Help! Question about turbo hesitation?

Alright, I'm not sure if I should call it 'hesitation' or what, but...lately, I've been having problems boosting. I thought it was random....like 1/2 the time I could, and 1/2 the time I couldn't.

Basically, sometimes I'll be driving and it will start boosting...or trying to, and the car will just...hesitate REALLY bad, and I won't boost at all it seems. This has also caused my car/engine to SHAKE pretty violently. If I continue to accelerate (stay in 'boost'), then it'll keep stuttering and shaking and it feels very uncomfortable....if I let off, it's fine again, but only if I don't boost. I've come to the conclusion that this shaking is what caused the vibra-mount on my Injen intake to break. (See: http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showthread.php?t=123635076&highlight=vibra-mount)

At first I was completely stumped. I tried resetting the computer, and it actually seemed to help a fair amount....(I never did when installing the intake :() That's where I am now. Everything's BETTER, but I think it's still having some trouble. But....it also seems like the temperature outside could be affecting it, which should NOT be happening, correct?

For instance, almost every morning on the way to work, when it's cool....I can now boost fine everyday. Sometimes in the afternoon or evening...it seems like I just can't boost. Again, it shouldn't have anything to do with the temperature, but...it seems like it is sometimes.

Anyway...the only mod I have is the intake, and if I need to, I'll put the stock box back on and take it into Mazda...but I would REALLY like some help here if anyone's got some to give.

It lags sometimes...just plain can't boost...and it has caused severe shaking.
Thanks in advance!

I'd vote for the temperature causing heatsoak. Upgrade the side mount.
That's the MSP for ya.

That's what I've been thinking....but I haven't heard of many people not being able to boost just because it's hot outside. I guess it sorta makes sense though...

I plan on doing the FMIC eventually...just seems weird that this is happening, especially at only 15k miles. Thanks for the input though....anyone else?

That might just be the typical hesitation i think we've all gotten at sometime or another with the MSP...you could get the computer reflashed at a dealer which will advance the timing or get some EMS and tune it out...I noticed that the more mods I put on my car the less frequent the hesitation becomes and EMS + a good tune will completely rid you of the problem

Not sure...thought of that myself, but I don't know a whole lot about it.
And the fact that it didn't happen at all, then it just started happening all the time....that was just weird.

It seems to be doing better now though, ever since I reset the ECU. Maybe that's all I needed to do the whole time.....

Fuel cut sounds like it could be logical but I'd still have it flashed if you haven't had it done yet. I had some crazy bad hesitation until I got mine flashed.

its most definately not fuel cut. It is the hestitation that most msp's including mine experience. the best thing to do is to get some kind of ems like crashkelly said. I know that split second makes a controller that can be used that is msp specific and also dsmconvert here on the forum has something similar. do some research on those. Also temperature has everything to do with how a car runs. The cooler the air that gets into the intake the better the car will perform.

my msp is all stock and it experiences the same thing. I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and this thread answered my question. Mine also seems to do it in the evening.

the 'not boosting when hot' thing isn't entirely true. If you had/have a boost gauge hooked up, you would see your normal ~6 PSI reading, however, due to the tiny SMIC stock, it doesn't feel like boost at all. Driving with the stock interwarmer in texas summers sucks. I can't wait to buy an FMIC so that my car doesn't feel like a ford festiva.

Haha.. I like that. It's not much better in Mississippi either. That's why I just ordered the Upgraded SMIC from **********.

I have this same problem. My msp runs awesome at night or first thing in the morning (when it's cold). It feels like fuel cut, but I'm only boosting 8psi. I haven't had my car flashed. I've heard if you're over stock boost the flash isn't the answer. But then again I've also heard as long as you're not over 10psi the flash will work. Seens like a lot of different opinions regarding this topic. Are you boosting over stock? You say it totally took care of the hesitation problem?

i've also been having the same problem. my car has been flashed, but long before i did any modifications. i'm running stock boost with an injen CAI and GHL full turboback. mine also seems to occur more in the afternoons when it gets really hot out. i know it isn't fuel cut. that happened all the time during the winter, so i was really looking forward to some warmer weather, but now i get this crap. it feels like hesitation, but just amplified a whole lot. my boyfriend drives a stock MSP and he gets a small amount of heistation around 4K, but it's nothing like what i get. normally, if i'm heavy on the accelerator if feels pretty normal all the way until i shift, but if i give it a little more gas about half way through the gear it starts bucking like crazy. also, sometimes when i shift at anything over or around 4K the car reacts really strangely. like when i let off the gas and put in the clutch it seems like the RPMs shoot up for a split second. other thing is that sometimes when i'm accelerating in the afternoon i can hear the turbo spooling, but it just feels like there is absolutely no power whatsoever. any suggestions other than an expensive ECU upgrade?

I had the hesitation problem too, and it sorta baffled me, good thing I noticed it when I did because I had a look and found that the intercooler fan relay wires had been sliced by the fan...coulda been really costly!

The more mods I put on mine the less I have the problem...Intercooler upgrade is a big plus...I almost never have any hesitation and if i do its very very little turbulence in 3rd gear, but its not like when it was stock and bucked so bad it destroys the motor mounts. EMS is definately the quick fix, but if you dont want to go that route keep making your MSP breathe more quantites of cooler air... I'm at 9-10 psi with rare hesitation. It took some time and money to get to where I am at now, but it runs great, very smooth, and very little lag. I love the MSP even though it requires so much tweaking.:)

while pulling away from a light today fairly aggresively, the msp had severe power loss as the rpm rose. people have mentioned bucking issues but there there was no bucking, it just felt as if i had no boost (or even like being in the mountains with normal aspiration) and the car was barely accelerating. this has never happened before to any degree and it is still all stock. it was very hot today but no more than many previous days. after a mile or so it seemed to be back to normal. i stopped somewhere shortly after and when i started it back up a few minutes later it had a slightly strange starting sound.

If youve recently had any idling issues id say maybe youre on the way to a fouled spark plug...all of a sudden i had some major issues with the way my car was running and then I noticed the idle was also really inconsistent after puttin in some new NGK sparks it purrs like a kitten and runs nicely (i went one step colder with the platinum plugs however, which ive heard might be worse than stock but ive had very good luck with them)
