Hey there guys. my name is Johnny and i recently got my hands on a mazda 3 hatchback and im loving it but i need your help. Bare with me i new to the whole car scene but i find mods to be very fun.. im very much a do it yourself kind of guy so ive been a forum ***** looking to fix my car up myself for cheap.. well anyways to the problem at hand.. I made a intake.. just steel piping and pvc hose clamps.. im sure some if not all of you guys have tried or read into this mod.. Its very fun but i hit a bump.. i removed the air box and resinator or whatever its called.. installed the intake and its all 2 1/2" piping.. started the car it idled for maybe 1-2 sec then died.. if i give it gas to try to keep it going it bogs then dies.. i was told by a very car savvy amigo that it maybe because i used a 3" pipe piece for the MAF sensor.. it was some adapter piece i found at kragen... anyways he said the sensor is set to read in a 2 1/2" pipe like the stock size.. anybody have some insight on my problem? i no i can just buy an intake but like i said im really loving the do it yourself mods .. and also anybody have and other mod suggestions you found fun? im open to anything.. i believe theres not better way to understand your own car but by working on it yourself..

I give you props for wanting to make your own mods, but I don't think these cars are the right car to be experimenting and taking risks. Hope you you fix your problem though.

Thank you man i appreciate it and i appreciate the advice but know i definitely do have my limits.. if i feel that something is def. out of my realm of possibility ill leave it to the pro's for sure... but this also wasnt really a risk of any sort. my only risk was having the intake not work. for the moment i just installed the stock box without the resignator.. should i install that to or will that be ok for now? and any ideas on the intake?

The diameter of the MAF housing has to be the same as that in the OEM airbox. A DIY intake is very difficult to do properly for this reason.

You also have to consider about air turbulence in the MAF housing.

You should be okay with out the resonator. I have no clue with your intake though. sorry

"You also have to consider about air turbulence in the MAF housing. " what exactly is air turbulence? confused on that little bit.. but thank you guys very much your a lot of help...

There needs to be laminar flow (straight through) across the MAF sensor. Turbulence is when the flow gets obstructed, swirls around a bit in the MAF housing, etc. Even the Mazdaspeed CAI had this problem, and it was designed by professionals. They had to add a flow straightener to get it to not throw CELs. I would really find a different DIY project. This particular item (the intake) is too critical to proper operation.

haha no i didnt put it backwards.. theres only one way to put it.. and i see what you mean about the turbulence i definitely would of had some of that the way i connected it all... cool well im ready to give up just yet.. im goin to take what you all said in consideration and put it to the test again.. ill keep you updated if any of you care to know how it works out.. Thank you much youve all been a lot of help

Go to home depot and get a 2 1/2 inch 1foot section of sewer pipe and see if that works better. You may get lucky and it will have the same flow "with the ridges in it" as the stock rubber mazda one. Or make up your own air straightner by glueing some toothpicks in an x pattern inside the tube and see if that works.(bolt)
