Larger Turbo?

:
2003.5 Mazdaspeed Protege
Has anybody installed a larger turbo on their MSP's or is the car not able to handle it? I know with proper engine management and money anything is entirely possible.

I've heard about the ION Turbo upgrade, what exactly is that, is it indeed larger?

Spool sells a turbo kit for the MSP. Not bad, but I rather go all out and get a t3/t4 instead of just the t3.

t3/t4 hybrid rocks. alotta powa! :)

lol, now that you got your answer, ur getting replys. dont ya just love that :p

you could always tell him to upgrade it....search is your best friend on the board....

Search would have been my best friend but when you type in larger or bigger turbo, you get about a million threads with a million replies to each one. Hence the 2 hours to find it.

So it's not really necessary to upgrade the turbo unless you want mad power (300 or so)?

Yeah, after 50 or so views, I just thought everyone was ignoring me because the question has probably been answered. Oh well, it took awhile but I found something.

Stormtrooper77 - there's 3 different stages of turbo upgrades we offer for the MSP.

"Stage 0" is to modify your stock turbo which includes a huge list of things, it's almost short of replacing it with a new one.

"Stage 1" is to replace your stock turbo with something larger and still bolt-on, based on the T28 turbo.

"Stage 2" is to replace your stock turbo with the GT28 aka "disco potato" turbo.

How much is the Disco Potato and is it harder to install and do you need alot of engine mods? what the psi and hp when done?

Do you have compressor and turbine map for the stock msp turbo?

Also, can you provide compressor and turbine maps for all 3 stages??? I can't really justify going to a different turbo without looking at the maps.

MSP Chris -

Stage 0 - good for up to ~275hp crank
Stage 1 - good for up to ~350hp crank
Stage 2 - good for over 400hp crank

PHILLY-ORANGE - Price isn't totally set yet, as we've still have to work out the cost of the installation kit to work on the MSP.

YuYuRena - the stock compressor map is a T25.

The stage 0 is a map similar to the T28.
The stage 1 is a T28 map but it's slightly modified.
The stage 2 has basically the same map as the HKS GT2835.

Actually our turbo upgrade package consists of a t3 or t3/t4. We pulled it of the market for a bit because we modified some things. However it will be back on our site soon. Its basically 3 thousand for the whole setup. This includes a new ceramic coated manifold, Garrett turbo (t3 or t3t4 any trim you wish), stainless oil lines, external wastegate, FMIC with plumbing, dumptube, downpipe and other items. Depending on the stage and trim turbo you select the kits are good for up to 500whp :)

This may be a retarded n00b question (yeah, that would be me), but how much would such a setup cost to install - rough ballpark?

orng_mazdaspeed - nope won't require another manifold unless you want to make even more power. They're direct bolt-on. The turbo upgrades are JUST turbo upgrades. The I/C kits are separate, so is our upcoming equal-length bolt-on manifold.

I have a question concerning the larger turbo upgrades. How can you get up to 500 hp in the msp? Does someone make some kind of fix for our weak ass trannys? I am wanting to up the boost in my msp very soon but am concerned about this weak tranny issue? Does anyone have any info on this?

ZoomingMSP Any car can have a large amount of modified horsepower. For example bigger turbo, supercherger, nitrous.. There are many variables that affect your cars abilities to handle this HP. The car has to be tuned, as well as have a strong engine, and the drivetrain has to be able to put that power to the wheels.

I believe our transmissions can take a beating. My bet would be 350 to the wheels with nitto's, is when the tranny would really start to faulter. ION what you think?

yea, I want to eventually upgrade my turbo but for now I'm just going to get a FMIC now the question is will I have to get a new FMIC if I was to get a new turbo?

To get 500whp you will need to build up the motor for it, you will need a new engine manahment system and you will need a beefier tranny:D
Our trannys can hold 250whp if they are not abused

Not with our setup...its compatable with a bigger turbo
