I live in manhattan kansas and there is some s*** goin on. all of the fuel stations are no longer selling 91 octaine. i was wondering if i could run 89 in my msp.
but all the 89 octaine here has E10. will e10 hurt my motor. i tried calling mazda
but talking to one of their customer support is like talking to a retard. they dont know s*** about the vehicles that their company produces.

I'll try to talk to a service manager here in KC to try and get an unofficial word from Mazda... you need to try and get something in writing from Mazda on the issue so this may require a trip to the local dealership...

That's a bad deal. You'd be able to run the 89 but I wouldn't want to do that for very long.

What is e10?

You would need a lot of octane booster to make your 91.

Is there anywhere close to you that you could go that has the 91?

um... wtf? does your city not have ANY classy vehicles?
Ottawa's getting more and more stations carrying 93 and 94 octane, now... it should be increasing, not decreasing.

e10 is ethanol gasoline (to my understanding)... I'm going to make that call I promised now.

edit* and no there aren't many high-end vehicles there, Manhattan is a college town (K-State Wildcats for the sports fans) in the middle of BFE. nothing but rolling hills of crap for miles. to get there you go to the edge of civilization and head west for about an hour...

p.s. you mean to tell me that the BP that is just on the outskirts of town isn't carrying 92 anymore? this sucks, I am never going back there again, my friends can walk it...

just talked to my service manager friend and he told me that we should NOT use ethanol based fuels. (he told me to use 'emphatical' language, so caps it is)

e10 will hurt the motor (according to him) and we shouldn't use it.

There is a dispute over ethanol and whether it is harmful or not, as there are some that claim it makes fuel burn colder. But IMO I would never run 89 in my car. Find a station that has 91 and make that you weekly stop. Or with this car, bi-weekly. haha

2 years ago this guy put 89 into his MSP and it would ping at high RPM.

I would contact a local Mazda dealership and get them to give you ideas as to what to do. if they try to tell you its okay then get them to give you a clearance and indemnification waiver saying that they approve your use of the fuel and that they accept responsibility to repair any damages it may cause...

p.s. have you checked Fort "whateveritis" to see if they aren't still carrying real car gasoline. I know they have had e85 for a long time but I can't imagine that they don't still have good gas as well...

i found 91

i had to drive to junction city to get fuel. (35 mile round trip) then after i did that i found that a diamond shamrock station here is not going to get rid of 91 because it is the best seller. but at 2.23 a gal its still a pain in the ass.
i found out that e85 has an octane rating of 115. i wish we could use that in our
cars. no more pinging

i was under the impression that all octanes had a 10% level of ethanol in them? i'll check the pump the next time i fill up, and snap a pic with my camera phone if they do, i could be very tired from the end of a long day at work and not thinking straight, but thats what i'm thinking right now :p...

If you don't have cats you could get some Xyelene at your local hardware store. Check out the paint section. It should be around $5. Attached is an excell spreadsheet I got from DiscreetSpeed that will calculate the octane rating when you just plug in the amounts of each type.

If you have cats it's bad to use this as it will fry them.
