Headlights!

uhh.... what are you talking about? the P5 headlights look NOTHING like those pics!

Actually, I think it bothers oncoming drivers. I get flashed by a lot of people when driving on the highway with my low beams on. Always have since I bought this car. And the lights are adjusted properly. My theory is that it appears to them that I am flashing my lights at them when my car is reacting to small bumps in the road, and the non-existant cutoff of my lights appears to be moving up and down, making it appear that I am flashing my lights.
Ha, I know exactly what you mean by that. I think it's cool how the suspension reacts.

here's what GOOD headlights are supposed to be:
1st pic... my headlights using osram hyper 65/70 watt bulbs
2nd pic... european "P5" H7 headlights (stock bulbs).. something we should've got to begin with!

Is the first pic a P5? More importantly, is that the H7 Hyper "Race" bulb made by Osram?

BTW, I have NO cutoff at all. Even with the brightest of bulbs (Osram Silverstar) it's not noticeable.

No, sedan: you can tell by the antenna. That means H4s.

The cutoff is determined by the quality of the optics (reflector design, filament location), not the brightness of the bulbs.

Edwin, are you running those (slightly overwattage) bulbs off the stock wiring harness or did you install a relay kit?

hmmm! that confirms my suspicions that the JDM/EDM headlights that look just like the USDM Protege5 headlights are in fact better. Do you know if it's just a different cap thing in front of the bulb or a totally different reflector?

different reflector

nothing to suspect with the EDM headlights to begin with! they are required to have that form of beam pattern from the headlights! the USDM s*** was created purely for marketing reasons because there was a fair amount of people bitching about the sharp cutoff in some headlights (such as the sedan ones)

the high beams are also better... it uses an H1 bulb instead... what's cooler is, it has a city light (parking light) inside the high beam reflector area because using amber parking lights (especially in combination with the turn signal) is illegal outside of north america

I'd still love to get my hands on those black (03 only) headlights... but damn are they ******* expensive (due to the manual leveling motors built in also)!

Are there EDM headlights without the leveling motors? I understand the purpose of the motors, but 800 a piece for headlights is nearly twice the retail price for the canadian headlights, that's hard to justify since we're talkin more than 4x the cost of the usdm headlights.

I did know about the city lights, that's really pimp. So on the euro lights there's a white city light, and the amber only comes on for turn signal (probably a single filament bulb)? Very interesting indeed. I wanted to get some LED cluster retrofits I saw before that did a white light and amber for turn signal.. would achieve pretty much the same effect but would just use the turn signal location in the headlight to do it.

If there was a way to source just the reflectors that would be so uber awesome, but I wouldn't expect that level of parts granularity from any car company.

"P5" style ones? no

argh I'd write a letter to my senators but there are more pressing issues in this nation right now.

I still wonder why the US lighting laws are so lazy, why didn't they follow suit when Europe tightened up regulations?

i want the lights with the city lights in them. it looks SOOOO badass. i remember seeing a picture a lil while back of them, and i was like "i want them"

US law making philosophy, especially automotive safety related is very different from European ones... basically if there isn't any dead bodies, it's "safe" Also there's the issue of the NIH syndrome... "the stuff we invented is better than their's" regardless of when it was invented... plus the fact that the big 3 b**** about how much more it'll cost them money if the lighting regulations were tightened up... you can say it's nonsense because making 2 different types of headlights (RHT and LHT legal for all countries depending on which road type used) for one vehicle is much cheaper than 3 (RHT, LHT, and DOT)... guess what? they don't care because they sell a s*** load of their bad cars here and hardly any overseas (because it's s***, no one outside of north america wants them other than pure novelty reasons)... so as far as the economics of the status quo is concerned, the additional expense at making ECE lighting equipment is offset by the huge quantities of the CHEAP ass DOT s*** that they put on the domestically sold cars... Also, you have to consider that they don't want to allow or outright follow ECE rules simply because the big 3 wants the foreign automakers to go through the additional expense at developing and making DOT lighting equipment... costs which gets passed down to the consumer... to that effect the car is more "expensive" and therefore people will buy the "cheaper" american car instead (crazy)

so to sum it up? it's stupid, they're arrogant, and they don't care

can someone post a pic of the p5 with HIDs. are getting HIDs useless w/o modifying them to be projectors?

I can post tomorrow. Too tired today. It is not useless w/o the projectors. Just make sure to aim them so that you don't blind people.

The point of projectors mainly is to focus the light so that there is not much glare. I've had HIDs for a few months with no issues.

OKay, but I have silverstar's in my P5 and they light up perfectly (no cut off like i want, but very nice lightage) but when i turn my brights on it's up in the trees.

Dude, if your lights are shining in the trees they need to be aimed correctly.
