wonder what my 235k motor is making...i think i'd be jealous of your fancy-pants 98 hp. :( hopefully new plugs/wires and a Witchhunter injector cleaning will help.

LOL nice. To put it in perspective, Andy Hollis' STS2 car (with a built to spec motor) is putting down 120 in race trim. Makes my 98 (should be a couple more now with the header) look pretty weak...

sure wish i had a local Spec Miata specialist, and the money to pay him to build my motor. plus, you know, comparable driving talent. ;) 120whp is pretty impressive from an STS2 1.6L, but your numbers aren't bad considering the mileage.

I think you all need to move up to CSP with a 1.8 and stickies. ;)

1.6s rule, 1.8s drool! ;)

nah, but i do enjoy driving my miata on the weekends (there are also approx. zero CSP drivers in my region, but 10 STS2 drivers).

plus, getting an STS2 miata ready to run is easy:

1. drive to event
2. park
3. apply numbers

:D

Well, had the pleasure of running the car this last event.

After the first run my biggest complaint was the lack of turn-in. Then, it dawned on me that what I was experiencing was the delay from the power steering. I don't remember the last time I drove a Miata with power steering, lol.

Aside from Muff and I talking about upping the spring rates the car felt pretty good. It isn't as loose as I was expecting, and the lack of being able to position the car with the throttle mid-corner/exit was something that could really help the car. The only way I could get it to work was really "tossing" it into a corner to position the car in a few elements.

I think if you leave the power steering rack you should really consider the 205-40-16 RT 615s, that would help the turn-in response, and gearing to keep the power in the sweet spot better, and probably help the car "dance" a little more. I realize that entails buying new wheels as well, but it would also give you the option of running the RE-01s also.

The car has great potential to PAX really well, and is close with a few tweaks here and there.

Plans for next season (besides the usual maintenance and my little fuel issue...) boil down to:

700/450 (or some such ratio) springs
15x7.5s
RE-01Rs
And some finagling on the brakes.

Seeing you drive the car this weekend gave me a good idea of what the car's capable of, so that's pretty reassuring (driver's a lot cheaper to fix than the car ;)). I foresee a lot of seat time in my future

Next time I need to ride with you to see what you are doing. Alot of times it can be a simple little thing that can gain alot of time.

And if you quit making out with Luke that would help out even more.(ghey)

You already have the 15x7s, why not buy some 16x7.5 wheels so you can try the 205-45-16 RE-01Rs, and maybe have another set of the 195-50-15 RE-01Rs. Just doesn't seem to make much sense having 2 sets of 15s, unless they REALLY need to be on 7.5" rims. But at this stage of the game I don't see it making a difference. Plus, they will probably be heavier than the 15x7s you have now. Were you going to go with the Rota Slips?
