I present to you, the Passion5

'cause I'm going to do that myself ;) I actually pondered that looking back at my pictures, I figured that I would gradually remove more material until it swung into place. For guys in the future though I was hoping to find a compatible shaft. Looking over at onlinemazdaparts.com I found the following:

Shaft, 626, mx-6, 6 cyl, manual trans 00-02
Shaft, 626, mx-6, 6 cyl, manual trans 98-99
Shaft, 626, mx-6, 6 cyl, manual trans 96-97
Shaft, 626, mx-6, all, 6 cyl, manual trans 1994
Shaft, 626, mx-6, 6 cyl, Manual trans 95-97

From this, I'm willing to bet that all shafts from 95-97 are the same and that the 98-02 shafts are hardly different but the site wont give me part #s so I can only assume there are 3-4 variations of shafts from the 626: '94, 95-97, 98-99, 00-02. My junkyard is usually running over with 626's so i'll see if I can't drop by and at least take a look. I went through my reciepts last night and my shaft cost me a whopping $17 from a '93 Ford Probe GT.

ah gotcha. and i still cant find the reciept for the half shaft i bought sorry

Forzwin,

MadBiker here - remember the exhaust part you shipped to me to Japan? Haha, it's going on my car this week.

Don't remember if I told you I am sub'd to this thread - Awesome! Anyway I hope I can be of some help here - check out this site:

They have part nos and drawings that seem to be detailed enough to show differences in the shaft brackets (2 hole vs. 3 hole etc.). I can't believe I didn't find this site sooner myself.

I also saw a thread on mazda626 dot net that indicated that there are indeed different versions of the very bracket you seem to be struggling with.

Good luck on the KLZE install. Should be a fun car when you're done!

Forzwin, if you can find a JDM MX-6 intermediate shaft it should bolt up without any modification. I bolted my tranny to the motor this weekend and got a perfect fit. Though I have the JDM Eunos8 KL.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys, been working like a dog since february and haven't been able to put much effort into the protege lately. The past two weekends have been filled with me putting my Z back together as it has decided to start falling apart on me. :(

I did get my new master cylinder installed, just need to finish bleeding brakes and that will be done. I NEED to hit the junkyard this saturday and find another shaft/power steering pump, this is getting rediculous being this close for so long...hopefully something worthwile comes this weekend.

Lewis,

Thanks for the insight but looking back at some of my pics your half-shaft shares a strong resemblance to what I'm using...which I forgot to update that I have determined that short of cutting off the flange and rewelding, will not make it onto the motor. I kept cutting little by little into the flange to try and make it fit but it inevitably made contact in the middle of the flange so I called a quits.

If you're doing brakes I should swing by your place to do mine as well lol. I have rotors pads and lines that are going on Sunday since Amy and I will be in fredricksburg all day Saturday.

Are you thinking Saturday or Sunday? Hit me up if you're serious about coming down. I'll be working on the Protege all day Saturday and then probably focus in my Z on Sunday.

My schedule may be a little whack either day but shoot me pm.

Just an update for those still following my snail's pace progress. I found a 2 bolt shaft at the junkyard the weekend before last and took that home to test fit...survey says! FAIL. Same issue as before the flange looks like it's sitting a little high and will not rotate into place. I noticed a pattern with the two and I'm almost thinking that the issue lies with the transmission. I'm using a MX3 v6 trans and there is a casting mark near where the intermediate shaft goes in where the block and trans do not line up. I must stress that the trans bolted onto the block with no issues so I don't think there is anyway that it is misaligned.

Now I'm on the hunt for a MX3 shaft and am seriously considering welding one up like iekuniprotege did. Actually I tried that with my MIG welder, but couldn't get the proper penetration and the flange fell off with a few whacks of the hammer.

And the plot thickens...

You need to get that weld HOT. Minimum of 220 VAC welder is required to properly weld a driveshaft. You also need to grind the edge of the cut at an angle so the weld will go into the shaft.

If you are using a 110VAC welder, you will not get the penetration.

:p Thanks for the kind words. I tried really hard with 110v lol. I did chamfer the edges, even tried welding each edge individually and then welding the beads together. My buddy says I need it tig'd, that even a 220v mig won't get it where I need to be. Regardless, i don't own either, so I'll need to take it to a shop. (womp, womp)

...and I knew mention of the word penetration would probably do wonders for this thread.

It can be done with a MIG if you have the settings on the welder set right. With a solid steel shaft, it will take a lot more heat to get it to penetrate the hardened steel. The TIG just does a cleaner job of it.

Still popping in for sure... awesome progress if you glance back to the first few pages! :) Not for the weak hearted!

I am gay, and let me tell u, I have not seen a gayer car (and trust me, i see a bunch) than that... im surprised it didn't come with those eye lashes they sell lol.. but for 500 dollars I would have gotten it, it would have been hard to say no, please keep post pictures of your progress

Honesty at it's best. lol. I guess for $300 it was a no brainer eh? Truthfully I knoew I had to have it when I saw it, I just let it end up that way, P5's are really nice cars and what I found was just horrid.
