ahhh(shocked)
i just bought some headers off of ebay for my 2003 protege5, i noticed something was smelling like burnt plastic - and tonight i got home from work, opened the hood and MY HEADERS WERE GLOWING BRIGHT ORANGE!!!!!
AHHHH(pissed)
i know that this isnt normal, is it?
what can i do!?!?!?
(ughdance) (ughdance) (ughdance)

o.O what brand is your header?

The smell is usually normal on a new header from the oil burning off. I hope you cleaned off any finger prints because if not, it'll be there forever.

wow.. umm what headders did you get? The burning smell is usualy oil from hands burning off.. hope you cleaned yours before you turned the key otherwise they'll be scared for life (unless.. you power wash it)

oh i forgot to mention, the headers are wrapped with header wrap....
are they too hot? - hence the glowing bright orange (right where they all come together)
still breaking in maybe?

the headers are made by tsudo

Remove the wrap. It is not needed and will cause heat fractures.
+1 ... Header wrap is a band-aid. Not to mention that 10X out of 10, it looks like ass (my opinion).

yup thats them.....yay for cheap headers!
i guess the wrap is coming off tomorrow, hopefully that will save them before its too late...
I think that wrap was used to prevent scratches on the headder tbh, and...this part really gets me..
mod needed for installation on a 1.8L protege.
the EGR valve on the 1.8 and 2.0 are completely different. the 1.8 have a male EGR valve, while the 2.0 has a female EGR Valve connector. so the Tsudo header that we have, has a male connector, this does not work with the 1.8 male EGR valve. you need to purchase a 5/8 flared valve coupler to connect both male connectors. (can be purchase at a local plumping supply store.
how silly.. the EGR valves on the 1.8 and 2.0L engines are the same.. I'm living proof.

I've seen good results hitting burned in prints on SS with Scotch-Brite pads. Permanant solution is ceramic coating. You can go Jet-Hot http://www.jet-hot.com/, or you may find a local powder-coater that does high-temp coatings. Gratuitous underhood shot:

thats sexy....
i can get my headers scotchbrighted and powdercoated at work (haha yay for being an aircraft mechanic)
should have know that wraping cheap headers would end badly....

thanks for all the quick help!
im going to unwrap them in the morning
(good thing they didnt somehow catch on fire...)

Well it has nothing to do with wrapping cheap headers. The wrap really isn't good for any header. Even Tony at AWR says not to use the wrap on his header and those are made of some good metal.

ok
took the wrap off
went for a drive
STILL GLOWING!
what could it be
not getting enough air or fuel for cooling?
