How many Rotary Nutz do we have here?

yah, let me tell you something about that...I have replaced the turbo system vaccuum hoses on a 3rd gen (fun). There were about 90 of those little suckers and about 20 were pinched closed. The dealer wanted all kinds of money just to diagnose the boost probs we were having. Being the car savvy girl I am, I told my (then) bf we can tackle it ourselves. He gathered tech info on the hose job (laugh) and we had the car in pieces for a week, but dammit we did it! and that's all it needed! I don't know how many of you guys have taken a 3rd gen engine apart, but there is a rack of solenoids that run the turbo system (10 if I remember right). Everyone of these solenoids have crutial duties in making the system run properly. We replaced the stock rubber hoses with hi-temp silicone clear hoses (easy to see if they are pinched).

Now THAT's my idea of fun...felt so good to feel her boost again...
I miss her (k)

thats why real men and woman* say fooeey to that sequential and possibly non-sequentail s*** and go single. take those 70 or 80 some little ass lines and cut out about 90% of them and take it down to single digits. quite a bit easier to deal with if you ask me. plus it makes the engine bay look so much prettier seeing a nice big single in there instead of that mass of 2 smaller ones.

as far as that pictures goes of the flame thats a secret for only my friend and i to tell. theres actually a video of it that he's got somewhere. i don't think its hosted anymore though.

you were hangin out of the hatch, weren't you? (rofl)

The new rotary doesn't have rounded "triangels" :)
They're kinda funky shaped...
yeah it does, i think you're just seeing a cutaway view of the rotor, in which case it does look funny.

Yea, the 3rd gens from '93-'95 weren't the best. The apex seals were too thin and a lot of the engines didn't get past 50K mi.

The newer J-spec ones are awsome. :)
it wasnt really the apex seals that were a problem, moreso the twin turbos. rotarys run hot as is, and the added heat from the turbos, combined with the precat...bad news. that and mazda never really trained enough techs to diagnose and fix rotary engines...without people to diagnose them, problems would go unattended to...then boom! blown apex and bad reputation. you cant blame a tech for not knowing what to do, when the company didnt train them for it.

rotaries can be very reliable with proper care, there are a few n/a guys on rx7club.com that have gone way over the 250k mark.

2mm apex seals are fine if you get your system tuned right. 3mm seals are more of a cushion for poor tuning.

that picture was taken at speed with the dudes sister/gf/wife hanging out of the hatch. at the end of the video you can hear her say "get me the hell outta here!"

yes i spend A LOT of time on rx7club.com...i need a life.

That's odd Kep0ne, cause my dad's an RX-7 specialists and got training from Mazda many years ago on them...

a year ago(in august 2001) we had to go to Columbia MO to help a dealership fix a 3rd gen...it was really messed up. Engine wouldn't go above 3K rpm and turbos were spinning at full at the much but it wouldn't go. Sounded really bad too. Probably an engine control problem, I think that my dad told the mechanic that, we had to go home. I don't really remember cause I was sitting in the RX-7 most of the time. :D

well of course they trained people on them, but just not enough. try to find a mazda dealer now that KNOWS WHAT THEY'RE DOING...chances are you'll have to drive a long way.

there are mazda techs who really know what they're doing, but some just dont.

so i thuroughly enjoy having Dave and KDR as close as it is. then again probably by this weekend the car will be gone and i won't care anymore. it was nice being special for a little while.

Don't we know that Kep0ne...out of the 5 mechs at my dad's dealership(Lou Fusz Mazda/Subaru), only 2 can really fix the hard stuff, my dad and this Don guy...the rest really suck...They can fix some stuff but RX-7s and Millenia Ss are out of thier league. Same with most of the other cars too for that matter. My dad's Shop Forman, so he has to help the others with cars, while working on his own jobs. Most of his own jobs were other mechs come-backs or screw ups.

I'm gonna be a Mazda Master Tech too, I already know too much but I have to go to Ranken to get the ASE sertification and Master status stuff...

yeah...my car should never see the inside of a shop again, at least not for mechanical work. ive made a vow to do all work to my fc by my damn self.

i second that because of those oh so qualified peopel like junior here's father. way to many horror stories. so speaking of his father is anybody else tired of hearing about how great he is? just curious

Mr TJ I was simply stating facts, you don't have to read it if you don't want to but I guess you do so go right ahead.

well when just about every post has something about hot great your dad is in it it gets anoying. your dad fixes cars for a living for a major automotive company. as swell as that is we don't need to keep hearing stories of how he comes to the rescue to the other helpless people that work with him. if he knows a thing or 2 about the rotory engine, great. the more the merrier. if he's a mustang man ,great as well but don't keep posting about how your living your life through what your father does. my father is a great carpenter (thats not just my opinion either) but i'm not posting on some wood working forum if there is such a thing about how marvelous some of the pieces he crafts are.

Alright alright I get it...

I'm not living my life through him either. Beyond the mechanical aspect, he doesn't really do anything with Mazda. I'm much different.

But one day I will become a master tech too. Or better...like head of Mazda NAO. :D
