2001 Mazda MP3 #140
I'm so freakin excited!!!! :D I received my cams from Mazda Motor Sporst today, but I have to wait till thursday to have them installed. I'll be sure to keep everyone informed. Now that I have the Exhaust system, intake, and cams I plan on having the car dynoed, but not before the new year. I will scan and post the dyno sheet. Until then I'll just have to relay how the car feels...

COOOOOL!
I plan on I/H/E for right now but depending on how you guys like the cams I might go for them later.

You get the exhaust cam too? I got the FS-ZE Intake cam but no exhaust cam, I am thinking of getting one though.

Got 'em both and having installed tomorrow. Can barely sleep!!! I'll post to let ya'll know the deal.

Well, it's done... took the guys about 5 hours and it cost $265. Not a bad deal considering it was at the dealership. Although, they added a line to the service work order about the effects of the parts being unknown and how they would not be responsible for any affect the mod might have on the "driveability" of the car. Besides that, I'm happy with the whole deal... the cams deffinitely add a bit of punch. It felt as if I had lost a little torque when I installed the CAI exhaust, but it's right back up there again. Anyhow, I will be putting the car on a dyno, but not until after the holidays... must let wallet recover. I will post with results then.

Did you get the Mazda Speed ones or the ones that are already shaved? I'm not even sure which are which. Let us know. BTW, SR Motorsports is saying that the intake cam is worth 12hp and the exhaust cam is worth 10 hp. I know that Mazda Motorsports was saying that they didn't know about the exhaust cam yet. Hopefully SR is right and the two are worth 22 hp at the crank.

Coolhand: Thanks for updating us. How do you feel the differences? Can you give us more detials? A huge different? or only a little gain like the CAI does???

I am jealous ;)

Coolhand,

what do you mean about loosing torque when they installed the CAI exhaust? I want also want to be informed because i'm thinking about ordering both the cams. Please inform me. thank you.

 Well here's the skinny... sorry aboput the mistype earlier. After I installed the CAI, it seemed like I gain a little bit of torque, but after the exhasut install, it seemed that I had lost some torque. Now with the Cams it feels like I'm up on torque again. There is a deffinite difference, especially since I was driving a 1.6 Protege rental all day before I got my car back. The biggest difference is in the higher RPM bands... there's a "punch" in power. I'm definitely in 1st gear for a shorter time, it get me to redline quickly... but I can't tell you that it's a HUGE difference. We'll have to wait for the Dyno to be done. Believe me, I'm anxious as hell to see where I stand to, especially after having put $1200 into the car.

The Bosal exhaust screws with the torque? :( That's not cool. But how does it sound? Would you recommend holding off on exhaust until I had enough money to get that and the cams at the same time?

Just looking for a little guidence. :D

Okay... one more time, remeber I'm only basing this on what I "feel" in the car. Withe just the CAI on, I was chirping the tires at 2800rpm, when stock I was doing it at 3000rpm, so it "felt" like I had more torque. I repeat... "felt" like it. When I put on the exhaust, tire chirping point went back up to 3000rpm. Now with the cams it's definitely torquier. But I don't have any proof yet... I don't want to start a frenzy. I'm going out of town for the holidys and when I get back, I promise that I will have the car dynoed so that we can have some proof. I'm also getting Digi Cam for X-mas, so I will post MPEG of car so you can hear the exhaust. IMO it sounds great!!!

mand they are Not smog legal, if i put them in will i pass inspection, and do you get a cell light or did you move the senser pass the cat ?

No, supposedly they are not smog legal, but in Florida I don't have to worry about that, emisiions testing was done away with. There has been no CEL light as of yet. I've already put 100 miles on the car since the swap, and no problems... yet, although I don't forsee any. As for the sensors, they are still in place, the only cat removed was the 2nd one, mid exhaust. There are no sensors involved with that one.

Sounds cool. I am planning to get exactly the same stuff you got, the Injen CAI and cams. By it would take me a long time to save up $1200.
I am looking forward to the dyno. Thanks for everything, coolhand.

ok, cool i'm gona get the cams in few months maybe 2, what about the timing did you have to get a controlel or some thing, cuz dosent the tyming change if you change the cams ?

Hey I'm no mechanic/technician... that's why I took it to the dealer to have the swap done, so pardon my ignorance, but I have no idea whther timing was affected or not. I do know that they had to do something with the spacers on the cams itself so that it sat in properly, or at least that's what they told as to why they took so long to do it (5hours). Considering the amount of time, I think I got away easy paying only $265. I had called before going to get a quote so they honored it.

I NEED those cams.... gotta wait though..
wanna see the results too...
