Japanese RX-7 Vs U.S. RX-7???

Actually, plenty of companies have licensed the NSU patent for the Rotary. GM had both a 2 rotor and a 4 rotor concept Corvette.

Mazda is just the only one who stayed with it and made it marketable.

August 2002...

In 1999 they refreshed the front and rear fascia, and addressed the cooling problem. An upgraded ECU, and a more efficient running turbo, so the highest powered RX-7 is around 280. Prior to 1999 they are basically the same as US spec.

He doesn't know what he's talking about.

The only difference in the models we have here are that the 93's had a painfully stiff suspension. So stiff that in 94 softer spring rates were utilized, while still maintaining handling characteristics. The cooling and turbo issues were not addressed until 99 with the model refresh.

get a 99-02 RX-7!!!

Look for a stock Type R Bathrust, Type RZ or Spirit R. The later model japanese-market RX-7 don't have the rats nest, it was replaced with a very durable vacuum line block, they have upgraded ECU's, don't have a pre-cat (factory downpipe) so they don't retain as much heat, have upgraded intake, exhaust and turbos. Better suspension, wheels, interior, less weight, etc and are far more reliable than 93-95 US RX-7's.

Hmmm...(hmm)...Thanks for the info...the 'ol 7 just might be back on the list! I really want an FD but I can't deal with a problematic car at this time in my life (already had enough experience with that :( )

Stuff I found regarding the differences, hope this helps you out.

US rx7 was the series 6 (92-95)

series 7 and series 8 got 16 bit ecu upgrade compared to series 6. power in s8 is increased due to abradable turbo. That's all the difference I can see unless you're talking about RZ or the special spirit model. If you want some cool carwhy don't you look into the 180sx? that's a peppy car.

Yeah those spirit R's might cost you a few pennies. They come in the same titanium the MSP's do and have that ubermint red interior..not to mention are faster on a track than a R34..but hey! it's only 60k+

I've always liked Nissans...but being in Japan they seem too common...like modding Hondas in SoCal...I'm looking for something that's not so mainstream but still very potent ;)

What about the Mazdaspeed Atenza that's coming out here in the spring, Antoine? Also right now they're offering a special leather edition 8 - the Radiant Ebony Mica full leather RX-8 Type S Sport Prestige Limited? That would be a cool ride since they don't like leather here in JPN for some reason...

Nissan Skylines, WRXs, even the 7 might be "mainstream" sport cars here in JPN. So are Lancers. Just today I must have seen like 10 STi's running around... and I think used Altezza's are still overpriced.

I haven't seen that many S2000s around here - would that be an option?

If you decide to go european (i.e. importing a car to JPN), what about finding like a Mazdaspeed Protege and bringing it over here? Or a stick shift Protege5 and also bring over a turbo kit with it? That would definitely be non-mainstream but still be a potent ride. Guys here seem to go just for lowered looks and modified exhausts, but very few people are into actually putting on an aftermarket turbo onto a car or otherwise upgrading engine parts or even changing out a flywheel....

p.s. I would love to do that with my Protege5 - spend like 5k on upgrading it, then bring it over for another $10k and surprise the snot out of some kid in an automatic tranny WRX hehehe

Thanks for the feedback :D

The MS Atenza is a definite possibility especially by the time I would be ready to get a ride here...it might be in it's 2nd year by then and have the bugs worked out...

A new RX-8 can be pricey...I'd like to get something just slightly used or new for under 2,500,000 yen...I prefer the RX-7 body style over the 8's but the 8 is a fresh design...I'm also considering an older STi...did they make those in 2dr/coupe style?

I like the S2000...just wish it wasn't a Honda...but I wouldn't totally rule it out...:p

Yeah...the mainstream of modded cars is slammed vans and vip cars...but of the tuner types...I see a lot of silvias/180, older skylines, STi's, the occasional evo and a lot of family sedans with skyline or supra roots...

I think the only thing I'm sure about for now is that I want a "sports car"...as in a 2dr (coupe)...problem is I want a hard top...seems like most small nimble coupes are convertibles...

I'll be going that big "Auto Salon" type show in Osaka in a few weekends...have you been to either one (Tokyo or Osaka)?

Dude I almost forgot that Auto Salon was in Japan... thanks for reminding me. have to check the dates though...

FYI, the MS Atenza and RX-8 are both in the same price range, over 2,500,000 yen

Haven't seen that many of the new Z here. That's not a bad skyline to have, and its 2 drs.

As for 2 door STi's check out http://www.j-garage.com/4110.htm It looks there were 2 door models in '97 and '98. The hood vents on the older WRX's give them a mean look so that's why I like the older models. Just beware though of really used, modified cars - you want to make sure they didn't do a crappy job of replacing the suspension and steering wheel, you know?

Thanks for the info and useful link...That limited edition 1998 22B STi has really caught my attention but it's expensive and rare...I'm liking the "regular" '97-98 Sti's though...Also I can imagine some of these rides for sale have been totally reemed on and or have a history of late night drifting/racing/etc...I'll be looking for pampered ones...

I like the new z but I'm concerned about it's weight and that 6cyl (engine tax and gas?)

I wonder how much insurance and tax would be on the Sti's and RX-7's...?

Auto insurance for used cars here is funny. I'm in a plan right now where you can set how much money you want back in case the car is totalled (by some stupid idiot - lots of them here in Shiga - ignores traffic laws, signs and lights destroys your car). The higher the amount you want back, the higher the premium. I think Shiga is expensive, Osaka might be cheaper, I don't know. Depends on your age also, like in the U.S. Insurance is probably cheaper here than in NJ though. NJ sucks when it comes to insurance.

As for taxes, you'll pay more for the extra engine volume and weight of the car (that's why turbos are so popular in JPN) but the WRX's are 2 liter engines. I think I have to pay like total maybe 6 or 70,000 yen every 2 years at inspection time, plus any maintenance items they need to take care of at that time.

btw, the 4wd on a subaru comes in real handy when it snows, since they don't plow nor salt the roads here...

The S2000 is an amazing car, and should be relatively reliable (much more so than an RX7). 2 doors, rwd, 6spd convertible, shortblock 9000rpm engine. so tasty!

btw, i think comptech has a supercharger kit for it. imagine rolling around in a supercharged S2000 in japan!

Why not get an S15???? I know if I lived in Japan I would get a car I can't have in the U.S. Skyline, Evo 3-6 or the S15. Just my opinion. By the way have you checked out gt.net? They usually have some nice ass cars on that site but I can't remember where in Japan its located
