Is this a good price?

Talked to a dealer today about pricing the CX-5. He gave me the following bottom line offer:

Grand Touring FWD + Tech package: $28,700 + dealers fees and tax = total out the door price of $30,900

Touring FWD + Tech package + Moon/Bose package: $26,500 + dealers fees and tax = total out the door price of $28,400

Is this a good deal or should I keep going? Keep in mind this is for the front wheel drive. Also registration fees are NOT included in the above prices.

Pricing could be different per region/state/city so what may be a good price for someone might not be the best price for you (or vice versa). The best thing to do is to deal with multiple internet sales managers for different dealerships via email and see who will offer you the best price.

That is a far better price than I was offered from my local dealer. Bottom line - they sent me an "offer" of $30959 +tax, title, license and dealer fees for a FWD GT w/tech (boom02). Ridiculous.

This was the original email I sent to the sales person I spoke with previously. Obviously I was just testing the waters here, but I found the response laughable.

"Hi Rene -

I wanted to thank you for staying in touch with me regarding the Mazda CX-5 that you have called me about a few times. I apologize that I haven't called you back yet, but I hadn't yet been ready to purchase one.

At this point I am somewhat torn as the 2014 models with the 2.5 engine are supposed to be available in January. As far as I have seen the pricing hasn't yet been released though, but I am seriously thinking about waiting unless the incentives on a 2013 make it worthwhile.

As you had stated in your last voice mail that there were some deals running right now at Jim Click, so I thought I would check with you about what they might be. I am primarily interested in a FWD GT w/ tech, but it isn't possible to tell which may have the tech package when looking online.

Hope to hear from you,

Chris"

And the response:

"Hi Chris,

We have a Grand Touring with the tech package that we will sell you for $30,959.00 plus taxes, title and Doc fee plus 0% x 36 months. Vehicle comes with Tint, door edge guards and maintenance for life.

Rene"

Keep in mind that this dealer website says "All new cars come with FREE maintenance for life!", and yet when you go to the lot they have an addendum that adds $995 for this "lifetime free service". Not quite sure how this is free...

^Yikes. Well mines a little better than that, which is good lol. I still wonder if I should jump on it?

I should mention the GT is Pearl White.

It's the middle of the month - if you're looking for the best price you wait until the last few days.

This is "car purchasing 101".

For a FWD GT with the Tech package $30,900 out the door in NY is not a bad deal at all. You're saving a lot of money. If you were to buy it at MSRP just with taxes and no dealer fees included you would be looking at $32,500+ it is a good deal as long as they don't change up their story on you. By getting the GT over Touring you're basically paying more for leather and 19" wheels which is very well worth it in my opinion, I have it and very happy with it. Are you sure NY tax is included in that TD price? damn seems to good to be true. I would take it.

I'm in Upstate NY, so tax is only 7.1% here. MSRP for my config is: $29,665...so really it's not even $1,000 off MSRP. Doesn't seem THAT great, does it?

I was calculating NYC tax but still with 7.1 tax you're looking at $31,771+lets say $300 dealer fees that's like $32,000. Still better than many like me who bought the GT at MSRP during that whole 19" wheel shortage. Even though I hear the MSRP was raised about $500 since then.

31 Seems about average countrywide for AWD+Tech. I paid 30800 in Washington State with Tax

That seems like a pretty decent price to me. Probably pretty close to invoice.

how much do they charge for the tint and door edge guards? Mazda doesn't have any actual door edge guards, just the clear film so those must be aftermarket. Those and body side moldings are a very typical item for dealers to add to generate more markup. Those and doubling the price for the tint are also popular. They have an outside place come in and put the stuff on all the cars and then charge a huge markup.

See if they will drop the free service thing (unless you want it) and cut the price of the tint in half and the door edge guards to 1/3 what they are asking. Also watch for small print in the free service where they require that you pay for some required items or the service has to be done at almost exact mileage numbers. I remember one dealership I worked at hearing the service people telling customers all the time "oh, you are 100 miles past the miles for that service so it isn't free any longer" or "that service isn't due for 80 miles so you can't get it done yet".

The door edge guard is only clear film. The tint is being charged at $399, which is how much it would cost to have ceramic heat rejection tint installed on the entire car. Being that I am in Arizona, I don't want their crappy tint anyway - I really want the heat rejection type. Basically I am unwilling to pay them for something I am going to have removed and replaced.

The exact wording on the service is this:

"We proudly offer Maintenance for Life program This means you get Free lube, oil and tire rotation every 5,000 miles as long as you own the vehicle. We are dedicated to making your car-buying experience memorable to earn your business today and again in the future."

Which I still feel isn't free if you are pre-paying for it. Obviously all these items are negotiable, and are there to make you feel like you are getting a "deal" when you pay full MSRP, but below their full sticker price. I just haven't really decided if I want to wheel and deal on this, or if I want a 2014.

Thanks for the info :)

I was just quoted $27,122.04 + TTL for a CX5 Grand Touring with no additional options. Just wanting some input on whether or not this is a good offer or not. Thanks.

For starters, the idea is to determine what YOU want to pay for the vehicle and make an offer to THEM. Sounds like you've got it backwards.

I did start with what I wanted to pay, and $27,122.04 + TTL is what they came back with. There should always be a gap between what someone wants to pay and what the dealership will sell it for. I am just trying to close that gap as much as possible which is why I was asking for input on whether or not the dealer's offer was good or not. Thanks.

It's a pretty good price I think - right at invoice from what I understand.

gotta love the modern definition of Free. Since you don't pay for it at the time you get it then it must be free.
